Cashmores match 3 2011..........a commie convert?
Cashmores match 3 2011..........a commie convert?
Well that's the title sorted out
Just need the results off KOD now

Cashmores match 3 2011..........a commie convert?
Match 3 saw the Cashmores Crew returning for a 3rd visit to a venue originally described as ‘Stunning Thorpe’ by MrV back in 2009 - Thorpe Manor.
A nice mixed fishery with pleasant riparian owners who are a pleasure to do ‘business’ with.
Sadly the fixture attracted some criticism ::) that it was ‘too early’………….but what fixture is spot on for an April match Answers on a postcard please………
Perhaps, on reflection, when we moved following the close season abolition from a 12 match fixture list comprised then of 4 canal, 4 river and 4 pools I shouldn’t have added 3 pool matches making 7 but a couple of cuts instead...........or a 5/5/5 split..........
In fact, and for the record, following earlier member’s requests for a revisit to Thorpe, I had tried to book the venue on a later date in the Cashmores 2011 schedule, but the venue couldn’t accommodate us on those ‘free’ dates in our calendar.
So, thinking that Thorpe had a lot more to offer, even if the crap hadn’t yet woken from their winter slumbers, April it was………….
Anyway, pulling into the car park with Heinzer there was a fair contingent already gathered. In fact we had a healthy turnout of 28
Yamo pegged out and 8…..yep 8, short walk pegs went into the bag for the walking wounded. So pegs 9 & 10 were elected as ‘scales pegs’.
When I finally dipped into the bag, yep you’ve guessed it, peg 9 stuck to my donnie. Ironically KOD drew the other short straw and finished on 10……….
Peg 9 was 3 pegs off the most north eastern corner of the pool………….not really where I wanted to draw as I’d set up and bought along that Shakey pellet waggler rod I’d purchased, intending giving it a first trial outing on the wag and mag/corn (as pellet was banned)
The rod never came out of the case as a) I didn’t want to inadvertently impose upon Abuman, Bullah and Dead Peg directly opposite me only a short chuck across and b) there was a bit of a stinker side wind
But every cloud has a silver lining, because on the plus side, I was in good company today with the aforementioned characters, plus with Terry Turnip also to my left on last walking wounded peg 8, KOD to my right and Cotti right in the corner, a fair bit of banter was probably likely today.
The start was delayed 15mins……………must have been to allow for those on the flyers, namely the high 20s, to get to their pegs and set up
The off. GB and corn fed on a ‘long’ line, punch with a bit of corn on a slightly shorter line, corn to a shallow margin to my right and a flick of the top3 with mag……………
Well for the first couple of hours it was gonks and small roach for all of us in that end of the pool, with the exception of Abuman who snared a crucian or two.
Gonks on the mag, gonks on the corn………a gonk a chuck, ME would have loved it.
But with a couple of hours left, with nobody in the corner owning up to more than a couple of lb of bits, Dead Peg changed the course of the match with one fell swoop…………..
He slung out the feeder ( I think it was, but will stand corrected) and within a couple of minutes his rod was arched over…………..and the quarry was safely netted.
A second chuck by Dead Peg and minutes later a repeat show. Within seconds of that, all around me feeders and bombs were hitting the water.
And what was worse, I ended up with neck strain as I proceeded to watch KOD, Terry Turnip, Brambles and Tommy Cooper just further round all regularly picking up netters over that last hour and half. Even Cotti in the corner started putting some crap together………
I was being battered ………….absolutely annihilated, as a member quipped as I looked round to see him playing fish no 5 ‘You’ve got to catch a few gonks to catch up with these’
Despite ‘trying new things’ - but not a tip rod - only those gonks, plus 2 bonus 6 oz skimmers and a 4oz roach would play ball, despite best endeavours.
Heinzer finally blew up, and having packed up, I set off with KOD to end peg 28 to start the weight in…………
The benchmark was set early by MrV with what looked like a net of barbel plus bonus skimmers…………and of course, those gonks.
As we made our way round the pool it became apparent that no one had ‘walked it’, but it was tight with loads of ‘similar’ figure nets………….and here’s the tale of the scales

Cashmores match 3 2011..........a commie convert?
You must be having a giraffe
I knew I had drawn a resonable area after last years match, but I had a sneaky feeling the Crap wouldn't play ball on the day. With that in mind, I had also taken bait more relevant to silvers ....4 pints maggots and a tin of sweetcorn, with a little bit of choppy.
Plumbed up and found an area as big as a dustbin lid that was about 6" deeper than everywhere else, so that would be the main area, about 8 mtrs out. Fed this with 2 walnut size balls of gb and dead maggot. Had a foot of water either side on the inside, but knew from last year that the fish were not afraid to come into these areas, so fed corn and a bit of gb regularly in those areas.
Had 5 chucks on a feeder to the aerator, resulting in 1 nipped maggot :(
Pole out to 8 mtrs, and gonk after gonk on maggot Piece of corn on, and a 1lb crap Next put in with corn, a 6oz skimmer, followed by more gonks, even on the corn :( After 90 minutes of this, it was decision time Decided to loose feed maggot over the top and fish shallow Roach after roach followed, all about 2 oz, but then the odd skimmer, and a bonus 12oz chub. Kept going at this til about an hour from the end when Big Geoff next door had a few barbel on the worm, so cuppd some choppie in at 6 mtrs to the left, and went back on the maggot for 10 mins. 1st put in on the worm, barbel, 2nd put in skimmer, after that nothing :( Rotated between worm and maggot shallow til the end and finished up with 3 barbel, 1 tench and 1 more skimmer on the choppie, plus loads more small roach on the maggot.
Thoroughly enjoyed the match at a great venue, and to echo the thoughts of our illustrious Match Sec, one of the tightest score sheets I have seen for a long time.
TK, can you book it again next April and October

Ta for the report MrV and well done for 'doing the bizz' - your brown envelope awaits you next match in my box
Just one thing
You must have missed a point I made in my report
Some member comments inform me April is obviously too early for the venue..........
So heeding these comments, I've spent the day on the phone rearranging the matches already booked for 2012, and stretched the Cashmores schedule out a bit............in the process sandwiching a few 'later' matches inbetween the Grueller series.......
Surprisingly I then managed book Thorpe for 8th Dec 2012 - hope that's later enough in the season for us

How about 5 x canals, 5 x rivers and 5 x Thorpe?? Would they give us a discount ??
Cashmores match 3 2011..........a commie convert?
The unusual thing MrV - and I'm being deadly serious here and not having a 'bit of banter' or having a wind up here now - whenever I ask for suggestions - like I've done elsewhere on the forum - I do get emails etc from members (must be too shy to post on here) suggesting venues, but they typically tend to state 'so and so place in July or Aug'..............I cant recollect any emails ever suggesting pool venues in April & May.
As Ive said before if there was 15 weeks across these months and we fished every week I could accomodate all of these requests.......

Certainly has an interesting ring to it..............a schedule to certainly ponder over
Discounted the 5 all on Thorpe though - variety is the spice of life as far as I'm concerned and there's a fair few 'pool' venues we've never set foot on to go at - including two private country estates that I've been in discussions with (but you aint going there without me next May - so may be 2013 now - unless I stick a TK knock up on em)

Used to fish the matches on the Staffs Worcs on the A5/Penkridge back in the 80's Mugger
They were 80 - 100 to the lb (or sometimes smaller) on that cut
250+ would get you 2lb 4oz - 2lb 10oz, putting you in with a chance of a section winning weight

As you say TK, it's what you get used to.
I just had a look through my blog for last year and I only fished 21 matches and weighed in a total of 1419½lbs.
That averages out at just over 67½lbs a match, which just goes to show how prolific the fisheries are down this way.

I know we've had this discussion before on this forum but what really 'narks' me - the club man is certainly seems to be the 2nd rate citizen compared to the 'open' angler at a lot of venues 'up here'
