CHAPTER ONE

With the glorious 16th come and gone, it was now time for the Cashmores crack running line merchants Image to grace the banks of the River Avon at Fladbury.

The venue, albeit it we were on the opposite bank controlled by Girling AC, was the scene of my debut appearance for Cashmores all those years back in the early nineties. So it was all a bit of a nostalgia trip. Image

On the way down the M5 with Heinzer I had a call from Bullah who was obviously dead keen as it was only about 7.45am and he was already at the venue :o

This was followed by a text from him at 7.53am which read ‘Fish topping, pegs fine, Image just found a dead chub’.

Sounded good - apart from that poor rub a dub :( - and that news wet my appetite for the match more Image ……..was the Avon, which can be so cruel at times and a tough nut to crack, going to cough up some decent weights for us Image Image Image

Just before we pulled up at the venue I caught a glimpse of Bullah and KOD in the field, obviously pegging out - thanks guys. Image The cock pegs were ‘up’ by the weir, but I didn’t fancy a walk so I’d happily settle for a not so cock peg for the day. Image

Talking of pegs, Phil B, after his latest bucolic excursion had got his eyes on the downstream ‘cock’ peg about 20 yards from where we gathered to do the draw. :D Phil gesticulating to me, on more than one occasion, that he wanted to be there. I ‘promised’ him the peg Image …………….in fact after the match, someone who wasn’t aware of this ‘arrangement’ quipped that he’d already got his gear on that platform before we’d done the draw Image

TBC..........

Coming up..........

Who ends up on those cock pegs? Image
Who hammers the chub on one of those cock pegs Image
Black hydro at full stretch Image
How bigs that eel? :o
Who's smashed up Image
Who does a Bill Yards impersonation Image and leaves 3 pole floats up a tree Image

All this and more in the following exciting chapters

Chapter 2

Our peg 1 was the upstream end at the bottom of the weir.

Jubilee bridge in the distance

Image

Pegs 1-5 were most favoured, along with Phil B’s peg 17 just above the bridge. I heard talk of a shoal of chub with some bream  visible under the bridge, so Phil was a real contender today.  Image

Not  a brilliant turnout again today for a variety of reasons but at least there was one more than on the last pool match and with 17 pegs in there was going to be a couple of spare pegs going free.

Two golden pegs were drawn no’s 7 & 15. As the draw went ahead and I scribbled down the draw, I was relieved to see the low favoured numbers go  Image  but not so chuffed to draw peg 8.  :(

Looking at the board I noticed that golden peg 7 hadn’t been drawn, so with that moving up to the next drawn number, peg 8, I’d got a GP by default.  Image

Only one problem, I’d had a run down of the pegs by one of the host clubs officers and my peg - which turned out to be perm 10 - didn’t feature in the reckoning.  Image  So reality set in, no chance of a win today,   :'(  just needed to get my head down and see if I could scrape through knock out as today was the qtr final  - 8 left in it with 4 to go through…………. Image

Must say, on arrival at 8 I was pleased with the state of the pegs, the host club had done a grand job with them with all being ‘stepped down’, so you didn’t need to be a mountain goat.  Image  Image

What was also pleasing, as Bullah had indicated in his text,  there were small fish topping all over the river -  Image Image Image  not cormorant ravaged as had been suggested to me.

However the gods weren’t letting us have it all our own way……………there was a stinking downstreamer - well at least where I was - and it was also blowing slightly into my face.  Image

For company below me on peg 9 was Juan Chub, making his 2011 Cashmores debut - all that work and no play………………...  with dad Geoff in tow, threatening to do the David Baileys for us  - ps ta Geoff  Image

Originally it looked like Juan Chub had some ‘mid river’ stick ups in his peg, but on closer inspection from my peg upstream I could concur with him that they were in fact parts of a branch lodged in his peg. But like a true stalwart, he declined the opportunity to move upstream to a vacant peg.

Bullah was next to approach me and sort a ‘move’ to another peg. ‘Fine’ I hadn’t any problem with that, after all it’s just friendly club fishing…………

Bullah decided to drop in above me on peg 7 - not sure whether he thought he was now in with a chance of winning the 'original' golden peg  Image ……………so I was now hemmed in by two river cracks…………..was I up against it or what  Image

With that downstream wind, float control was always going to be an issue - so the old Shimano Diaflashes bought along for the wag and stick stopped in the holdall as I decided to fish 12 mtrs of pole to the centre of the river where fish were topping and also set two whips up……….but care was going to be needed as I was impeded both left and right by overhead trees…… Image
