this weekend i was back at packington great fishery and most matches are attended by 40 to 50 anglers .i find packington not like most commercials plenty to go at yet the winning weights are not normally massive [they can be from time to time not so much at this time of year]the match was on big geareys 32 or 35 fished
some good commercial anglers competing as well, after last week on mollands no one could say what you would need to win .i'd done a bit of homework and a few phone calls and past the info on to the lads as 4 of us fished this week.
at the draw john announces the bonus pegs i think its three at the moment with three different amounts on each peg i didn't draw on this week but i did draw a good area peg 19 at this point everyone clams up and its everyone for themselves
lovely looking lake and i had a good clear cast [good job i took a bucket of G/B and a method rod on Saturday afternoon to have a bit of practice ] last week pinging pellets had won the match although it was a low weight to win the match it was always in the back of my mind.i set up one method ,one straight lead and a margin rig for the pole that was it ,not a lot for me so with the extra time i had i put up a pellet waggler
i started just pinging pellets as far as i could straight out in front so i could feed my margin with ease a very simple day well that's what i thought
the breeze was slight and made spotting the fish easy but they really didn't want to feed just cruising around for long periods of time
i'd get liner after liner yet nothing really to shout about for the first hour
thinking all the time what would make them have a go i just kept pinging pellets until i thought I'd have a go on the pellet waggler, its only 2 maybe 3ft deep all over the lake so i started shallow and got to about 15in when i start to get indications i quick couple of carp came to the net and one small fouled hooked carp then it went dead for what seamed a hour or more i tried everything with the waggler so i gave the lead a go while i could still feed easily and make a few calls and most said it was fishing rubbish so i thought i might have a chance if i could keep bites coming .i find this sort of fishing very frustrating and know there is more than meats the eye too it
i changed hook baits for pellets to corn to maggots to worms to boilies and still the tip and the waggler wouldn't go under going into the last hour i tried a red boillie suddenly the tip started to go around and a few carp ended up in the net
NOW this where my problems started as i started foul hooking quite a few on the bomb and also on the waggler .to me and the bloke standing behind me you'd of said they were proper bites yet i'd play them only to be done as i lifted the rod
anyway i ended up with 32lb 14oz i think
64lb first 2nd was 36lb 3rd 33lb 14oz 4th 33lb 9oz 5th 33lb 7oz then me so closes yet so far away
still never mind one of the lads was third so I'm hoping we are making in roads on the venue ,i also learnt loads about the fishing i don't expect take the place apart but I'm enjoying my fishing and that's what counts
