Cashmores Match 10 2010 - River Avon Evesham
Nothing to tell really, just a bit of old fashioned "water
craft" which is why it was so refreshing and enjoyable to fish the Avon again. In the early days of CAC a few million years ago, we only had 8 matches a year and most were on the rivers with the odd pool and canal thrown in for good measure. one of our most popular venues in those days was Court Farm, further upstream and on the opposite bank from Saturdays venue. In those days anyone catching double figures was a hero but we all went away happy with almost no gripes about anything.
Anyway, I got to my peg and decided to go back to basics and I set up one waggler rod, one feeder rod and on plumbing the depth realised I had about 15/16 feet depth at about 4 rod lengths out. This set me thinking. I much prefer stick float close in but realised the depth would make it difficult, then I had a brainwave! [it still hurts]
Many years ago a float system came on the market called The Newark Needle Float, which was a revolutionary concept at the time and involved fitting a needle to the line instead of shot. Any one under the age of 40 won't know what the hell I am talking about!
I have used them on many occasions and had some great bags of fish on them although they didn't catch on with the rest of the fishing fraternity.
One day, many moons ago, I was fishing on the Avon with a very deep hole in front of me. My attempts to fish a "slider" was not very succesful and when I got home I modified a NNF into a slider and Saturday was the first time in about 30 years I've drawn a peg suitable enough to try it.
It worked a treat athough when the wind and waves got up it was a bit hard to see the tip.
First few fish were small chub then with the hemp and casters going in, the perch started to show.
End result, 5lb 6ozs 2 drams, not a massive weight but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

Spot on MGB, well done mate.
I'd heard of those floats and thought them a gimmick. Didnt actually know what they were.
Not sure I was doing much or even any fishing at the time though.
Saw the top half dozen or so pegs weigh in on the open at Crown Meadow today and your weight topped them all (apart from a 10lb Barbel). It would have been a respectable weight along the whole length I 'd think.

Nice one MGB
Even nicer hearing that you fished the 'slider' - a method I dare say would confound many today thats if they've even heard of it.
i remember those needles doing the bizz for you on The Trent at Wolsey Bridge a few years back
MarkV - sounds like the river seems to have switched off after it had been fishing well over the last few weeks.....................just shows the power and impact of the once we 'are in the area'

Well done MGB,I had forgotten all about the NNF sets you and I used all them years ago. I still have a couple of sets in my old tackle box in the garage, also do you remember they brought out a set of ledger pins they never took off, might have to reintroduce them on the trent at swarkstone

Simon, I've just spent three hours tryin to get online. I've got wires round me neck. Three puters in bits cobbled together. Telephones unplugged and i've strewn everything across the landing.
All Vodaphone networks are down. Cant get the Samaritans or even send a message.
The keyboards on me lap. The mouse is balanced on a tower of books, topped by Jamies Olivers cook everything. Monitor on a chair and i've commandeered me sons bedroom as its the only computer I can get to work.
Cats strangled itself in the wires.
The wifes gonna kill me in the morning when she sees the mess.
Finally get online ... and ...nuttin

I think the venue was good and I'd love another crack at it next year!
I completely messed it up as I wasn't prepared. Catalogue of errors....
1. Didn't bring a feeder arm so I missed all of the bites I could see from holding the rod
2. Only set up one pole rig which I smashed up 2nd put in
3. Forgot my 2nd reel so I had to keep switching the reel between my feeder and slider set up
4. Left my maggots at home!
It was like an episode of Mr.Bean for me. Can't wait for the next river match to lay the ghost to rest hopefully!
TK, told you I was cack on the rivers!!! And to add insult to injury, I got done by 2 drams

Can't fish Saturdays, or i'd still be with Cashmores.
Had a look at the stretch the other day though.
