Hi Gale,
it is almost impossible ro explain had to tie any knot. From how you are explaining it may be something as simple as dropping a bit of spit (hope I've spelt that right!) on the knot before you pull it.
There are a few sites on Tinternet that do diagrams of knots, - if you have a root around you will find some. Most are American but a knot is a knot in any country. Try googling nylon fishing knots and you should have a choice.

Hi Gale,
WOC calling and I would like to TRY to suggest another way to attach connector to elastic.
Hard to explain and easy to show.
Maybe if we meet on the bank sometime..?
Local to you ,only in Surrey.
Let me try...ah very trying I am.
Attach lacky to connector;.my way.
take elastic and form a loop.
Push loop through connector hole as double.(first push cap bit up lacky)
If it will not go through easily use bit looped line to pull through.
Once through fold over end of connector(the bit you put the loop of line on)
Then pull tight and neatly fold into groove on top of connector..pull down and push on cap with bit 'tag' lacky hanging out.cut to suit.
No knots and the more tension on elastic the tighter it will pull down on itself and never..never slip.
Clear As Mud. eh
If my pathetic words are to be understood..have a go.
If not I will show in person.
Cheers...WOC
