Stainforth & Keadby Canal to host exciting new contest.
A new teams of three winter league is set to run on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal at Thorne.

The venue – which has a reputation as being one of the most prolific winter fisheries in the country has been famous for hosting the sell out individual and pairs league in years gone by. In recent years, numbers have began to dwindle though – and when the previous organiser announced that he wasn’t interested in running the leagues any more, Lee Kerry and Tom Scholey stepped up to the mark.

Lee explained: “The Stainforth and Keadby canal is one of the finest winter roach venues in the country, and Tom and I are really excited about organising what we hope will be a great Winter League.

We have decided on a teams of three format over eight matches – with three falling before Christmas and five after.  The league will be decided on weight – but we will have an individual ranking too,  which will be decided on points.

We are both of the opinion that the money should be spread out, so the winner of each five peg section will receive £50, and we will pay the top three overall on each match. With 60 anglers fishing, the winning team will receive £1,500 – and we will pay the top four teams.

We are open to offers regarding sponsorship – so the payout could be set to rise even further.”

Dont mind teaching you thr basics Damo

Mostly revolves around what snd how much you initially feed ....then when to topup.

Theres some top notch SMF anglers who will be fishing it....that I'm sure will take you under their wing.
Would suggest you should caddy for them/walk bank etc.....

Loads to go at - however rigs etc....are a personal choice, but should give you an idea

Shes wider and deeper than what you are probably used too...... generally a top three will cover most areas

I would probably use a drennan roach as a float as that they favourite canal rig for squats and stuff, it has a carbon stem plastic bristle.

damo like predro said its wider and a little deeper the wind often catches the venue
my choice of floats would be the sensas JEAN FRANCOIS they take a little getting used to and are hard to shot up hopefully the new ones will have a better tip they are wire stems very good for this canal
its not just about B/J though caster can play a big part in the winter

What size float wise u looking at i have up to a gram, i do want to purchase some wire stems ones

yep when you on the fish no need to pussy around damo you are fishing against anglers like lee kerry who is a machine up there hook size can be anywhere from 20s to 16s the laggie is the most important part damo because you are on a quiet high bank and although top 3s cover most of the canal you really want to be landing fish on top4s
there are areas where you might need small hooks smaller floats but thats down to getting to know those areas but you certainly need positive rigs

3 years ago they was using 3gram pencil floats on close shelf and catching 300 fish for 20lb. Been bit more tricky last 2 winters, still plenty of fish but seem to be smaller average size roach, needing to fish both shelves - 6m and 13m for a rough guide. Caster caught a few, chopped worm had its days also. Hemp didn't work well last year but year before it was worth double figures on a long pole. Lastly, if you do enter make sure you take some bread, works on every section and can sometimes sort you a few stamp fish when B/J is only catching blades or bumble bees

It will be interesting seeing how the teams of 3 work out this year, especially on weight, could be a good scrap all the way through as different baits work each week and teams go from way out of it to right up there with a few chop worm bream or caster / hemp dog roach, while ever its on weight you have options
