Best bread punch angler
The best bread punch angler i ever saw was a strange old bloke
who lived local to me,where i grew up as a kid & fished the leeds liverpool canal.i used to watch him regular & he said very little,i asked loads of questions & he only answered yes or no,so it was difficult!,he wouldnt fish matches because they
happened on sundays & he was very religous,he wouldnt use
anything other than bread,as killing maggots & worms was wrong.Boy could this guy fish bread!.As feed he used home made slop & fed it by wiping his fingernail through the slop & flicking it at his float with super accuracy upto 6-8m,but more usually 5m
I often wonder what he's doing now, everytime i pass the
graveyard .
seriously brilliant roach angler,he worked at Rolls Royce & made his own punches & his floats were homemade tiny
things.,he used the same 8m composte pole as the match lads at the time, but he'd made at work tiny proper pure ptfe
bushes & fitted his pole with no2 zim.very ahead of his time,
but not match orientated ,if he was he'd have cleaned up,he regularlly had 10lb,when practicing matchmen had 2lb all around him.
So who was your best bread head of all time?

That is no contest if we are talking canals.
Fred Cheetham without any hesitation.
He is that far ahead it is almost untrue. Anyone who thinks he isn't obviously hasn't drawn next to him when there are a few fish about.
Any more takers?......... It's all opinion.

Fred really admired John Haynes and gleaned all sorts of info off him. Add that to his own knowledge you have the finished product.

Fred the bread it is then What does
he do that puts him head & shoulders above his peers?
The fella i'm on about would have made a name for himself, had he been competitive, certainlly at bread fishing
anyway,cos thats all he did
He was an odd-ball though!,he was a heavy chap & wore trousers that came up to his chest supported by these
really strong braces, they were so strong and the trouser
material so thin, that the upward force "parted" his meat
and 2 veg .He also had so much byrlcream on his hair
that he could achieve a kind of origarmi comb-over that
resembled a some sort of hair sammosa
good on the punch though

Right that it!
Its a loaf of warburtons from now on
How did he catch em Bill,on the feeder or something
like a crowquill avon & long rod?
Im not too suprised tbh as for all the fancy bream groundbaits that have been tried over the years,
good quality brown crumb is probably still the best feed

Fred the bread for me
Johnny Haynes was pretty special though chucking that bread right on top of his waggler, you new he was beat when he got the pole out.

TMR,
I think Fred caught his bream on straight leger. He don't use 'owt that wriggles, mainly fishes bread and hemp.
He has had some right big catches of bream in Ireland many years ago, on bread; he don't go now.
I'm going over on May 15 for a week.

Fair play to him
With the river clear & the fish more fussy i bet
using a topper float & punch crumb/gravel with
flake or big punch would catch well
Maybe not at spawning time, with all the migratory
fish, but it might be suprising the rest of the time.

He don't know what a crappity smack squatt is.
The last time he used them, as far as I can remember, was a few years back on the Erewash Canal in Div One, he codged them off me
