Cashmores Match 9 2011 - Kingstanding Pools
CHAPTER 1
As I tootled up the A38 to this venue with new travelling companion for the day Bullah, it was with some trepidation and a little anxiety as to whether this match would actually go ahead, despite reassurances I’d been given. I hadn’t mentioned owt to anyone else, but I was still a tad concerned…….
In the preceding months I had been really looking forward to it following positive comments from a few anglers. A mixed fishery, with some carp, but supposedly loads of silvers. Matches in the winter produced 15lb nets of silvers, so should be a few tugs for all, or so I thought - but
Rewind back 4 days……….
I received a telephone call from the member who’d suggested the venue and who had made the booking on behalf of the club
Apparently he’d received a call the night before from another member in which ‘concern was expressed’ - well that’s one way of putting it - that it was unfishable because of the amount of weed in the pegs and we wouldn’t fit on.
The ‘booking’ member, so concerned at this ‘news’ had called the secretary of the host club who wasn’t aware of an issue, so had dropped things at work and had drove up that morning to see the pool for himself.
Hence the call to me from the bank………..’yep there’s some lilies, but nothing I can see being a problem’
So on that journey up the A38 I’m mulling over what I’m actually gunna be greeted with…………..
TBC when I've uploaded the pictures........

Almost worth waiting for TK
Cashmores Match 9 2011 - Kingstanding Pools
CHAPTER 2 and the rest
On arrival at the fishery car park I was soon unloaded and set off on the ‘hike’ to our pool for the day, furthermost of the three pools there. What struck me straight away was that BMAC the controlling club had spent quite a few bob on laying paths around the pools and it looked a very pleasant and well maintained fishery.
I had a wander round the one side - what problem? I couldn’t see any issues. What was more, there were plenty of small silvers topping all over the pool.
Well here is a picture or two looking north up the pool - a bit of a jaunt to those ‘favoured’ pegs at the far end. I’d have quite happily dropped into the pegs down this end - no walk and loads of bits all over the place.
Big Baz had already pegged out by my arrival. He’d put 22 in because with confirmed casualties we had a max of 23, but likely a few more undeclared casualties. To be honest it just aint fair on the ‘pegger outers’ match after match who have to guess how many pegs to put in - just because members cant be ‘bothered’ to make one tel call if they cant make it or have no intention of making it…………..
Just think if the roles were reversed - what would be said if a members peg was sold to a visitor, or insufficient pegs put in, because the pegger outers didnt think a member was gunna turn up ::) Yep there would be fun and games then wouldnt there,,,,,,
Anyway, 9am draw time soon came around. Apart from Cotti who had called me 10 minutes earlier to inform he was gunna be late as he negotiated some diversions, the turnout was reminiscent to a moving water match as several undeclared casualties failed to materialise. :(
That draw bag was a big un this week. . Well I say draw bag - KOD had left the discs in the car, so to save walking back, dropped our normal wooden pegs into his stink bag
As I scribbled numbers down and all had drawn, there were 3 pegs left over for my ‘last’ dip in the stink bag…………………
Aggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I was on 11 - on that supposed ‘cock’ but featureless far bank in the distance.
Finally arriving at peg 11 I debated whether to get the wag out to supplement the pole - but as time was marching on, elected for just the pole. If I was ‘struggling’ I could always knock it up mid match, couldn’t I ::)
Plumbing up it was quite shallow - a couple of foot up to 9 mtrs where there was a drop off to 3ft odd, and it went away to about 5.5ft at 12 mtrs, this with probably a foot off what I suspected as ‘normal’ water levels. Listening to others on other banks I heard 3 and 4 ft mentioned…….on reflection as the day progressed our deeper water - particularly in winter - may have accounted for that ‘cock pegs’ tag.
The view from ‘our end’- MrV hiding behind a bush and Abuman in the distance
Fatty Kendall on the rh bank
And again
Whilst to my right were Zorro, Yamo and Big Geoff
The off and 3 lines fed. Straight away others were into fish - particularly Fatty Kendall who had a gud first hour
Zorro and Yamo to my right picked up a couple of early skimmers, whilst I waited for them to find my offerings.
When they did arrive, some time later I picked two up half pounders and then nowt. So I decided to put a bit more GB in…………..did it ‘kill it’………..or was it already dead? Who knows………
For the next 4 hours I scratted here, there and back to here……….whilst I could see lacky coming out of the odd pole and MrV was picking up skimmers with increasing frequency late on on the feeder
Weed? Lilly pads? Wished I’d got some as a fish holding feature……………. ::)
With 10 mins to go with nowt to show for the last hour or so I decided to call it a day as dark clouds loomed over the back of us.
I’d just managed to put away 5 pole rigs and the pole itself, called time and low and behold it dumped a shower on us for 10 mins……………just to dampen us off as the sun came out again when all was suitably wet
I decided to hump my tackle down in 3 trips as Bullah and KOD on the scales made there way round the pool ……………..taking of scales, here’s the result
PEG
1 KOD 1.2.0
2 BULLAH 2.8.0
3
4
5 HAHA 29.12.0
6 FATTY KENDALL 10.6.0
7
8 BIG GEOFF DNW (tipped back)
9 YAMO 6.8.0
10 ZORRO 2.14.0
11 TK 3.10.0
12
13 COTTI 1.4.0
14 MR V 11.14.0
15 MANCUB DNW (tipped back)
16 ABUMAN 3.0.0
17
18
19
20 BIG BAZ 7.10.0
21 BRAMBLES 0.10.0
22 DEAD PEG 0.5.0
All in all a very pleasant fishery - shame the fish moved into mode - but I’d certainly give it another go…………
And quite ironical isn’t it, the instigator of those initial weed concerns turning out to be victor on the day - must have been using pop up baits…….. ::)
