Does anyone ever remember the annual open match run on the River Mease, near Newport.

I think I fished two of them; it would be easier to get tickets for a Michael Jackson concert today than it was for them Image

They used to cram around 100-pegs on this tiny river, - the walks were horrific. Massive weights used to win, generally the first three were in a line somewhere and had bream. Most sections were blank, yet they never, ever advertised this match. Any crappity smack remember them, its going back a bit, in my junior days?

Used to fish on a River Mease in Measham Leic's. That was small and had Chub and Roach in it. You had to sit at an angle to the river because it wasn't that wide. They ran opens, good matches too.

Not the same river though ??

No not the Measham one, about the same size though and shallower, flow was slower as well.

TK, I said Newport because it was actually at Forton, in between Gnosall and Newport. We used to draw at a put on the Eccleshall Road off the A41.
The river actually went through Aquelate Mere, I have fished that as well. You can just about see this mere off the A518 from Gnosall to Newport. Big piece of water but as shallow as crappity smack; used to be fantastic for bream Image Image Image

Remember going there eel fishing with feeder and worm in the closed season. Had a bream 5-15 first chuck then four more; never had an eel :-X :-X :-X

Just checked this one out, - it is spelt Meese and does run past Newport towards the River Tern. I am sure Whitmore Reans had a length of it yonks back just past Newport.

Anyway check out Serck Audco Angling Club website, they have two stretches of this river. I have fished on the other side of the bridge in the picture. Loads of people thought they had two pound roach from there but they did have a bit of bream in them, although they looked like true roach. It was an amazing bit ot of river, at times you could catch over 50 lb of these 'roach' sometimes not a bite. I had one fish there once 4 lb 14 oz, looked like a pure roach to me but it was a hybrid. I remember it produced a big pike of around 30 lb one year.
The fish used to migrate from the mere and if you caught it right it was bingo time, 20 swims in a row would bag up. Image Image Image
