Ultimate Barnsley Blacks blitz Preston World Club Classic.
Ultimate Barnsley Blacks have won the fourth Preston Innovations World Club Classic, which was fished on the Great Ouse at Littleport in Cambridgeshire this weekend.
The match – which is contested by the ten highest finishers in the Division One National, gives the winning team a place in the World Club Championsip next year, and a cheque for £7,000, courtesy of the sponsors Preston Innovations.
Barnsley’s team – which was made up of Alan Scotthorne, Lee Kerry, Matt Godfrey, James Dent, Sam Wildsmith and Steve Barraclough won nine sections out of a possible twelve over the two day event – beating second placed Daiwa Dorking by a seven point margin. Matrix Dynamite Trentmen took home the third place cheque, finishing some 34 points behind the leaders.
In the individual stakes, Barnsley team man, and Pole Fishing Magazine’s Editorial Assistant, Matt Godfrey proved an unstoppable force on the Cambridgeshire river – winning both matches outright, and taking individual glory with a total weight of 24kg 50gs of roach over the two days.
Matt explained: “The team is absolutely over the moon to have won – it is still sinking in really. I am sure we caught it right in terms of time of year, but the venue is absolutely teeming with roach, easily the most prolific natural venue that I have ever fished in the UK. It was announced at the presentation that over 600kg of fish were caught over the two day contest, an average of over 5kg per man per day.
To represent England in the World Club Championship will be a great honour, it is to be held in Slovenia next year – at the same venue the ladies won gold from last month. Myself, Alan Scotthorne, Lee Kerry and James Dent have all fished the venue in the past – so go into the match very confident of our chances.”
Barnsley’s team tactics revolved around balling in leam at the start of the match to create a cloud in the water, before following it in with several balls of groundbait packed with joker. Fishing bloodworm on the hook saw the northern rods catch dumpy roach, and the occasional rudd and small skimmer for the duration of the four hour match.
With Preston Innovations signing a four year contract to back the event in 2009, this years contest could be the last to run, unless a new sponsor is found.
Matt concluded: “On behalf of all the competitors, we would like to say a big thank you to the sponsors, Preston Innovation for supporting the event over the last four years, and to the Angling Trust for choosing such a great venue, and running the event so smoothly. I really hope a new sponsor can be found, so the event can continue to run in future years.”

World club qualifier result
Total domination great to see ChrisV and Tom in the top 10
sounds like a great venue lived up to its name i hope they ear mark the time of year and use it again
A little point do you think this result is good for this sort of competition would the result been any different if the 10 ten teams had fished [yes as barnsley were 17th]
I still say Shakespeare should of had the chance of going to the world club championships but i'm also glad a team like Barnsley are flying the flag for England as you know they will put everything into and getting a result let not forget the other teams that made this possible well done to all that took part
