The World Championships for ALL categories have been taking place in Italy in what is called the World Angling Games.

Angler’s Mail has been out on the banks and also keeping up with all of the many disciplines over the past week. Without giving it all away here, we promise you there will be some fascinating stories and some great photos in the magazine soon!

Here, in an extra Angler’s Mail result service – part of our ongoing commitment to print and online match coverage – are some key results. YOU can add your comments on any of the outcomes by typing at the bottom of this post.

In a nutshell: no golds for any of the home nations’ anglers, but medals for several…



SENIOR MENS WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

ITALY were just too good on both days on their home canal venue at Ostellato in this highly prestigious event.

By being fifth after day one, and hosts Italy leading (on just 9 points), Drennan Team England’s chance of team gold quickly looked to be very, very slim…

They did well though on Saturday, and had 20 points, in a tight frame. But the strong nations of Netherlands, Hungary and Belgium were also in with a shout of the top medals.

A first day section second by Stuart Conroy and section third by five-time World Champion Alan Scotthorne meant they were England’s best prospects for an individual medal.

Team for the second day, again also included Des Shipp and Will Raison. There was a recall for 2011 Angling Trust Div.1 National Champion Steve Gardener, the longest-serving squad man, who stepped in for Sean Ashby as the squad’s lowest scorer on day one dropped out.

Wales were the next best home nation on day one in 9th, but a medal looked well beyond their talented side, and so it proved.


Jamie Masson - for a change, a Scotsman went into day two as the leader.
South Yorkshire-based bagging machine Jamie Masson was Scotland’s success story after day one – he was leading the entire World field after the best weight for any section winner, 25.580 kg. But Scotland as a team were 17th. Also after day one, Ireland were 27th out of 36 nations.

There was to be no home glory after day two, sadly. Angler’s Mail can confirm the top five as Italy (21 points), Hungary (27), Belgium (33), Holland (33), England (39) – so fifth place, the same as they started the day.

And overall individually there was more home glory with Andrea Fini topping a trio of perfect scores on weight, totalling 32.620 kg. Next was Peter Mikovics (Hungary) then Italian Ferruccio Gabba.

For England fans, we can confirm Stuart Conroy, the popular North West star, was the top performer in tenth with 5 points, the same as Alan Scotthorne in 11th. Des Shipp was 25th overall, Will Raison 32nd – these were the four to fish both days.

Notables in other home nations were Jamie Masson (Scotland) whose day one heroics were not matched on day two, ending 56th. The Scots were 15th.

Welshman Nigel Evans was 33rd as his side finished 12th.

Ireland, who have been rocked by political issues in recent times, finished 27th. Their highest finishing man being David Burleigh in 95th individual spot out of 202 anglers.

FEEDER WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

Gold for Russia on 54 points, followed by Ukraine 58, Netherlands 58, Slovakia 60, England finishing in fifth with 79 out of 16 nations in this new teams of five event. No other home nations took part.


Ringer - silver
But Angler’s Mail can report a silver individually for England’s Steve Ringer, who recently signed for Daiwa back in the UK, with 3 points (section second then section win) and 13.388 kg overall. Gold went to Olekssi Strashnyi (Ukraine) with a perfect score of 2 points (also having the best aggregate weight of 19.825 kg).

Preston Innovations-sponsored England’s other anglers were skipper Tom Pickering (13th), Steve Hemingrey (47th), Darren Cox (63rd). Mick Vials and Dean Barlow were the other two England men, fishing one day each.

LADIES WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

Angler’s Mail is delighted to report a team bronze for England here for the girls, and almost silver after tieing with Germany on 65 points but being ousted on weight (17.530 kg to the Germans’ 33.205). Hosts Italy, who are having a predictably awesome Games overall, took gold with 53 points. 17 nations fished.

No individual medals to report for England, the only home nation fishing, as Ingeborg Audenaerd of the Netherlands took gold with a perfect two section wins. England performances were: Wendy Locker (9th), Emma Pickering (15th), Helen Dagnall (22nd), Sam Sim (29th) and Julie Abbott (43rd).

DISABLED WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

Ten nations lined up and England finished their two days halfway down in fifth, so no medals. But Angler’s Mail is pleased to reveal that there was a silver here to celebrate as Andrew Lakey was one of three competitors tied on a perfect two points. He missed the gold by weight (13.090 kg and so behind Czech angler Ota Petracek on 15.310).

England’s other anglers were: Alan Chadbone (15th), Mark Eves (18th) and John Dickens (33rd).

VETERANS WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

England’s old boys, managed by Dick Clegg, came sixth with 47 points, well behind the winners..who else.. Italy (19 points). Belgium then France completed the frame and there were no individual medals for England to report. No other home teams fished and 11 sides lined the banks.

Top man for England was Terry Lancaster who started brilliantly with a section win but was halfway down his section on day two so finished seventh. Franco Andreatta was a perfect-score gold medal champ here.

UNDER 22s WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

Gold for France on 35 points, followed by Poland on 39 and England finishing with bronze medals for their third-placed 48-point score over two days in this 18-team event. No other home nations competed.

No individual medals for England, with the gold won by Frenchman Antoine Gavazzi. Best placed English angler was Matthew Derry in 13th, with Cameron Hughes 17th, James Dent 20th, Matt Godfrey 21st.

UNDER 18s WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

Angler’s Mail can confirm a super silver for England on 25 points, behind hosts Italy on 23 in this 17-team event. No other home nations competed.

Individual bronze too for England, with Alex Clements on 3 points. He was pipped on weight (39.280 to 39.560) to silver which went to Italian Francesco Campani, and gold to the perfect two section wins by Milan Nenadovic.

England’s Jake Dye was 6th, Conor Barlow 7th, Ryan Watson 17th.

England did not compete in the junior under 14 event, won easily by the hosts Italy.

CARP FISHING WORLD CHAMPS SUMMARY

England didn’t gain the gold they hankered after but Angler’s Mail can confirm they will come home with silver, behind the undisputed No.1 team again, South Africa. 22 nations competed and no other home nations were involved. Hosts Italy will surely be gutted in this one, finishing 16th!
