Dispelling the myth..............
Dispelling the myth..............
'The club looses loads of money because of poor turnouts on river matches. That's were the club's money goes..........it's a no brainer, knock the river matches on the head'
A few stats & costings so far with 12 out of 15 matches gone.......
We've fished :-
4 scheduled canal matches
2 matches originally scheduled for the river, which had to be transfered to the canal because of conditions
5 scheduled pool venues
Ok we pay £30 per man club subs per annum - 25 x £30 = £750 per annum
So where's that £750 gone so far as our match day pools (£5 which includes £1 golden peg) obviously doesnt get anywhere near paying the match booking cost (usually) ............
The match day receipts, plus guest fees, less our fixed payout has resulted in
Canal matches £92 profit
River match £14 loss
Pool matches £565 loss
QED
If members guests were not welcomed along, these figures would read..........
Canal matches £38 loss
River match £29 loss
Pool matches £684 loss
Coincidentally, if you cant be bothered to do the maths, those last 3 losses excluding guest income, total £751............so all this years club subscriptions would be spent with 2 further 'heavy' losses anticipated to come on the remaining two pool matches followed by a much much smaller loss expected on the remaining river match.........
Food for thought................?????
Perhaps one members suggestion to reduce the no of pool venues and have more on the cut and river wasn't so flippant or said tongue in cheek after all.........

Lose members, gain new members who would maybe appreciate the hard work of the club and committee to put us on a decent match calendar every season We have had half a dozen regular guests on most matches this year who I am certain would jump at the chance of filling the vacancies

I'm sure a number of those regulars will be invited to join us this year MrV

My financial costings/forecast when compiling the fixture list is based on the clubs subs (£750) plus the revenue from an average turnout - across all venues, pools/canals/rivers - of 20 per match
So in effect, given the considerably cheaper peg fee, revenue from canals and river matches has in previous years supported the total expenditure incurred with pool venues.......
Given we have 25 full members and 4 honorary life members you wouldn't think an average turnout of 20 (69%) would be too difficult to realize..........
Aok, members will always have some other commitments - holidays, illness, family matters - that cause bona fide absence from matches...........
But despite 'pushing out the boat' this year and spending the most I've ever done on supposedly the 'better' commercials our average membership turnout for these pool matches has dropped to 18 (62%)

here is the answer to why fishing clubs are dying in their numbers year after year. How many clubs can run at making a loss? Not many. Like youve mentioned in most clubs cases if the opt for cheaper venues, cuts, rivers and poor pools were the catch rates are low will result in member numbers dropping, to fish over stocked commis were catch rates are high membership prices have to rise massively resulting in members leaving because they cant afford the membership fee, so what is the answer?????
On top of this add the cost of fuel to venues, cost of bait rising, cost of tackle ect and it explains why fishing is a dying sport.

We aint actually dying ME or running at a loss, despite the figures I've quoted above
And the fact we've a 'waiting list' for 'full' membership must mean that we are doing something right
The £750 collected in subsciptions is 'meant' to be spent on peg fees - supported by the bankside revenue we collect on match days..............its just that attendances on matches - incl the 'expensive' venues - have dropped this year.
This inturn would have resulted in a deficit to the clubs bank balance for 2012 if it hadn't been for the revenue collected from guest fees. This coincidentally has come primarily from guests who are on the waiting list to join us

tk i wasnt implying that cashmores club is dying but was just saying after the info of costs you published plus other costs a club as is he reason fishing club sene is dying to what it used to be. How many clubs and how big are the clubs today compared to 10 yrs ago, compared to 20 yrs ago ect ?? How many clubs will be left in the future? Even the club that this site started through (yale) is no longer running.

Dispelling the myth..............
At the end of the day, I think Cashmores have got it more or less "spot on". Thats why we have a waiting list of potential members. Lots of anglers buy many season tickets for a few different clubs. I do, but its not to fish all their matches, its mainly to have access to their waters to pleasure fish. My payment to these clubs probably boosts their coffers enough to enable them to rent waters or book matches on high peg fee commercials.
For what its worth, here is my opinion on how it would be if I was to run a club. I would organise matches on natural venues, where peg fees are relatively low. Ok, weights would not be as impressive as commercial venues, but members would be people who wanted to fish natural venues, so their expectancy would not be so high. Commy fanatics wouldn't join the club, as they would not be catered for on the match scene. There are plenty of clubs out there who book all their matches on commies, and cater for the commie fanatics. Trouble is, I don't have the time to run a club, so therefore its easier for me to fish for another club.
To fish with Cashmores this year will cost me £30 membership, and £75 pools over the 15 matches. Add on to that bait, fuel etc and it will probably run to about £300 - 400. To get me on tha banks 15 times and enjoy good banter with a cracking set of lads, and some decent varied fishing, is as Barclays say "PRICELESS" !!!
Don't change a thing!! If it aint broke, don't fix it
