I fished a match on the Erewash canal once & on the bit i fished,if you'de have gone in with breadpunch,it would
have gone in white & come out purple!
God knows where i was,but its 20 yrs ago & the water
had some dye in it from a local industry
I'de agree.....a purple sh!tole
Those days have long gone, I well remember them.
Erewash Cut really is a top punch water nowadays, especially in the summer

I think it was Long Eaton bill,it was very narrow above a lock,
with no cover & a purple stain through the water,i was within spitting distance of the pub used for the draw, cant
remember the name of it,below the lock was some boat or tree, that was "chub city",not normally peged, but it was that day & it won & 2nd & 3rd came next to it.Above the lock was crap ,every one crappity smack off half way through,if
i remember they said the purple was too purple

Confidence.
Punch fishing is oh so different than it was. The days of one hour of bites and that's your lot have long gone.
Fred will still be sitting there waiting for his first bite long after many have crappity smack off in a hard match. That last hour is now the crucial one, - not the first.

Certainly a good point there Bill - can relate to that this winter on our gruellers
Cotti who won one of our matches on the punch actually pointed out the same to me when he told me 'You wouldn't have caught those fish..........'

I was tempted to say 'muck knows!'
I think, in this area anyway, there are that many more roach in the canals nowadays they are the prime target. We noticed this change some four or five years back.
Sometimes you will catch roach straight off on the punch but sometimes you have wait for whatever sparks them off. We have just got used to 'sitting' on the bread now, sometimes they tend to come very late especialy in the cold spell we have just had.
Hope some of that makes sense.
crappity smack knows why they suddenly kick in but sometimes, with continual feeding, the peg goes from completely barren to a situation that you can not get in fast enough.
Hope it's like it on Saturday
