Tucker bags up at Fish ‘O’ Mania Viaduct Fishery
Match Report
The first angler to secure their place in the Fish ‘O’ Mania grand final line up for 2012 is Stephen Tucker (Garbolino), from Yeovil. Stephen bagged carp and two tench with a weight of 103lbs 4ozs.
Stephen drew peg 125 on Campbell using both bomb and pole with his biggest fish being a 10lb carp. Stephen used 4lb main line with a size 16 911 hook to land his winning weight taken on red pellets at 6 & 8 m.
Stephen Tucker said “I have only fished three Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifiers before this one as I have usually done team fishing, but gave up team fishing last year to concentrate on bigger matches and I am delighted to win this match at my local venue”.
Very cold weather greeted the 130 competitors for the first Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier held on Saturday 14th April at Viaduct Fishery, Somerton, Somerset, which made fishing hard for the anglers taking part.
John Dewberry, MBE an Army Officer from Hampshire came in second place on Campbell peg 114 with 99lbs 14ozs made up of carp and tench taken again on both pole and bomb. Third place went to Dave Swain of Stockport pegged next to the winner on Campbell peg 124 with 91lbs 1oz of carp. In fourth place with 89lbs 15oz on Monks peg 65 at Lodge Lake was Tom Mangnall of Taunton and local star Andy Power finished in fifth place with 83lbs 5oz on Cary Lake peg 79.
The second qualifier in this series of Fish ‘O’ Mania XIX is at Gold Valley Fishery, Aldershot on Wednesday 18th April 2012 when the next finalist will be decided.

Starlets and Garbolino star Simon Fry cooks up a storm at Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier - Gold Valley
Very strong gusty winds and torrential rain made for a very unpleasant day for the 130 brave souls who faced horrendous conditions at the second Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier at Gold Valley, Aldershot on Wednesday 18th April 2012.
Someone had to compete against the torrential weather conditions and win on the day, with none other than Simon Fry as he made the best of the bad conditions and landed 9 carp up to 12lb from peg 45 on Gold Lake to secure his place in the grand final in July.
The Starlets and Garbolino backed star from Stratford-upon-Avon fished pellet with a method feeder to win with 72-14-0.
Simon Fry said “The weather on the day was horrendous with really strong rain and winds, but I drew an area where I knew it can be reasonable to fish. My plan of attack was to fish the method feeder across towards the middle of the lake just 10 yards short of the rope to go for carp. One or two people said that I was in with a chance with only an hour to go, so I thought I needed a good last hour. Unfortunately I did not have a bite for the last 40 minutes of the match, but my fish must have been a decent size to win me the match."
“I felt sorry for the angler in second place as he was so close behind me and we have all been in that position. I was familiar with the venue as having fished the UK Champs and Drennan Knock out cup, but having said that I have not fished at Gold Valley since last summer."
Not far behind Simon was local rod, Jonathon Budd from Elstead who missed out on qualification by a mere 10oz. Fishing mini boilies with a method feeder at peg 63 on Middle Lake, Jonathon caught a similar number of carp up to 12lb for 72-4-0. Fish ‘O’Mania stalwart, Steve Jackson came close yet again in third place with 68-10-0, also catching carp to 12lb on pellet and method feeder from peg 121 on Syndicate Lake.
The Angling Trust would like to thank John Raison and his team at Gold Valley Fisheries for contributing to a smooth match.

Local angler Peter Marlow wins Peatling Lakes Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier
Local angler Peter Marlow wins Peatling Lakes Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier
With the unsettled weather still affecting sport the outcome of the Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier at Peatling Lakes, Leicester on Wednesday 2nd May 2012 was always going to be uncertain. Many of the competitors fancied the larger lakes looking to catch big carp shallow, or in the margins. However, the sport was very patchy with anglers seeing fish out of reach in the centres of the lakes. In the end it was the smaller lakes which ultimately dominated proceedings.
Incredibly only 250 grams separated the top two anglers. Leicester angler, Peter Marlow who fished Peg 12 on lake C placed an excellent 43 kilos 750 grams on the scales. His catch all the more remarkable as it comprised of silver fish with chub and barbel up to 2 kilos taken mainly on a small cage feeder to the island. His main baits were casters, meat and pellets. Agonisingly second was Barry Mason from March, Cambridgeshire. Barry drew Peg 24 on Plough Pool and took carp to 4 kilos plus F1’s for a total of 43 kilos 500 grams fishing corn over pellet at 16 metres.
Third spot went to another Leicestershire angler John Hall. Fishing Peg 5 on Magna pool John caught steadily through the day to record 38 kilos and 50 grams on the method feeder. He had some proper carp with his biggest going to 6 kilos. John used pellets with meat throughout. In fourth place, and opposite John was previous Fish ‘O’ Mania Champion Marc Jones on Peg 15. Marc weighed 29 kilos 250 grams with his best fish nudging 7 kilos. He caught mainly shallow on meat. Also on Magna was Hereford angler Dave Roberts who caught 28 kilos 600 grams on the pellet waggler.
The Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier action continues on Saturday 5th May at Maver Larford Lakes, Worcestershire.

153 lbs winning haul for Chris (Hatman) Kendall at Barford Lakes Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier
Fairly mild conditions greeted the competitors for the latest Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier held on Saturday 19th May 2012 at Barford Lakes Fishery, Barford, Norwich.
Chris Kendall (Yorkshire Anglers), a Recruitment Consultant from Ilkley, West Yorkshire secured the 10th Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier place into the grand final for 2012. Chris who is better known as ‘Hatman’ to his fellow anglers drew peg 20 on Railway lake where he fished method feeder with 6 mm pellets on a hair rig to net a winning weight of 153 lbs 7 ozs.
Chris Kendall said “I have never fished at Barford before and did not have much information to go on, only that Railway lake was not considered one of the ‘big fish’ lakes at the complex, but Tommy Pickering did mention to me that he thought it could produce a winning weight. A local angler told me that peg 20 was in an unfancied bit of the lake, and that was why fewer pegs were being used in the area, so I didn’t feel very optimistic. At first I caught several small F1 carp, but the average size went up, and overall the catch was mostly F1’s and small mirror and common carp, but far more larger carp from 3lb to 8lb than I thought I’d catch. Afterwards I found out that the bigger fish sometimes show in the area, but at the start of the match I didn’t even know there were many in the lake."
“I used a method feeder with both micro pellets and groundbait on the feeder, and initially the hookbait was dead maggots, but a switch to a hair rigged pellet brought me more bites. Although, I’d set up to also fish pellet shallow and the margins I fished the method feeder for all but a few minutes. The peg was hard to fish owing to trees and brambles in the area, and casting was also difficult. I only lost a single hook length casting, but lost several method feeders when hooked fish found the submerged roots and branches. By the end of the match I was using my last suitable hook length and feeder. I think if a world class feeder angler had drawn the peg, and managed to cast to the small ‘sweet spot’ in the peg more often an even bigger weight would have been on the cards. I thought I was very lucky to qualify once into the Fish ‘O’ Mania grand final in 2011, but feel so incredibly lucky now. I was very nervous about last year’s final, but this now being my second time I’ll be a bit calmer, but only a bit."
Runner up was Suffolk angler Alan Tuck (VDE Angling Direct), a painter and decorator. Alan drew Peg 17 on the Match lake where he fished corn and pellet on the pole to net 97 lbs 7 ozs of carp the largest 9 lbs. Third place fell to Matthew Greening (Woodys Angling Centre) from Hereford on peg 13 on Top lake where he took carp to 16 lbs on pellet fished shallow on the pole for his 95 lb weight. In fourth place local angler Lee Carver (VA Plastics) weighed in 92 lbs of carp from peg 16 on Pleasure lake. Fifth place went to Andy May with 89 lbs 4 ozs from peg 2 on Match lake.
On Saturday 26th May 2012 the Fish ‘O’ Mania action continues at Tunnel Barn Farm Fishery in Shrewley, in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside.

Fish 'O' Mania lucky for Ben Emery
Thirteenth Fish 'O' Mania qualifier proves to be lucky for top rod Ben Emery
After a promising forecast for the 13th Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier on Saturday 2nd June 2012, the weather took a turn for the worse as the draw took place leaving the anglers to face a cold, drizzly day, and this almost certainly affected the sport. That said this beautifully kept fishery - Partridge Lakes, near Warrington produced a cracking match.
Eleven of the thirteen sections were won with over 60 lbs and a quick calculation showed that the average weight per angler was over 26 lbs, even including 46 anglers who did not bother to weigh.
Top rod was Surrey angler, Ben Emery (Marukyu/Garbolino), a previous Fish ‘O’ Mania grand finalist in 2010. The 31 year old cabinet maker drew Peg 16 on the Holbar 2 pool and caught carp to 12 lbs to put 123 lbs 5 ozs on the scales. Early on he caught fishing shallow with 6 mm pellet, but as the day went on he switched to his left hand margin to take some real “lumps”. Ben’s wife sat behind keeping score and at the weigh in she was less than 10 lbs adrift.
Runner up on Holbar 1 pool peg 9 was accountant, Peter Plant, from Stone in Staffordshire. Peter fished caster shallow all day to take 81 lbs 11 ozs of carp to 8 lbs to the scales. Third spot went to Grant Albutt fishing Covey 48. Grant weighed 78 lbs 10 ozs of F1’s and mirrors to 5 lbs taken shallow on caster and also on a short meat line. Simon Skelton took fourth place with 78 lbs 3 ozs. He was three pegs away from Grant on Covey 51 and caught a mixture of ide, F1’s and carp to 5 lbs on pellet. In fifth place was Rob Pelling on Willow 19. Rob caught carp, ide and roach for a total of 76 lbs 6 ozs on soft hook pellet.
The 14th Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier action moves to Preston Innovations Boldings Fishery, Bridgnorth, Shropshire on Saturday 9th June 2012. With only three more qualifiers to go for this year it will be interesting to see who joins the grand final line up for one of the most prestigious matches in angling for a chance to win the coveted title of Fish ‘O’ Mania Champion 2012, and the major prize pot of £30,000 on Saturday 14th July.

The only bumper 300-peg qualifier out of the 16 (the others are all 130 pegs) is normally a lower-weight affair so no one expected Adam, a previous qualifier, to have such a massive weight at Garbolino Lindholme Lakes.
The Browning-backed star from Billingham fancied his chances when he pulled out in-form Peg 73 on Bonsai. Fishing chopped worm and caster on the pole across to the island he started in 2ft of water before catching in just 10 inches by the end of the match.
Forty F1s to 2lb in the first hour was an unbelievable start but he then suffered a slow three hours, nicking just 15 fish before a last-hour burst added 20 more.
Second place was the ever-consistent Darren Cox (Garbolino) who fished for silvers and F1s shallow with worm and caster all day on Strip Pond. His 46.6kg effort was the early leader and would normally have comfortably won this event but he had to endure an agonising wait as Adam was one of the very last anglers to weigh in!
Adam is sure to be one of the favourites in the Final after impressing the crowd the last time he was there. With top anglers like Jamie Hughes, Steve Cooke, Stu Ballard and Simon Fry in the race it could be a cracker!
