Garbolino and Bait-Tech star leads UK Champs!
Yesterday saw Nottingham rod, Jason le Bosquet, blitz the first round of the Old Ghost UK Championships at Somerset’s Viaduct Fishery, with an astonishing 249lb 8oz. The match was well attended, with 77 anglers fishing, and with five weights over the magical 200lb mark.

Drawn on Peg 81 on the renowned Cary Lake, Jason finished just ahead of Maver’s new signing, Simon Skelton, who caught 241lb 7oz by dobbing fish that were cruising around just under the surface.

Talking to Pole Fishing, an overwhelmed Jason said: “It’s great to get off to a good start, especially with a big weight like that! I came down and practiced the day before the match, and found that once you had mugged a few early fish, there would be a very quiet hour when everybody struggled for bites. During this period, it was essential to put something in the net. I fished meat on the long pole, and caught nearly 20lb of skimmers and tench in no time. These made all the difference at the weigh-in!

“It was at least two hours before I saw anybody catching down the margins, but as soon as I did it was time to feed mine. With the fish ready for spawning, I again fished meat here. I’ve found that carp especially like protein at this time of year – and meat is packed with the stuff!

“I fed both my left and right margins, taking an odd fish of each of them. It sounds crazy, but action wasn’t thick and fast. The fish in Cary are so big, that you don’t need to catch them quickly! My biggest probably went 18lb, and it was vital to be careful how much you fed so as not to foul hook them. The last thing you want is a double-figure Viaduct carp hooked up the bum!

“Already I’m looking forward to the next round at Garbolino Lindholme Lakes. I’m confident of doing well there – especially if the weather stays warm and I can bring my chopped-worm attack into play!”

Jason is a previous winner of the UK Championships from 2011, and picked up a cheque for £1,000 for winning round one of this years event.
