This weekend i returned to the Glebe fishery for  The Ivan Marks Weekend and i must say i was made very welcome . What had gone off in the past is left in the past and the reason for being there is Linda and Chris.
Like i said i had a great welcome at the draw and yet again a sellout .the day before it had fished its head off with over 40 hundred pound weights. with 210lb winning day 1 Jason Le Bosquet finishing off a great week after winning the UK. who's who of the commercial anglers were there plus all the regulars from the Glebe  and me who hadn't been up for a couple of years along with a few old faces that always support the weekend . The draw was in the track so a good breakfast is always on the cards  and plenty of time to talk friends old and new .i had been on the phone trying to pick out my attack and what i thought would a easy choice caster shallow turned out a massive mistake 
These experts are so clue up on reading a water its frightening i drew a peg that Adam Wakalin had had 195lb off the day before yes some shallow and some dobbing and nothing down the margins.well at least i thought i had choosen the right method
 

Yes i was back on the Foundation lake but this time it it was the one to draw  ::) ::) maybe the day before

Rigs set up shallow shallow shallow and a margin rig and i was ready

bait tray pellets, casters and worm simple might of been under gunned with a solid 10 on a puller .walking around i could see some anglers with elephant laggy and number 2 sections cut back
At this point i remembered a old saying that Graham Barry had told me and it was his mother that said it to him .NEVER TRY AND STEP OUT OF YOUR CLASS !!! and i must say i was surrounded by top class locals and top class commercial experts



It was quite clear as i walked around the lake the fish had only one thing on there minds .darting through the water in pairs even when playing a fish one or two would follow it in 
well at the all in i started pinging in casters think how long will it take to catch my first fish i had it all to myself as everyone had started in the margins and thinking what Adam had said i could be needing 3 nets  needless to say 3 skimmers and a small carp in the first hour and half by which time everyone had loads down the margin. should i carry on or should i try the margin  same old me  i tried the margin 3 carp in 10 minutes then nothing so i fed again  i then foul hooked 2 or 3 and from that point lost my way yet again  i managed 40lb 93lb to my left not much better the other side as he didn't weigh in another had packed up 150lb won the lake 141lb 2nd loads of 50,60,70 boy did i feel out of my depth  Rob  Wootton won the event for the 4th time what a display of commercial angling 242lb rob had caught it must be in your blood
when i got home i put my commercial kit away kicked myself and said its not for me unless you go 100% commercial fishing and three times a week you're never going to be in the same class 
next year i will be up there watching and learning rather than fishing but what a fishery it must be the best in the country.

Joff, just read what every one posts so regular. Commercials are a piece a yellow stream, its not fishing its catching.......

I can tell you from experience that yes to an extent it is catching as the float goes under most times through the shift, however doing it right and competing is a totally different ball game. Its no secret I moved more to the dark side the last couple of years after fishing natural venues for over 30 years and I can tell you hand on heart these " catching " venues take 10 times the amount of working out than any natural venue I have fished. I have competed and won at the very best level on natural venues, shallow canals, deep canals, trent, don, lock erne, Voorne and venues like Res and the Huntspill and although the fishing approach changes to each of these venues, what doesn't change much is the approach, by that I mean canals are squatt to a line you pick out, worm and or caster across, worm inside and maybe a punch or maggot line. Then of coarse Bloodworm where allowed through winter. Rivers, a feeder line picked out with either Maggot or crumb feeder depending on draw and what you was fishing for, a pole line on some and then a running float or waggler with hemp and bronze maggot usually being a top scorer.
Then you go to commercials and where do you start, the right bait can change by the day from meat to corn, worm and caster, plain pellet or dead maggot to name but a few, will they want it shallow, are they on the deck, do they want it down edge, are they sat around island. How many times have I been fishing a peg catching crappity smack all, saying to myself this is another five finger shuffle draw theres nothing here and then changed lines by just one section and caught one a chuck for the rest of the match, they are there but just will not move. From a returns point of view the natural venues have been far better to me, but having said that I have done it for a lot more years. Times have changed round here now, 2 or 3 teams folding every year so canal scene all but crappity smacked, commercials getting stronger month by month. Its a shame but that dictates where I have to put my efforts so until we go full circle its the darkside for me at the moment

Yep your welcome to commercials . All or nothing if you want to compete and beat venue regulars and full time anglers . A few lads I know beat these on a regular basis and hold down proper full time jobs , I can only admire their dedication and love of the sport

Big cup I will alway stand up and own up where I go wrong yesterday was about end pegs and gaps but doing it right was key . Robs Wootton is a machine at doing right at a place like the glebe netting fish quickly is a art I'm afraid it showed
me up and made me realise I've perhaps reach a point whether to do one or the other natural or commercial I haven't the time to do both pulling out of the Drennan knockout this week made me realise and yesterday confirmed it was a good decision
Perhaps when I have more time  but I take my hat off to the anglers that do it day in day out there
I can't see many outsiders qualifying for the big finals anymore. looking at the lists so fare

I think the day was a lesson and not a negative one. If we want to succeed we have to analyse failure observe success and adapt. If fishing was easy we would get bored and not improve. Even top anglers have to keep improving or else the chasing pack catch up,so keep improving .

IVAN MARKS MEMORIAL 2014

The 10th Ivan Marks Memorial event was held at Mallory Park Fisheries Saturday 17th May

A scorching day greeted the 80 competitors and expectations were mixed.
The fish started to spawn on Glebe Pool 1 and everyone had fish thrashing everywhere. This did not stop the fish feeding and the results from every lake were outstanding with almost half the field weighing in more than 100lbs.

At least 9 Anglers were in the running to try and achieve the highest individual weight of the two-day event.
The highest individual weight of either day will receive the prestigious Ivan Marks Trophy from Linda Marks

Tomorrow (Sunday) the highest weight angler will have to catch more than 210lbs to beat the top weight today that was Jason Bosquet.
Scores of anglers have fished this friendly event every year and although many are not top-flight anglers they all comment how nice it is just to be fishing this event.

Linda Marks supports several great charities and entry ticket proceedings from everyone will be distributed to them.

Ivan Marks Memorial day 2.

What a difference a day makes, 100 anglers fished in glorious conditions with a nice southerly breeze putting a ripple on most pegs
Most people wanted to draw Glebe 1 in the big numbers after yesterdays match.
Today the fish on Glebe 1 just carried on spawning and were less interested in feeding.
The place to be was Glebe Pools 4,5,6 & 7 where almost everyone weighed in over 100lbs.
In total 39 anglers weighed more than 100lbs and 4 anglers had over 199lbs.

It was going to be a close call between the top 4 anglers, but at the weigh in Leicester’s Dynamite Rob Wooton just had enough with a fantastic weight of 243lbs fishing up in the water on Glebe 1 peg 2.
Marukyu angler Mick Wilkinson hard pushed him with 223lbs from Glebe Pool 4.
Young angler Ben Sharp of Melton Angling was also pushing hard with 206lbs from Glebe 1 peg 30.
Always consistent Preston backed Angler Adam Wakelin fishing on Glebe Pool 5 down the margin weighed a very credible 199lbs.
Linda Marks presented the trophy for the fourth time to Rob Wooton, fishery owner Roy Marlow commented that Rob is an outstanding gifted angler at any method of catching fish and it was a flawless performance.
