2011 Coors Shakespeare Burton 3 Day Angling Festiv

I know it's a little belated - received this report whilst on jollies........

The first day of the festival was eagerly awaited but conditions didn’t look too promising – a low gin clear river greeted the 60 competitors.  But surprisingly the roach and dace shoals decided to feed.  First blood went to Lincs County’s Phil Foster who fished for roach  for 2 hours on the waggler and maggot before targeting two late barbel on feeder and pellet which together weighed 18lb giving him a total catch of 26lb 6oz.  Phil  just edged out team mate Andy Dixon with a great 24lb 12oz of roach and dace from the Ferry Bridge section.  This was the start of Andy’s march to the title.  The river fished particularly well on all sections and everyone was looking forward to day 2.

Weather conditions had changed dramatically for day 2 – gale force winds and a slightly rising river cooled sport.  After winning his section the day before with 14lb of roach on waggler Simon Mottram fished a great match on long pole and hemp seed to win day 2 with 15lb 14 oz of prime roach to put in a strong challenge for the title.  Runner-up on day 2 also on the Shardlow section was Terry Trueman with 14lb 10oz of roach and dace on stick float and maggot.

The last day of the festival arrived and the anglers were apprehensive about how the river would fish considering this was the third match on the same set of pegs.  Fortunately the wind had dropped.  Hemp wizard Tony Marshall drew the barbel peg at Shardlow but ignored them and went all out for roach and put in a devastating performance to weigh in 26lb 4oz to win day 3.  Richie Reynolds was runner-up with 16lb 4oz from just below the winner.  Andy Dixon came third and claimed another section win with 15lb 2oz of roach on waggler and maggot which gave him a total of 4 points, two section wins and a second to take the overall title.  Simon Mottram could only finish third in his section on Ferry Bridge which wasn’t quite enough to take the title but gave him the overall runner-up place.

A big thank you to all our sponsors – Coors Brewery, Shakespeare, Wovencrest and Bait-tech for supplying fabulous prizes for the event.  Also thank you to all the helpers – section stewards, weighers and catering staff for looking after us.
