2nd round took place yesterday on the Trent and Mersey canal from all the hype this was the venue that would fish ;) ;)rugeley has some great roach fishing and everyone was expecting a few double figured weights Image Image but as usual the weather put pay to that yet again with the temperature never warming up all day Image Image Imagebasic rigs were set as i had drawn another bridge hole ::) ::)not one but two :o :o :oand this did look the part [if i can download the picture i will]i had gathered what info i could get and bearing mind this was the first B/J match for several year Image Imageso it could of been really good or really bad
i set my traps feeding 175ml on one line this was my banker if the roach turned up ,but watching those anglers around me it was quite clear i might of under cooked it Image Imagebut the old saying came to mind "you can always put more in but you can't take any out " ;) ;) ;)i had one more hole in front of me where i put 75ml and thought i'd start at 5 metres Image Imagethis line produced nothing so i moved over and after about one hour and a few phone calls the whole length was fishing rubbish with odd perch and in some sections odd chub Image Imagei didn't want to go on my positive line too early but i needed to put something in my net .so over it i went straight down the hole Image a perch 2inches long then another and another Image Image where were all the roach Image Imageafter a few more phone calls i decided that the bread punch might be worth ago Image Imagenow i know what you are all thinking ::) ::) ::)if you can't get a bite on bloodworm or joker why do you think bread is going to make a difference :-? :-? :-? i can't explain that but what happened for the last 3 hours feeding very little punch i landed 26 to 30 roach all netters to a pound i didn't stop trying B/j i simply couldn't catch on it apart from very small perch don't get me wrong the bread punch wasn't fast put each roach was worth the wait Imageto wards the end of the match i did introduce some joker with the punch and in the last 15 minutes i put a pound of joker fish in the net by the end of the match i had managed 7lb2oz and it was good enough for a section win and a added bonus 3rd overall Image Image and with the lads all catching it was dayshavoo collecting our second victory in the series Image Image
dazzala won the match with some lobby caught perch 11lb odd another brilliant result for him and rob parker 2nd with8lb odd
afterwards the discussion was all about if I'd of put my B/J in the same place as my bread punch i would of caught them just as well :-/ :-/i'm not convinced as these were quality fish more like caster roach what do you think
and yes i was on a good area ::) ::) ::)and yes i don't think anyone in my section had bread with them
just a few more fish and i'd of run 1st place close Image

Great result Joff Image As I said to you when I came and sat with you, I had walked quite a bit of the match length and saw nobody fishing the punch except you (Bill would be proud of you!!) Image I see Digger Conway made 6th in the match, and I would bet he used the punch at some stage through the match :)
Despite the number of boats that ran through the match, its a shallow canal, and the colour soon drops back out after a boat, so I am surprised anglers didn't gamble on a punch line, even if it was "an out of the way" line that still allowed them to fish their W & J lines. :-/
There had been a practice session down the Ash Tree end the week before, which had resulted in 7lb + weights, so the fish are there. The problem you lads had was the 2 previous nights hard frosts probably pushed the fish into tighter shoals.
I was surprised to see anglers packing up after 2 hours moaning about "crap venues". Wonder how that went down with their team mates. Image
Anyway, having seen you on another "flier" yesterday, I think we should rename you DBM (Draw Bag Master) Image Image

Well done joff! I think you caught on bread because the roach haven't seen bloodworm for a long time and it can take them a while to "turn" to it. Look at the world club champs qualifier on newark dyke for example, in the practice days leading up to the event most were struggling on bloodworm (with the exception of a few areas), but the more of it that went in the more you caught! :) Think you probably just tempted a few into having a go on a bait that they would see a bit of now and then from pleasure anglers and the like? Who knows :P I tried it early on in the match but never had a bite on it! Maybe should have kept topping it up and trying it every so often? Definitely worth considering for next time... :D :D :D

mrv thanks for the info mate nice to meet you as well Imagejust after you left i had a run on joker over the top of the bread yet still didn't have a bite over the area i'd put 150ml :D :D :D really got me thinking that perhaps sometimes we are so stereotyped in the way we fish
i'm sure thats one way bicko thinks if he'd of fished a b/j match i might of beaten him as it was he too chose another bait that scored well for him Image Imagea lot of the time we are like sheep and follow what others do Image

I used to fish Burton area years ago in angling times league and the bread punch was always a get out line especially in the rat holes when the boats got going. I've always found it a must have on this canal.
