Also interesting that the first couple of matches were weighed in imperial, followed by a switch to metric - that'll have a few 'youngsters' scratching their heads 'what's 320 grammes equal?'
Good to see Rolly (RIP) get a mention or two

It was a shame that the next time me and Dave saw this guy was at the good mans (JR's) funeral.'

MGB tells us The Presentation nights and trophy winning seemed to have a greater significance in those days and the trophies were highly prized.
Although Bill Upton won the Booby prize in 1983, I feel that these pics were taken from an earlier era. I think the pics depict the season before Dave and I joined Cashmores and was one of the first times we had gone to one of the Presentation Nights at the Gala Suite, West Bromwich. I maybe completely wrong about that as my memory is very sketchy going back that far! As you can see he won a cane, bit of string and a real live goldfish in a jar!
Bill was one of the mainstays of the club in those days, together with Vic Priest and I remember how sad we felt when he announced his retirement.

A name that features here and there in these results is Vic Priest
In the past, Heinzer has spoken to me of him with much admiration and respect for what he did for the Cashmores club
Well recorded for posperity, here's Vic
MGB, who provided this photo adds
'Vic Priest was the one man band who was running Cashmores at the time me and Heinzer joined [Early 70's.] He did absolutely everything with hardly any help from other members. When he resigned the club suddenly realised what a stalwart he was and no one wanted to pick up the mantle. It was suddenly obvious that the only way the club could go forward is if the various jobs were picked up by others to spread the load, and as you know we still try to stick to that principle today'
Hat's off to Vic

Just going back a bit to 1977 again and these results........
Well here's the proof of the pudding - curtesy of MGB who's dug these few photo's out of the late George Hubball (RIP) from that match at Court Farm
MGB adds 'The year is 1977, the late great George Hubball with his R. Avon [Court Farm] "Fur And Feather" catch. One of those bream moved the scales round to 3lb 12ozs and won him the heaviest fish trophy for that year and was part of the " Heaviest Match Weight" [9lb 14 ozs]
I remember me and Dave going to his house on occasions and marvelling at his bench set up. On a big board he had set up all kinds of devices and rigs for tying hooks, whipping rings, loading spools etc. I learnt a lot from that man.
And another photo of George - venue unknown

WINNING TEAM - John Rowland, Mick Kenn, G Brookes & D Perry
All our yesterdays - club results 1974 - 92
Another picture thanks to MGB, but date unknown
MGB tells us 'The guy with the big barbel was John Cashmore, as with Geoff and Richard, the name was a coincidence. If I remember correctly he was at one stage our Match booking secretary. I think venue was Ripple or Uckinghall? [BAA Water] and the fish was caught 1st cast and was his only bite of the day! The head growing out of his shoulder belonged to Pete Turner who also was the Secretary for a time. You will of course recognise the late, great John Rowland [I wonder if he ever had any hair?]
The guy with the pipe was, I think, Gordon Norris, who tragically died an all too early death. Dave's nose can also be seen in the picture [far right.]'

When you see those weights, they are roughly equivalent to what might be caught at club level on the rivers today, maybe a bit less.
Looks like things haven't changed that much.

Too true MarkV - unless it was the 'right' angler on a 'cock peg' on the right day, those 30lb chub or 50lb barbel weights rarely materialised on club matches - usually weights like those only occured on just the odd pleasure session off noted pegs

One heck of a coincidence , somewhere along the line they must have been drawn to the name and joined, at least subconciously I would think !
Is John related to Geoff and Richard ?

I thought i'd posted on this thread lunchtime, but it seems to have evaporated, unless I put it somewhere else on the forum by mistake...
Wanted to say, how good it is that these things have been recorded and hope there is more to come.

Dunno Mark - a decade or more before my association with the club - perhaps MGB will advise when he catches up with this topic
