The first 'pole floats' in the UK and Europe would undoubtedly have been quills. They would have been used on Sowerbutts cane poles and of course the original fishing tackle would not have incorporated a reel

I just stumbled on this thread and realised I had something similar looking in my shed. I presumed that these two floats were home made, but it looks like the black one at least was the real deal back in the olden days! :D

Incidentally I've caught on both. I think I was given them when I was about 10 and they would have been 20 odd years old then.
