Shakespeare Superteam ace Tony Bench got the new season off to a great starting the first Shakespeare Qualifier of the new season on the Warwickshire Avon, bagging a 21-8-0 net of chub to beat a 74 strong field on a day when good weights were hard to come by.
Drawn on peg 35, the famous confluence with the River Isbourne, Tony fished waggler half way across the river and caught chub to 3lb.
Bronze maggots were Tony’s hook bait of choice, and by regularly loose-feeding a combination of maggots and casters he was able to keep fish coming all day.
Over 15lb behind Tony was second placed Mark Brush of Daiwa Gordon League, who again caught chub on the waggler. In joint third place were Ed Warren, who topped up a net of small chublets with a 1lb+ eel and perch on the flat float, and Paul Bradbury with another waggler caught net of chublets.
However, it was pretty grim elsewhere with only five and a half pounds needed for third place. Mark Brush, Tony Bench and Dean Cherrington all qualified for the Shakespeare final.

Two of the River Avon’s famous Evesham barbel formed the bulk of the top two weights, with one of the fish being the very same specimen that helped Steve Ashmore bag top prize in last years final! Distinguishable by its slightly damaged tail, the 12lb monster fell to Kevin Millards bomb and pellet approach on peg 31.
It wasn’t quite heavy enough to beat Richie Tomala’s 14-00 weight from the next peg however, which also included a double figure barbel along with a few waggler caught chublets. Richie again tempted his barbel on bomb and pellet thrown a third of the way across the river.
In third place was ever consistent Tony Bench on peg six, whose net of waggler and stick float caught chublets went 9-6-0. Fourth placed Ian Didcote caught small fish on the waggler backed up with several eels taken on the flat float from end peg 80. In fifth place was Tom Scholey with a 6-11-0 net of waggler caught perch from peg 35.
Encouragingly, there were several section winning nets of small fish caught along the length, and most anglers enjoyed a good days fishing with no shortage of bites.

Sunday July 3rd

With bright, still conditions and a low clear river, the fishing was tougher than usual on the second qualifying match of the weekend. Fortunately, plenty of small fish were feeding which kept the anglers entertained even though the framing weights were lower than normal. Daiwa Gordon League’s Mark Brush finished ahead of the chasing pack with a 5-9-0 weight made up of quality roach on hemp seed topped off with a bonus eel. Drawn on peg 15, Mark fished chopped worms and casters at 14.5 metres, and fed his hemp swim down his peg at 11 metres.
Second placed Tim Kaye discounted big fish from his match plan, and targeted gudgeon on the short pole with groundbait and pinkies. After catching around 100 fish here, he went long to find several slightly larger roach on hemp to make up his 5-4-0 bag.
Four flat float caught eels made up Matt Godfrey’s third placed weight. Matt fished 17.5 metres with chopped worms and casters to tempt fish to 2lb from unfancied peg 48.
Alan Stephens finished fourth with a 4-12-0 net of waggler caught chublets, which left Tony Marshall to back up his previous days victory with yet another frame place. Tony caught 4-8-0 of roach on the long pole with hemp.

Tony Marshall Wins At Evesham

Shakespeare Qualifier
Saturday 2nd July

Drawn on unfancied peg 52, Tony Marshall put up what many anglers described as the best performance of the season so far to win with a 13-10-0 net of small fish. Tony started by fishing maggots at 16 metres, where he found plenty of small perch and chub before switching to a hemp line that he fed two metres shorter and catching quality roach which made up the bulk of his winning net.
Brian Pollard added to a double figure barbel with a couple of pole caught eels and perch to finish second with a 12-1-0 net from peg 11. In third place was river legend Wayne Swinscoe on peg 6, who fished waggler and maggots three quarters of the way across the river for a 7-7-0 bag of perch and small chub.
Elsewhere on the river, several of Evesham’s resident tench made an appearance, and played a big part in section winning nets. Word on the bank was very positive, with many anglers noting that more and more fish seem to be showing week on week as the season progresses.

With fishing times being pushed back to accommodate the Evesham River Festival, anglers were optimistic that the later finish would lead to increased catches.
Alcester rod George Avery took top spot with a 7-8-0 net of perch and roach from peg seven. George started by fishing maggots on the long pole at 13 metres, where he took perch, roach and dace on a running through rig. When bites dried up, he switched to a waggler fished with maggots which kept bites coming for the duration of the match.
In second place was Middlesex based Darren Davies. Darren started his match on a flat float fished with chopped worm, where he found a couple of early eels. When bites stopped, he alternated between two maggot lines to keep small fish coming for a 6-5-8 total.
On his first visit to the river this season, Sensas backed Paul Downes took third spot with 6-5-0 from peg one. The Birmingham backed rod found several perch and a bonus eel on waggler and maggots.

With a little rainwater putting a tinge of colour in the water, this proved to be the best qualifier of the season so far, with a whopping 8-13-8 needed to make the frame!
Coming out on top with a weight of 13-0-0 was Oxford rod Robin Cave, who plundered the rivers roach population from unfancied peg 49. Robin fished hemp and tares on the pole at just eight metres, for a net consisting almost entirely of roach, the biggest of which weighed in excess of 1lb!
In second place was London Based Tim Kaye, who drew peg six on the Town length. After starting the match by catching small fish on groundbait and pinkie, Tim caught a 3lb tench down the edge on a pole line fed with chopped worms and casters. He went on to catch some quality roach on hempseed late on in the match to give him a 9-7-0 total.
In third place was Drennan Oxford’s Steve Townsend, who again took advantage of the rivers feeding roach population to help him grab a place on the podium. Steve fished the long pole and caught quality fish on hempseed, ending with a 9-3-8 net.
With more and more roach seeming to be moving in to the town as the season develops, expectations are running high for a very eventful final weekend come the August bank holiday.

A blustery wind, coupled with a clear river running quite hard after the previous days torrential rain, meant that conditions were far from ideal for the anglers battling it out in this Sundays qualifier.

Clary Partridge from Pershore drew peg 13, and relied upon stick float and maggot feeder tactics to exploit his peg.
Clary’s match started well with a run of small fish on the stick float, and when things quietened off mid match, he made a very productive decision to pick up his maggot feeder rod. He took a large eel, followed by a 3lb barbel to take victory with a total weight of 6-12-8.
At the other end of the match length on peg 80, Bristol’s Chris Derrick started his match on a five metre whip, taking a couple of pounds of fish in the first two hours of the match. When this line slowed up, he went on a 13 metre pole line that he had fed with groundbait and pinkies, where he caught perch to 10 oz and small roach until the end of the match. At the whistle Chris was an agonizing 1 oz short weighing in with 6-11-8.
In third place was Pershore rod Dean Cosnett whose weight of 5-11-8 drams included a 4lb tench and 10 hemp caught roach.

fished evesham yesterday i didn't put 20 babies heads in either ::) ::)67 fished and for saying its not fishing what a turnout .to be fare i'm never really bothered with evesham, but since last year i've began to get into the place .the matches are well run again you always see some old faces [i didn't see diddy ] the cafe looks brilliant and the foods great i can see why choppy and tony travel there most weeks
i spoke to choppy on saturday and his info was priceless  nothing held back top class
5 of us went down along with mark one lads as neither of us could be tickets for the B/J matches [that bit needs sorting for next year]so we needed to take a look i think the roach might of been preoccupied with what was left from the previous weekends bombardment as few and far between were caught
i drew peg 50 its always been on my wish list and choppies and everyone else's  it looks the part and i only hope lighting strikes twice as i'd love another crack at it .conditions were far from idea with bright sunshine and gin well crystal clear water  and of course hundreds of walkers .mind you at least i was under some tree's so i was comfortable and not like some of the others in the open
i spoke to choppy who took the time from his fishing to tell him where i had drawn  straight a way he said you have a chance of winning the match  its me your talking to i replied  :-/his info again was spot on and tweaked my tackle
i decided to fish the waggler at the start but not before having a go for the gobies as they have showed up in numbers recently  first 20mins not a bit only minnows  i'd feed the waggle and i was soon into very small roach dace chub but all too small to put a weight together  I'd primed my hemp line for about a hour and a half before trying it  after what seamed age's the float went under and a nice roach was in the net couldn't buy another bite i tried several other rigs before another roach was netted .frustrated was not the word i'd of used as i knew that the roach were there i'm sure as soon as i'd hooked one the rest would back off  i think choppy's match had finished when he phoned me  more frustrated then anything else as it was a good peg but just couldn't piece anything together
now the only thing that changed after that phone call was the cloud had thickened up and i had feed a little heavier. and with 40minutes to go i started to get signs and odd small roach it looked as though they had started to feed and with 20mniutes left i'd netted two pretty good roach and lost one trying to hurry  i was getting a bite every run down when suddenly i was playing another big roach a pike grab it lucky for me it was only the hook length next run down the and the same thing happened i hooked and lost one more before landing one on the whistle  i was boll#cked and just sat there thinking what could of been  it was who's who in my section so i dragged myself up the bank to see what they had caught the Shakespeare lad had drawn 49 he said he couldn't buy a bite off anything [i thought I've heard that one before ] and to my surprise he weighted 1lb 3oz to my right a tipton lad now i had heard he'd landed a big fish which turned out to be a pound perch with nothing else 1lb 2oz i didn't see the next guy but he only had a pound and the it was rob hewison knowing rob he'd of caught a bonus fish .but now he'd just over the pound so making my 3lb look ok on what must of been a real off day one or two eels came out which surprised everyone the winners had bonus fish one had a tench off 8 and one had a barbel off 17 for 6lb something
we did have 4 section winners out of five so we had a drink or two outside the cafe almost until the sun had set a really enjoyable day yet again

It's great to get down there. If i'd been able to fish weekends i'd have fished a couple this summer.

I'm way out of my depth but with the weights fairly low, there's always a chance  ( we can dream lol ).

A very interesting stretch of water.

Not knowing the pegs well either, I can always talk myself into being positive easily, wherever I draw ! 

Hoping to get down this bank holiday weekend. It's the place to be.
