Fished on the Birmingham Mainline canal from Coseley tunnel to Wolverhampton.
104 fished.

With a hard overnight frost, a bright sunny day and a clear canal conditions could not have been worse.

Drennan North West superstar Ian Moulton forgot to read the script and ran away with an easy win from peg 282 at the back of the Delta.

Fishing joker inside he was into roach from the off at 5 metres, however it was when the fish moved onto his 10m line half way through that he did most damage netting skimmers around the 10oz mark and roach to 1lb to finish with 20lb 5oz.

1st Ian Moulton 20-5-0
2nd Dave Lloyd 12-2-0
3rd Mick Hatchard 9-1-0
4th Jason Cunningham 8-10-0
5th Rob Quinn 8-9-0
6th Darren Frost 8-8-4

Fozzie also led his threesome, Neil Martin and Andy Billington, to a team win on the day with 10pts

Teams on day

1st Drennan NW Gold 10pts
2nd Fox VDE Tipton 11
3rd Brosettes 12
4th Maver Midlands 13
5th Shakespeare Superteam 14

Where did you lot all draw and what did you catch?

I had 91 roach for 4-8-14 and 3rd in section from peg 148. I estimated I had 5lb+ even when i tipped them in the basket. Doh! :-X
I thought all my fish were really chunky 1ozers but they were obviously 3/4ozers instead.

The fish were definitely in pockets as Ian Crossman only had 7oz next peg!  :o There was a lot of poor weights in my section. You could tell there was a lot of roach about but it was just too calm and sunny for them to open their mouths. I'd really fancy a match there with a bit more colour in the canal...

Its not a big bay, Its a stretch that goes gradually from 12m at peg 279 to 17m at peg 284 back to 12m at peg 287.

Note frame.......another drawbags convention.....

I was 140 pegs away......... nothing changes :'( :'(

I had a mare....all my own doing, crappity smack up in the first 5 minutes by feeding too much...me rigs were wrong...sun in my eyes.....total crappity smack disaster...first time ive fished the venue so my 1.3.12 of skerrits (62 roach & 2 perch) put me 8th in the 19 peg section, another 4 drams would of put me 5th in section coz 3 tied on 1.4.0 :(

I had no hair left come the end of the match, drew 139 (bridgehole) and got too the peg really fancying it, plumbed up and had lovely depth, made sure everything was spot on with duplicate rigs set up............ but i didnt plan on it taking 4 hours too get my first bite! :'(

Halfway through the match i thought i might have overfed but after talking too fellow anglers in my section we had all fed roughly the same but they were into fish from the off. Even if I'd have fed too scratch for perch i would have still ended up way down in the section as they all caught roach. Speaking too Rob Quinn at the end he reckoned that all that happend was the roach were down at 122 and gradually throughout the day worked there way down the section, which meant i wouldnt see any fish right till the end, which proved the too be the case...............Very Frustrating >:(

Alex Powell caught too my left but me and the angler the other side were left biteless for nearley all the match, could only put it down too the fish must have been sitting on the peg........or maybe i simply F$%^&quot :D IT UP!

Theres no B/joker canal circuit up here in the north west anymore ropa, for one reason or another no one will compete against Drennan, Saints or us anymore.........the bridgy is a superb venue, wide and deep 5-6ft down the track and 3ft across on most pegs, not seen any b/joker for 18 months and its only ten minutes down the road for me.Its a bit dodgy if you go on yer own, but me baseball bat is going in my holdall tonight ::)

Sorry Ad got caught wiv something else mate....... I was on 144(were you on 139 on my left?) the roach were in small pockets Ad.....the bright sunshine and frost are THE worst conditions mate.......if it was overcast and a bit windy think everyone would of caught.....

Aswell as the sh!t going on in front of 145-143 you cant ship back behind you either.........145 looks a good peg on a more favourable day    ;)

evening all,
i really f%£&*d my peg up(122)a end peg, first time id seen it looked a bit narrower than most in the length.
so decided to take a gamble and lob my breaker in  Imagebig mistake
only at the all in to sit and watch everyone start to catch it took me about 40 mins to catch and it was on a line at 13m to my left well out the way of were id lobbed me breaker.
the stamp were good 15 to the pound but on a clear canal one line is never enough to catch off.
caught well between 12 and 1 oclock but stamp got smaller and slower.

i never really caught on any of my other lines till last hour then they small and slow to catch.
ended with 6lb 4oz   if i aint thrown me breaker think i would have framed with 8lb +

Ad, I have a formula for winter canals which seems to apply almost everywhere:

Winter + narrow canals + shallow water + bridge holes = no roach

I think the middle and/or widest part of any stretch is where the roach and skimmers naturally shoal up at this time of year. Bridge holes are great for perch and only seem to hold numbers of roach if there's some depth or cover.
