England hopeful of World Championship glory.
The 2013 World Coarse Angling Championship is due to start tomorrow, on the [ch379]era[ch324]ski Channel in Warsaw, Poland. The team, made up of Will Raison, Alan Scotthorne, Sean Ashby, Des Shipp, Steve Hemingray and Steve Gardener have been practicing at the venue for the last fortnight - and are optimistic of their chances of success.

England co manager, Mark Downes said: "I am very happy with how the final practice session has gone. The venue is getting harder and harder as intensive practice by all teams takes its toll on the fishing, and our lads have done very well to keep catching. If the team catch like they have today, then we have a great chance of picking up a medal."

Remarkably, it has been former European Champion Steve Hemingray, who is making his World Championship debut, who has been the most consistent angler - winning three out of five practice sessions, and finishing second and third in the other two.

Bloodworm fishing for roach, perch and bleak has dominated proceedings, and it is thought that winkling out a good weight of small fish will prove key to a consistent team performance. That said, sources on the bank report that heavy rain has fallen all day, and a trail of colour has started to work its way in from the top end of the match length. No fishing is now allowed until the competition starts tomorrow, so it is not known how this will effect the sport however.

With six anglers practicing, and only five anglers fishing the first day of the World Championship, it has been the squads most experienced member, Steve Gardener, who has been left out for the first day of the competition.

Lee Kerry - who has been in Poland helping the team since Monday said: "The boys have been doing well, and the last two days we have looked to be best on the bank. The tactics suit our lads style - hard bloodworm fishing for small fish. Steve Hemingray has stood out on his debut, winning three out of the five practice sessions, and coming second and third in the other two. Obviously, the draw will dictate the result, with patchy areas of fish along the match length. I'd be confident of our lads doing very well though."

Promising start for Drennan Team England.
Match Fishing's runners on the bank report a good start for Drennan Team England, who are fishing the World Championships in Warsaw, Poland.

In A section, Des Shipp is thought to be among the leaders with six small roach, and a bonus 12oz skimmer, which should give him around 550g. Despite an early bream of 2kg for the Italian angler, the Bristol ace is now clawing back the lead, and is catching fish steadily.

With no bonus fish yet recorded in B section, Steve Hemingray is thought to be doing very well, with 12 small fish also putting him up there with the sections best performers. His last two fish have been a good stamp too, so he could even be leading the section at this early stage.

Several anglers surprised the England runners in C section, by starting out for bleak and catching a run of chunky fish in quick succession. Bites have now dried up for these anglers however, and England's Will Raison has started to put a run of roach together, fishing bloodworm on the short pole. He is thought to be catching the early leaders, and is currently lying somewhere around the middle of the section.

In D section, Alan Scotthorne has taken ten roach on short pole bloodworm tactics. With a weight of around 200g, he is thought to be lying in the top half of his section.

In E section, the current World Champion, Sean Ashby is doing very well - and certainly among the top five anglers in his section. He has caught seven roach up to now, but is getting bites, and is reported to be putting in a very smooth performance.

Sean Ashby is leading Drennan Team England's charge towards victory, as the World Championship moves past the halfway stage in Warsaw, Poland.

Match Fishing's man on the bank, Matt Godfrey explained: "Sean is putting in a truly awesome display of bloodworm fishing, from one of the toughest areas of the match length. The anglers either side of him have caught just six and seven fish respectively, while Sean has well in excess of 50. He is thought to be comfortably leading his section."

Alan Scotthorne in D section is also thought to be well up in his zone, and though bites have thinned out for him, he is now catching slightly better stamp fish, up to 3oz in size, by topping up regularly with nuggets of feed.

Will Raison is still said to be leading his section, again bites have thinned out for him, but regular topping up is seeing him stay in touch with fish.

With several early skimmers in the bag, Des Shipp has now changed to catching small roach to keep him ahead of the opposition - and he is thought to be still leading his section by a comfortable margin.

The only uncertainty for England is Steve Hemingray, who is in a very tight section. With weights being as close as they are, he could be as high up as first, or as low down as eighth depending on how the fish weigh.

At the halfway stage, it is thought that England are leading the race - though France are said to be doing exceptionally too.

Possible perfect score for England.
"I wouldnt be at all surprised if England record five section wins today. Obviously, in fishing anything is possible, but as we move towards the last hour, every member of the team seems to be doing very well in their section."

These were the bold words of Match Fishing magazine's, Joe Carass, who is on the bank covering the 2013 World Championship in Poland.

"Sean Ashby is comfortably in front in his section, with Will also putting in a faultless performance and leading his section at the present time. Alan Scotthorne is certainly in the top two, and could well be winning his section.

Earlier, we were unsure how well Steve Hemingray was doing, but he has now caught up with his sections leaders on fish count, and has also had a bonus 12oz skimmer - which may well put him in the driving seat. All anglers are now catching roach on bloodworm by regularly rotating their lines."

Word from A section is that Des Shipp has well in excess of four kilos, and though there are bigger fish being caught in his section, he is well in contention of a section win.

It is also said that Wales are doing well, with at least three good section performances - so they could well be in the hunt for a top three placing.

Rush of coldwater slows World Championship sport.
As the all out approaches on day one of the World Championship, the fishing is reported to have become very tough for anglers in E section, as a rush of cold water moving through the canal has lead to the fish switching off. Although it is making the fishing difficult, it is good news for England's Sean Ashby who is comfortably leading the section.

In D section, Alan is still in control, some 20 fish ahead of the rest of the anglers in his section. Steve Hemingray is still comfortably leading his zone, after taking several more quality skimmers.

Although it is thought that Will Raison is still comfortably ahead in his section, the Spanish angler has banked a couple of big skimmers - which means he could be catching Will up.

With big fish now being caught throughout Des Shipp's section, it is not known how he will fair come the weigh in. his bank runner, Callum Dicks has said that he can't see him being any lower than fourth in section however.

All in all, it still looks like England are comfortably ahead in the team stakes, with France and Wales also fairing well.

The match is due to finish at 13:30 GMT, after which we will endeavour to get the result as quickly as possible.

Four section wins and a third for Drennan Team England.
Drennan Team England have recorded one of the most convincing results in World Championship history, taking just 7 points on the first day of this years World Championship in Poland on the [ch379]era[ch324]ski Channel in Warsaw, Poland.

Will Raison, Alan Scotthorne, Des Shipp and Steve Hemingray have all won their sections - with Des Shipp finishing in third place.

Although the final points tallies are yet to be confirmed, it is thought that this will give England a very convincing lead over their rivals.

Stand out performer at the scales for England are Steve Hemingray and Alan Scotthorne, both of whom more than doubled the second placed angler in their sections.

Pole Fishing magazine's Matt Godfrey was on the bank, and reported: "It has been an amazing match to watch, and as our unbelievable result proves, England had it dead right when it came to tactics on the day. Watching Drennan Team England in action, it is easy to see why we are regarded as being the best teams in the world. With a bit of good luck at the draw tomorrow, I can imagine we will have good cause for celebration tomorrow night."

England seven points clear of second place.
The World Championship in Poland has got off to a great start for Drennan Team England. The official result sheet shows that the team are seven points clear of second placed Poland on 14 points.

Interestingly, the recorded fish count shows England have today recorded 570 fish, their closest rival being Poland on 295.

England team member, and current World Champion, Sean Ashby said: "We can only hope that tomorrow goes as well as today. A steady team performance tomorrow should see us with a great chance of a medal - but we are all experienced enough to know just how changeable canals like this can be. If we can keep calm, and keep and open mind, we have a good chance of doing well."

England Team co manager, Mark Downes added: "I am obviously delighted with the first day result. To be honest, the venue chosen this year has made a nice change for us, as the last few years we have been fishing for species that we aren't use to catching in the UK.

This years venue has been very much like an English deep canal, and targetting roach and perch on this kind of venue is more like familiar territory for us. This has meant we have had two weeks to refine our tactics, rather than having to learn how to target species that are new to us."

The results board shows Wales are 12th with 39 points, Scotland are 20th with 52 points, Ireland 29th with 64 points and the Channel island 26th with 61 points.

No official individual ranking has been supplied yet, but with section wins for Sean Ashby, Steve Hemingray, Will Raison and Alan Scotthorne our anglers have a great chance of individual, as well as team glory.

Well done team England

Drennan Team England have won a team gold medal in the 2013 World Championship in Warsaw, Poland. After a close final day battle, the team of Alan Scotthorne, Will Raison, Sean Ashby, Des Shipp and Steve Hemingray beat second placed France by a six point margin.

The good news for England doesn't stop there - There is also an individual silver medal for Steve Hemingray, who was fishing his first World Championship with the team this year, and a bronze medal for five times former World Champion, Alan Scotthorne.

The new World Champion is Didier Delannoy of France, he caught two late bream to finish with 6kg 040g, and a perfect two point score, beating second place

England manager, Mark Downes was ecstatic with the result, and commented: " We are delighted to take team gold after a couple of difficult years on the world stage. The fishing really suited England, with roach and perch being the target. For English anglers, the best comparison I can give would be a cross between The Stainforth & Keadby Canal, and the Warwickshire Avon. Obviously, we know a lot about this kind of fishing, which helped us a lot in practice. In all, I couldn't be happier with how the team has performed, and would also like to congratulate runners up France on a great comeback."

Match Fishing's reporters in Poland have told of a good draw for Drennan Team England, as they move into the second day of the 2013 World Championship on the the [ch379]era[ch324]ski Channel in Warsaw.

The official result sheet shows that after day one, the team are seven points clear of second placed Poland on 14 points.

Last nights team meeting saw nothing changed in Drennan Team Englands squad, or indeed tactics on the bank. England Co Manager, Mark Addy explained: "It was one of the shortest meetings we have ever had, after a brief chat about tactics, the message was 'same again boys', that was the end of it."

This morning's draw has put Will Raison in A section - which produced the top weights of the match yesterday. Des Shipp is in B section and Sean Ashby is in C section, in the middle of what proved to be a consistent area yesterday. Alan Scotthorne is in D section, and World Championship newbie Steve Hemingray is in E section.

Pole Fishing magazines Matt Godfrey, who is on the bank with the team, reported: "The atmosphere couldnt be more tense here in Warsaw, and it is interesting to note just how many anglers are flocked behind each of the England Team. Although the lads are very confident of success, they all know that they could be in for a bumpier ride today. Lines which yesterday, they would have had to themselves, other teams will today be feeding, and with the venue getting harder every day, it could be a tough ride for many."
