Burton Festival 17-19 September 2013[ch8207]

Unread post by TK »

Another very successful festival on the River Trent at Burton!  Although conditions weren’t too good for the sell-out field - a very cold and clear river coupled with blustery winds made float presentation difficult in some areas.  Those anglers pegged in the more sheltered areas benefitted with the vast shoals of roach willing to feed.

Trent legend Colin Walton mastered a tricky peg on the wall at Shardlow, fishing stick float on hemp and caster, his catch of 19lb 6oz was made up of quality roach up to 1lb, and was enough to win Day 1.  Colin just edged out Mark Lindsey whose 18lb 10oz of mainly roach caught on hemp seed on the long pole at Sherratts Farm.  Clive Fletcher who was also at Sherratts fished waggler and bronze maggot to put a level 18lb on the scales.

Day 2 saw Toby Bunting on Baileys peg 1 have a late run of quality roach on hemp seed to win the day with 15lb 4oz.  The next weight of 13lb 11oz was caught by Fred Prudham also fishing at Baileys on waggler and bronze maggot.  Simon Heaton took third place with 13lb 8oz again roach on waggler and maggot from Shardlow.

With a 20lb 2oz catch, Steve Whitfield won Day 3.  Steve fished 7 metre whip to hand with maggots and casters to record the best roach weight of the festival.  Second came Spig Polowski fishing on Sherratts with waggler and bronze maggot put together a level 16lb bag of roach.  Coming in third for the second day running was Simon Heaton also pegged on Sherratts, waggler fishing his way to 13lb 8oz of roach.

This festival is always very close and it was no exception this year, 5 points separated the top 10.  Dave Webb and former winner Andy Dixon tied on 6 points.  Dave Webb just edged it on weight to become the 2013 Burton Angling Festival Champion.  Dave who has fished the festival for the last 4 years put in a great 3 days performance off not too brilliant pegs to claim his win.

Festival organisers Tony Vandome and Wayne Swinscoe would like to thank all the sponsors for their continued generosity in supporting this event.  Sponsors: Shakespeare, Coors, Bait-Tech, Drennan and Wovencrest.  Thanks also Derby Railway Angling Club for use of their Shardlow waters.

This year’s festival was sold out two months in advance and will definitely be on again next year – entries will be available in February for the 2014 festival.  For information and to book in contact Tony Vandome on 01283 512711.
