All our yesterdays....a trawl through the archives
Being the anorak that I am, whilst documenting the clubs results for posterity, I also had a ‘light read’ of the minutes from 1971.
It’s interesting to learn how the club has ‘evolved’ over the 40 years. It’s also interesting to see how some of today’s issues existed back then and how they were addressed. Some have resurfaced due I feel to a little ‘complacency’ or a more relaxed attitude that we adopt today.
The minutes also give an insight into slightly differing attitudes of that age, the clubs organisation and how it was run
There are many snippets that are food for thought. Over the coming weeks I’ll post a few for you to digest. Who knows, they may even stimulate an idea or two …..
If however anyone has any valid objection to a particular topic that I quote and post on this medium, please let me know………….

Starting with this..........
Meeting 31st Aug1972 - Membership Fees
‘It was proposed by Mr B Bradley and seconded by Mr K Pearce that the membership fees for 1973 be increased to £3 per person. This has been forced upon us by rising costs, not least of which is the decision of the Severn River Authority to make a charge for future contests of 15p per peg’ (From what I can deduce, the club used to have 4 ‘free’ contests on SRA waters and 4 on BAA which they were affiliated to)

At the same meeting we see the birth of the concept of a Club Champion or 'Aggregate Winner' as it's often referred to........
Prizes
‘In addition to the monetary prizes it was decided to award a trophy plus a small replica for the highest aggregate (Club Champion) over the year based on a points system. The points system devised to determine the highest aggregate (Club Champion) was that for each contest 10 points would be awarded to the winner, 9 points for second place and so on to 1 point for 10th place’
Interesting the points system which was initially adopted with so many members (40) in the club

Meeting 4thJan 1973 - Club Weighing Scales
‘Mr M Roberts pointed out that in the past we have been fortunate in being able to borrow scales belonging to Ocker Hill Angling Club for use in our contests, but the time had now come for us to consider purchasing our own scales’
Contest rules
‘Mr M Roberts informed the meeting that certain members had been breaking the rules on some of our earlier contests. As some of our members stated that they are not fully conversant with the rules, XXXXX Mr A Griffin promised to provide copies. It was also suggested by V Priest that a referee should be appointed for each contest to ensure the rules are strictly adhered to.’
Although we fish loosely to NFA rules, perhaps we should issue a set of rules both as a reminder to existing members and for info to new members?

?? Who is the mystery XXXXX?

Edited above to resolve all the intrigue MGB I'd started knocking up these notes by blanking out all names - then I slipped them back in , but obviously missed that one
Moving on - the club grows in size.........
Meeting 15th Mar 1973 - Limit on Membership
‘It was proposed by Mr T Rudge and seconded by Mr M Roberts that our membership limit be increased from 35 to 40 with priority for these extra places given to Cashmores employees. This was accepted by the majority of those present at the meeting.’
The meeting also saw the introduction of the knockout competition - but in a different format to today. What a nightmare for the MGB - collecting all those 10ps every round !!!
each competitor fishing against another competitor.(Pairs to be drawn by the secretary. Cost was 10p for each person for each round, payable in advance. People drawing ‘buys’ also paid 10p. Fees collected for were split, the majority going to the winner, balance to the runner up.

At the same meeting........
Visitors on Contests
‘Following recent controversy on this subject it was decided by the meeting that if pegs are available visitors will be allowed to fish for pool monies provided that they pay pool entrance fees, pay for and draw a peg. Visitors to wait until last to draw a peg after the members present at the time of the draw. Members arriving late will obviously draw pegs after the visitors who arrived at the correct time.’

Any other business
‘Following the contest held at Atcham on 17th February 1973 when no fish were caught it was suggested that this contest be re-arranged for a later date.’
Now I know we've fished a few matches over the last 15 yrs I've been booking the matches - but I cant recollect having all dry nets in a match
Been close once or twice though

Any other business again at the same meeting
‘Following the activities during and after our contest at Bredon on March 3rd, it must once again be emphasized to members that they are liable to disqualification if they leave their pegs before they have weighed in. (Please refer to club rules)’
Wander what those 'activities' were?
Looks like the club was almost a stickler for applying this rule back in those days........

Well not a lot changes..........
Meeting 26th Jun 1973- Pegging Out
‘Due to personal problems XXXXX asked to be relieved of the responsibility of pegging out for the next 3 or 4 contests. It was therefore decided by the meeting that volunteers should be called for to carry out these duties. Volunteers are asked to put their names forward so that a rota may be drawn up for future contests.’
A tad ironical that 38 years later on - at our last AGM in Nov - this working 'rule' needed to be 'reinforced/readopted' so as this task didnt fall upon the same person......as it tended to

A bit more on pegging out at the next meeting
Meeting 10th Nov 1973
‘The club was reminded by Mr A Griffin that pegging out for contests should be carried out by one committee member (there were 7) accompanied by one club member’

Meeting 5th Mar & 2nd April 1974- Latecomers on contests
‘An inconvenience is caused to committee members who have to stop fishing to deal with latecomers on contests. It was decided by the committee that this matter should once again be discussed at a future club meeting to decide if and how such late comers should be penalised’
‘Much discussion was held on this controversial subject with views both for and against penalising latecomers being put forward. As no agreement could be reached an appeal was made to all members to make very effort to avoid being late on future contests’
Wonder how late they were turning up if those running the matches were having to stop fishing????

Walking was certainly the 'hot topic' those days

'It was reported to the meeting by Mr M Roberts that during the last contest at Pershore one of the anglers left his peg for no valid reason. As this was not reported to the committee at the time, no action could be taken, but it must be emphasized that all club members are obliged to report any infringement of the contest rules as soon as possible after the end of a contest, so that appropriate action can be taken.’

‘Mr W Upton mentioned that various infringements of the club contest rules had come to his attention recently (ie fishing before and after the whistle) and emphasized that the club rules must be adhered to.'

Changing subject, a bit of an eye opener at the same meeting........
Contest arrangements v Newport Team to be fished on the River Usk in Nov 1974
‘A deposit of 25p will be required to cover the cost of a day licence. A condition of our being allowed to fish this contest is that all game fish caught must be returned immediately to the water and serious repercussions could follow if anyone is found disregarding this rule.
Coarse fish should be killed following the weigh in and not returned to the water. As this latter condition caused some dispute amongst our members, the secretary was asked to contact Newport to see if any arrangements could be made to dispose of the fish, rather than kill them.’
Not sure what the outcome was of this
