Garbolino Winter Festival Day One
Garbolino Winter Festival

It is time for the final festival of the year and considering that this time in 2010 all of the lakes were frozen solid we have high hopes for the week to come.

Although the conditions are no where near as harsh as last year the anglers are not in for the easiest of weeks as there are gales and rain forecast for a lot of the week so the festival is certainly living up to its "winter" name.

It the few days leading up to the festival it was relatively mild and those anglers that made the trip down early to practise have been catching plenty of fish but by the time the festival had started the temperature had dropped a few degrees and the high winds were upon us.

There are 59 anglers fishing the festival this year and we have made a couple of changes to the sections being used in the hope we give them the best possible fishing. This week we are using Pollawyn, Jennys, Trelawney, Pollawyn (points)/Sycamore & Twin Oaks

As this is a smaller festival it gives us the opportunity to do the draw for the sections live in the pub on Saturday evening, also giving the anglers the chance to have a few beers and catch up with people that some haven't seen for the last 12 months. There is a great atmosphere this week and there is just as much competition over the pool and table tennis as there is the fishing!

Day One

To make sure the anglers get the most amount of time to set up we will be doing the draw at 8.30 this week. Breakfast is being served in the restaurant so after an "all you can eat" buffet start to the day the anglers then wonder on through to the pub for the first draw of the week.

Read on to see how the first day of the festival panned out.

A Section Pollawyn

In recent winter leagues there has been great silver fish fishing on Pollawyn and today was no exception with reasonable weights coming from across the 12 pegs. Callum Dicks on peg 31 was the lake winner today, Callum caught roach on casters and bream on groundbait and worm for a total weight of 46lb 3oz. Simon Poynter weighed in with 42lb 13oz to take second, Simon caught at 5 meters and down the edge on casters and maggot from peg 13. Trevor Vernalls was third, Trevor caught on the short pole and the long pole shallow with casters and maggots from peg 30 for a weight of 23lb 4oz.

Section Winners

Callum Dicks peg 31 6 points 46lb 3oz
Wayne Swinscoe peg 17 6 points 19lb 6oz

B Section Jennys

Jennys was one of the most consistent lakes today when it came to weights and it was also close across the board. Just a couple of the anglers out of the 12 pegs didn't do as well but for the others it was very close when it came down to the section points. Winning the lake today with a weight of 34lb 12oz was Tony Morton; Tony was on peg 16 and caught at 11 meters on maggot. Paul Yates on peg 8 was second, Paul caught on the long pole with corn for a weight of 29lb 5oz. Derek Hammond was third, Derek caught on the pole with groundbait and chapped worm and worm on the hook for a weight of 21lb 12oz from peg 18.

Section Winners

Tony Morton peg 16 6 points 34lb 12oz
Paul Yates peg 8 6 points 29lb 5oz

C Section Trelawney

Trelawney had been fishing much better recently but the F1's that the anglers had been sacking up on in practise seemed to be elusive today with not as many being caught and they were more of a bonus fish. The lake win today went to Rob Fuller on peg 10; Rob weighed in with 31lb 9oz and caught at 13 meters on the pole with groundbait and maggot. Nathan Hughes weighed in with 30lb 1oz to take second, Nathan was on peg 9 caught mainly F1's at 13 meters on maggot but also had a few fish at 10 meters on groundbait. Third with 29lb 12oz was Adam Wakelin, Adam caught on the short pole with casters from peg 15.

Section Winners

Rob Fuller peg 10 6 points 31lb 9oz
Dean Kenworthy peg 23 6 points 17lb 8oz

D Section Sycamore/Pollawyn

This split section has been altered this year as we normally used Python with Sycamore but in recent matches Python has shown to be even peggier than usual and the points on Pollawyn have been fishing much better which is why we have changed the section. The lake winner today was Steve Hemmingray on Pollawyn peg 22, Steve weighed in with 39lb 7oz which was a mixed bag of roach, perch and skimmers that were all caught on casters. Second with 33lb 10oz was Jon Arthur, Jon was on peg 19 and caught mainly barbell on maggot and casters. Steve Mayo on peg 24 was third, Steve caught on casters short and down the edge and on the long pole with groundbait for a total weight of 32lb 12oz. The best weight on Sycamore was 26lb 8oz and this came from Skip Mccabe on peg 7, Skip caught on the long pole with casters and groundbait.

Section Winners

Steve Hemmingray peg 22(P) 6 points 39lb 7oz
Skip McCabe peg 7(S) 6 points 26lb 8oz

E Section Twin Oaks

It is great to be able to use these lakes once again in the festival as they have been known to provide some fantastic silver fishing. Last year we were unable to use them not only because they were frozen but because the road was impassable due to ice and snow and it was very hazardous as it is so remote it doesn't get gritted. Lots of fish have been coming out in practise but there is a difference in the two sides of the lakes with the higher numbered side having a lot more F1's than the other but we shall see how this affects the weights as the week goes on. Simon Fry was today's winner with 57lb, Simon was on peg 28 and caught 50lbs of F1's on maggot and 35 roach on casters. Second went to Cameron Hughes on peg 35, Cameron caught F1's on maggot and groundbait for a weight of 50lb 10oz. On peg 34 Andy Moors weighed in with 36lb 11oz to take third, Andy caught on groundbait and maggot.

Section Winners

Simon Fry peg 28 6 points 57lb
Timmy Rowe peg 2 6 points 35lb 12oz

That was the action from day one and here is how our fist top ten looks.

Overall Top Ten

1st Simon Fry 6 points 57lb

Garbolino Winter Festival

After a promising start to the festivals the anglers were in for a battering today with the heavy rain and gale force winds that started over night carrying on throughout the day For some presentation was near on impossible but despite some incredibly harsh conditions there were still good catches across the lakes.

Day Two

With day one under their belts and after studying yesterdays weigh sheets in depth conversations in the bar last night the anglers now have a bit more idea on the forms of the lakes and what they should be looking to do.

With a section win on day one some of the anglers will be looking for high points once again whist others know they need to up there game if they want a result come the end of the week. Do we have anyone on maximum points? Read on for the action from day two and our latest leader board.

A Section Jennys

Well today Jennys seemed more fit for surfing than fishing! As one of the most exposed lakes on the complex the anglers got a proper battering today. Although the weights were down across the lake it was still reasonably fair but the higher numbered section seems to be producing the better weights. Winning the lake today with 22lb 12oz was Simon Poynter on peg 19, Simon caught on the pole at 8 meters with groundbait, squatt & pinkie. Callum Dicks on peg 14 was second, Callum caught at 11 meters on groundbait and maggot and down the edge on worms for a total weight of 22lb 2oz. Third was Wayne Swinscoe, Wayne weighed in with 18lb 5oz caught on the pole at 11 meters with groundbait, maggot and a few worms from peg 17.

Section Winners

Simon Poynter peg 19 6 points 22lb 12oz
Paul Newell peg 9 6 points 15lb 2oz

B Section Trelawney

Despite the terrible conditions the weights were up across Trelawney today with more of the F1's showing. The weights were also close across the lake so when it comes to the dropped result at the end of the week the better weights the anglers had on here today might be key to a better position in the overall festival. Ian Shepard caught F1's on the pole at 9 meters with maggot today to take the lake win, Ian was on peg 24 and had a total weight of 45lb 6oz. Second went to Paul Yates on peg 10, Paul weighed in with 38lb 3oz which was 60 F1's that were caught on the long pole with maggot and groundbait. Harry Billing was third with 37lb 9oz; Harry caught around 30 F1's on the 11 meter pole with groundbait and maggot from peg 27.

Section Winners

Ian Shepherd peg 24 6 points 45lb 6oz
Paul Yates peg 10 6 points 38lb 3oz

C Section Sycamore/Pollawyn

Good weights from both lakes in this section today and even though the weather was horrid the fishing improved on Sycamore with the points on Pollawyn also competing well. The lake winner today on Pollawyn peg 20 was Nathan Hughes, Nathan caught on the waggler with maggot for a weight of 45lb 4oz. Grant Albutt on Sycamore peg 10 was second, Grant had a weight of 36lb 1oz and caught on the short pole with casters. Tim Bruce on Pollawyn peg 21 was third, Tim caught on dead maggot over chopped worm and caster for a weight of 26lb 12oz.

Section Winners

Nathan Hughes peg 20 6 points 45lb 4oz
Grant Albutt peg 10 6 points 36lb 1oz

D Section Twin Oaks

Good weights also today on the two lakes at Twin Oaks. The anglers were drenched and nearly blown off their boxes but it didn't stop them getting their heads down and landing the bites. The high numbered side is still producing the bigger weights but there are still pleanty of silvers to be had in the other side and the weights were very close for points. The lake win today went to Skip McCabe with 61lb 6oz; Skip was on peg 29 and caught at 7 meters on the deck with worms and casters. Steve Mayo weighed in with 56lb to take second, Steve caught on the long pole with groundbait and maggot from peg 28. Third was Andy Dare on peg 31, Andy caught on the pole at 11 meters on maggot and groundbait for a weight of 40lb 6oz.

Section Winners

Skip McCabe ` peg 29 6 points 61lb 1oz
Jason Le Bosquet peg 5 6 points 28lb 1oz

E Section Pollawyn

Pollawyn fished harder today and seems to be affected the most out of all the lakes after a heavy bout of rain. Although the weights were close across both of the sections they were down on yesterday and the section in the middle seems to be fishing harder. It was a game of two halves for so many of the anglers on here were a lot of them only having their fish in the last two hours of the match after sitting for the first two hours in the bitter howling wind without a bite. The lake winner today on peg 29 was Tommy Pickering, Tommy caught 52 skimmers at 6 meters on groundbait and maggot for a weight of 34lb 9oz. Cameron Hughes was on peg 27 and was second with 25lb 12oz, Cameron caught on the short pole with groundbait and worm. On peg 14 Darren Cox was third with a weight of 25lb; Darren caught skimmers at 3 meters on dead reds over groundbait.

Section Winners

Tommy Pickering peg 29 6 points 34lb 9oz
Cameron Hughes peg 27 6 points 25lb 15oz

Here is how the action from day two has affected the leader board.

Overall Top Ten

1st Skip McCabe 12 points 87lb 9oz
2nd Paul Yates 12 points 67lb 8oz
3rd Cameron Hughes 11 points 76lb 9oz
4th Nathan Hughes 11 points 75lb 5oz
5th Simon Fry 11 points 74lb 12oz
6th Callum Dicks 11 points 68lb 5oz
7th Simon Poynter 11 points 65lb 9oz
8th Ian Shepherd 11 points 65lb 9oz
9th Jon Arthur 10 points 61lb 6oz
10th Darren Cox 10 points 60lb 10oz

Two anglers are on maximum points with two section wins but once again the points and weights are incredibly close. The bad news is that heavier rain is set to come in and last overnight but should have cleared for tomorrows match, we shall just have to keep our fingers crossed that the cold rain and slight drop in temperature does not have too much of a negative affect.

Garbolino/Mosella Winter Festival Day Three

Day Three

After the battering the anglers received yesterday there was no let up over night with torrential rain and the strong winds continuing to rattle the lodges. The overnight cold rain is not the best for angling but thankfully doesn't seem to have put the silver off as there were still pleanty of reasonable catches today.

It was a bright start today and thankfully only a few light showers through out the course of the match, Yesterdays high winds had calmed down and although not as strong there were still some bitter gusts coming across the lakes.

We have reached the half way point in the festival and usually we have some idea of our podium finishers but the results are now incredibly close – do we have anyone on maximum points? Read on for the action from day three.

A Section Trelawney

On day one all the fish were one side, yesterday all on the other and today they seemed a bit more spread out! Despite the cold wind and amount of cold water that went in overnight today has seen the best weights of the week so far. Andy Renton was the lake winner today, Andy was on peg 9 and caught 55 F1's at 14 meters on maggot and groundbait for a weight of 43lb 1oz. Second with 42lb 7oz was Roy Chambers, Roy was on peg 15 and caught long with maggot and dry swimstim but had most of his fish in the margins on maggot. Simon Poynter on peg 24 weighed in with 38lb 2oz to take third, Simon caught 1 meter out down the margins on groundbait and maggot.

Section Winners

Andy Renton peg 9 6 points 43lb 1oz
Simon Poynter peg 24 6 points 38lb 2oz

B Section Sycamore/Pollawyn

Even though the overall weights came from Pollawyn today both Sycamore and Pollawyn have been fishing well and competing fairly with each other with the weights close on both lakes. The lake winner today with 37lb 1oz was Micky Vials; Micky caught skimmers at 16 meters on maggot from Pollawyn peg 23. Harry Billing on peg 22 was second, Harry caught on the bar at 16 meters with maggot over groundbait and also had 5 perch down the edge for a total weight of 31lb 10oz. Chris Martin weighed in with 31lb 1oz to take third, Chris was on peg 19 and caught on chopped worm and maggot. The best weight on sycamore was 30lb 4oz and this came from Steve Sanders on peg 5, Steve caught shallow on caters.

Section Winners

Micky Vials peg 23 6 points 37lb 1oz
Steve Sanders peg 5 6 points 30lb 4oz

C Section Twin Oaks

Even though there are not as many F1's in the low side the weights are still reasonable and both sections seem to be fishing fairly with close weights across the board. The lake winner today was Tim Bruce, Tim was on peg 35 and caught on chopped worm and casters in the margins for a weight of 39lb 11oz. Dean Kenworthy weighed in with 39lb 4oz to take second, Dean caught at 13 meters with red maggot over groundbait from peg 31. On peg 2 Adam Wakelin weighed in with 39lb to take third, Adam caught short on worms.

Section Winners

Tim Bruce peg 35 6 points 39lb 11oz
Adam Wakelin peg 2 6 points 39lb

D Section Pollawyn

The weights on Pollawyn have been consistent across Pollawyn these past few days with only a couple of anglers having a harder day. The weights seem to be getting closer when it comes to the vital points and the winning weights coming from across the board. Steve Hemmingray was the lake winner today with 29lb 11oz, Steve was on peg 31 and caught mainly shallow on casters but in the second half of the match had a few skimmers on the deck. Steve Winters on peg 25 was second, Steve caught shallow on casters for a weight of 26lb 13oz. Third with 26lb 10oz was Jon Arthur on peg 13, Jon caught big perch and roach down the edge on casters.

Section Winners

Steve Hemmingray peg 31 6 points 29lb 11oz
Steve Winters peg 25 6 points 26lb 13oz

E Section Jennys

It was still cold and blowy up on Jennys and although the anglers could fish the longer pole today some still struggled for bites with the low numbers especially fishing a bit harder. The lake win today went to Darren Cox on peg 15, Darren caught 15lbs of skimmers over groundbait and 20lbs of F1's late at 16 meters on corn for a total weight of 34lb 10oz. Second was Timmy Rowe on peg 2, Timmy did well on this unfancied peg and caught on the long pole with corn for a weight of 26lb 13oz. Kian Wardle weighed in with 20lb 2oz to take third, Kian was on peg 14 and caught skimmers and crucians and 13 meters on maggot over groundbait.

Section Winners

Darren Cox peg 15 6 points 34lb 10oz
Timmy Rowe peg 2 6 points 26lb 13oz

At the mid-way point of the festival here is how the top ten currently stands.

Overall Top Ten

1st Simon Poynter 17 points 103lb 11oz
2nd Paul Yates 17 points 95lb 15oz
3rd Callum Dicks 16 points 95lb 13oz
4th Cameron Hughes 16 points 95lb 10oz
5th Darren Cox 16 points 95lb 4oz
6th Steve Hemmingray 15 points 106lb 3oz
7th Adam Wakelin 15 points 94lb 10oz
8th Jon Arthur 15 points 88lb
9th Simon Fry 15 points 87lb 6oz
10th Timmy Rowe 15 points 82lb 5oz

Points won and lost across all the sections meaning no one is now on maximum points – this could all change over the next couple of days and there are still a number that can finish on a perfect 24 points once the dropper comers in to play.

At this stage it is still too close to call and depending what the draw bag has to offer some over the next couple of days it could go anyway.

This is one of the closest sets of results we have seen with literally ounces separating some. Looks like we are in for another exciting and nail biting final.

Winter Festival Day 4
Garbolino/Mosella Winter Festival

Day Four

The heavens open over night and there was no let up until early morning but the anglers woke up to a bright and reasonable day and luckily the predicted winds had escaped us. In a vast change to the previous days most of the lakes were like mill ponds!

Great results across the lakes today with some very impressive catches from the lakes now the weather has settled down a bit, read on for the action from the penultimate day of the festival and so see how the current top ten stands as we head in to the final day.

A Section Pollawyn/Sycamore

This has turned out to be a pretty fair section this year with the lakes competing well together and not having one of them dominate the overall weights. The lake winner today came from Pollawyn peg 20 where Nigel Taylor tuned in to some decent sized F1's for a weight of 53lb; Nigel caught at 14.5 meters on chopped worm and cater. Callum Dicks put in an impressive performance to take second with 33lb 5oz, Callum was on Sycamore peg 9 and his catch was 95% roach that had been caught on the long pole shallow with caster. Paul Newell was third, Paul was on Pollawyn peg 21and caught mostly on the waggler with double red maggot and loose feeding casters but also had 4 nice bream to give him a total weight of 32lb 14oz

Section Winners

Nigel Taylor peg 20 6 points 53lb
Callum Dicks peg 9 6 points 33lb 5oz

B Section Twin Oaks

Both lakes at Twin Oaks once again fished well today proving to be a very popular section and the weights are getting progressively better each day. The F1's were showing in vast numbers on the high pegs but had moved towards the other end of the section and it was close on the high numbers with pleanty of smaller fish caught keeping the anglers busy throughout the match. The lake winner today with 65lb 10oz on peg 28 was Ian Shepherd; Ian caught F1's on groundbait and worm. Chris Martin on peg 31 was second, Chris caught at 13 meters on groundbait and maggot for a weight of 56lb 6oz. Mick Vials was third, Mick caught F1's on groundbait and maggot at 13 meters for a weight of 55lb 4oz from peg 29. The best weight on the other lake was 32lb 3oz and this came from Lee Klimczuk on peg 5, Lee caught roach at 6 meters on casters.

Section Winners

Ian Shepherd peg 28 6 points 65lb 10oz
Lee Klimczuk peg 5 6 points 32lb 3oz

C Section Pollawyn

Even though the conditions were a lot better on Pollawyn today more of the anglers struggled than in pervious days. On some of the fancied pegs the skimmers were not really showing in as many numbers so it was a tough decision to either stick to the smaller roach to build up a decent weight or hold out for the better fish. Those anglers that did well had impressive nets of mixed fish. Grant Albutt took today's lake win with 37lb 13oz; Grant was on peg 15 and caught shallow on the pole with caster. Second was Adam Wakelin, Adam was on peg 16 and caught at 16 meters shallow with casters for a weight of 32lb 3oz. Nathan Hughes weighed in with 31lb 12oz to take third, Nathan caught mostly down the edge on casters from peg 29.

Section Winners

Grant Albutt peg 15 6 points 37lb 13oz
Adam Wakelin peg 16 6 points 32lb 3oz

D Section Jennys

Jennys was on fire today living up to its reputation as one of the most popular lakes on the complex. Without the strong winds hampering the anglers with the presentation they were able to fish the long pole and this really played a key part in building up good weights of F1's. Steve Winters on peg 5 took the lake win today with an impressive 71lb 14oz, Steve caught on the deck with corn at 16 meters. Second with 68lb 14oz was Jason Le Bosquet, Jason was on peg 6 and caught at 16 meters on the deck with corn. Corn on the deck was the preferred method of the day as Steve Mayo also caught on this for a weight of 68lb 6oz to take third, Steve was on peg 16.

Section Winners

Steve Winters peg 5 6 points 71lb 14oz
Steve Mayo peg 16 6 points 68lb 6oz

E Section Trelawney

A good day also on Trelawney with the fish spread out across the lake which saw respectable weights coming from across the two sections and it being close across the board. The lake winner today on peg 10 was Andy Moors, Andy caught on the long pole with groundbait and maggot for a weight of 47lb 15oz. Dan Varney weighed in with 47lb to take second, Dan was on peg 30 and caught on maggot and groundbait long and down the edge. Third was Mark Harper, Mark caught on groundbait and maggot at 11 meters and down the edge for a weight of 40lb 9oz from peg 23.

Section Winners

Andy Moors peg 10 6 points 47lb 15oz
Dan Varney peg 30 6 points 47lb

As we go in to the final day here is how the current top ten looks

Overall Top Ten

1st Callum Dicks 22 points 129lb 2oz
2nd Paul Yates 22 points 124lb 15oz
3rd Adam Wakelin 21 points 126lb 13oz
4th Steve Winters 20 points 146lb 10oz
5th Cameron Hughes 20 points 126lb 5oz
6th Darren Cox 20 points 125lb
7th Simon Poynter 20 points 124lb 1oz
8th Simon Fry 20 points 121lb 7oz
9th Steve Mayo 19 points 179lb 15oz
10th Steve Hemmingray 19 points 160lb 1oz

So another exciting day and another set of close results.

It is still all to play for on the final day Callum has a good chance at defending his title for the second year running or will we see a new winner?

All looks set for it to become another photo finish on the festival so we will have to see what happens when that dropped result comes in to play tomorrow.
