With not many canal matches on at this time of the year i decided to visit Larry Teapot on the grand union in the middle of Birmingham.

I drew peg 28 in the middle of the high wall and had 4-10-8 on squatt and chopped, not enough to frame but i had my money back by winning my 5 peg section by over a pound and half.

I had a few roach, few perch and a few small skimmers.

I had the feeling that there were a fish fish there for the first three hours but the wind was very difficult, it was bouncing off the wall opposite and blowing the float back towards me.

Nice one.
The wind was good for me today because I had tow to the right and the wind was blowing to the left. Kept my float in one place :D

My peg was 13m wide, i caught about 15 hemp fish for 2 1/2lb at 13m.

The rest were roach, perch, skimmers and gudgeon caught on squatt at 10 and 11.5m.

The lads on pegs 16,20 and 22 all caught well for the 1st hour while i really struggled, in the last 3 hrs i think all their fish had moved in front of me Image

Without divulging too much - how did the other guys either cock their pegs up or what did you do diff to 'steal' their fish Image

A pm will suffice  Image Image Image

I think on the day my approach suited the fishing more than theirs!

The lad on my right (peg20) had finished 3rd the week before with 10lb of roach and skimmers by feeding groundbait on three lines with no loosefeed, the lad on 22 fished bread which is a winning method when the fish are "grazing". I think the fish were happier feeding off bottom so once the column of particles off there GB had settled they moved on instead of following in down.

With the roach moving about a lot more this week i relied more on loosefed squatt to keep that column of feed constantly falling through the water and caught a lot of fish on the drop.

After speaking to John Fowler at the end we both had noticed that neither of us could catch by waiting with a bait suspended off bottom but could catch by constantly lifting and dropping the hookbait. I personally think this is because the roach are higher up in the water and are following it down.
