which barbel rod?

Hi i use a Mal storey trent feeder i ve had it 15 years never let me down twin tips had barbel over 10 up at shardlow think he does the pellet feeder now but same blank give him a call

Here we go  Plumb It.

Any river rods with a bit of grunt in middle to butt will do, plus suitable for use wi 4lb to  6lb line......in conjunction wi backwinding when necessary

Personally I'd opt for Preston Carbon Active  13'8" - 100gm  Dutch Master Rod (£190ish.)
This Rod is well suited to chuckin 3oz feeders 70/80 yards........coupled wi a Preston Competition PRC 6000 reel is deffo the top side of the job

Cheers pedro i'll have a gander at that lot is that reel a bait runner? Seen a few using them lately not used one myself normally slacken my clutch off, any thoughts on the use of bait runners for barbel?

SHIMANO STRADIC 4000 wi rear fighting drag slackend off is second to none 

PCRs reels front drag ....theres no need for runners when your sat over rod.....slackening off drags fine 

Personally I only use bait runners when  knockin up a brew ( or goin fo a squirt).....alternatively in conjunction wi bite alarms.....once the suns gone darn n nocturnal creatures come art to play

Suppose it depends on which part of the trent.

I personally use a shimano 12-14ft antares bx heavy, absolute brilliant rod though I dont think they make them any more. At 14ft its brilliant on the tidal and 12 ft for the normal river when its up or a peg thats tanking through. Might be worth thinking about a 12-14ft rod if you fish both.

On slower parts or when its low and clear i.e. Newark dyke I use a Daiwa connoisseur G power 12ft feeder.

As for Reel, Shimano dl4000fa ever time (though I use old 5000se for Tidal). In fact all my feeder reels are these....why?? they have a baitrunner, not too big, not too expensive. Just the option of the bait runner does it for me, if your struggling and need one bite to win it can be long wait for a bite, sods law it goes round when your not expecting it, just very useful to have.

One thing to confuse the situation, if you fish a slower part of the trent, don't buy the stiffest rod you can buy (like the shimano antares bx heavy) The stiffer the rod, the stronger the line and the heavier feeder you will need. Slightly softer rods will allow you to fish a bit lighter and protect you from getting snapped off from the barbel lunges.

In a nutshell its personal preference, these are just mine.

Cheers for the replys. been offered a tricast legend 5000 for £80 someone selling it from tackle shop, there is one on the bay at moment too. Ive got the 3500 legend and like it, anyone know if the 5000 would be suitable for trent?
