Match 3 saw the Cashmores Crew returning for a 3rd visit to a venue originally described as ‘Stunning Thorpe’ by MrV back in 2009 - Thorpe Manor.
A nice mixed fishery with pleasant riparian owners who are a pleasure to do ‘business’ with.
Sadly the fixture attracted some criticism ::) that it was ‘too early’………….but what fixture is spot on for an April match
Answers on a postcard please………
Perhaps, on reflection, when we moved following the close season abolition from a 12 match fixture list comprised then of 4 canal, 4 river and 4 pools I shouldn’t have added 3 pool matches making 7 but a couple of cuts instead...........or a 5/5/5 split..........
In fact, and for the record, following earlier member’s requests for a revisit to Thorpe, I had tried to book the venue on a later date in the Cashmores 2011 schedule, but the venue couldn’t accommodate us on those ‘free’ dates in our calendar.
So, thinking that Thorpe had a lot more to offer, even if the crap hadn’t yet woken from their winter slumbers, April it was………….
Anyway, pulling into the car park with Heinzer there was a fair contingent already gathered. In fact we had a healthy turnout of 28
Yamo pegged out and 8…..yep 8, short walk pegs went into the bag for the walking wounded.
So pegs 9 & 10 were elected as ‘scales pegs’.
When I finally dipped into the bag, yep you’ve guessed it, peg 9 stuck to my donnie.
Ironically KOD drew the other short straw and finished on 10……….
Peg 9 was 3 pegs off the most north eastern corner of the pool………….not really where I wanted to draw as I’d set up and bought along that Shakey pellet waggler rod I’d purchased, intending giving it a first trial outing on the wag and mag/corn (as pellet was banned)
The rod never came out of the case as a) I didn’t want to inadvertently impose upon Abuman, Bullah and Dead Peg directly opposite me only a short chuck across and b) there was a bit of a stinker side wind
But every cloud has a silver lining,
because on the plus side, I was in good company today with the aforementioned characters, plus with Terry Turnip also to my left on last walking wounded peg 8, KOD to my right and Cotti right in the corner, a fair bit of banter was probably likely today.
The start was delayed 15mins……………must have been to allow for those on the flyers, namely the high 20s, to get to their pegs and set up
The off. GB and corn fed on a ‘long’ line, punch with a bit of corn on a slightly shorter line, corn to a shallow margin to my right and a flick of the top3 with mag……………
Well for the first couple of hours it was gonks and small roach for all of us in that end of the pool, with the exception of Abuman who snared a crucian or two.
Gonks on the mag, gonks on the corn………a gonk a chuck, ME would have loved it.
But with a couple of hours left, with nobody in the corner owning up to more than a couple of lb of bits, Dead Peg changed the course of the match with one fell swoop…………..
He slung out the feeder ( I think it was, but will stand corrected) and within a couple of minutes his rod was arched over…………..and the quarry was safely netted.
A second chuck by Dead Peg and minutes later a repeat show.
Within seconds of that, all around me feeders and bombs were hitting the water.
And what was worse, I ended up with neck strain as I proceeded to watch KOD, Terry Turnip, Brambles and Tommy Cooper just further round all regularly picking up netters over that last hour and half. Even Cotti in the corner started putting some crap together………
I was being battered
………….absolutely annihilated,
as a member quipped as I looked round to see him playing fish no 5 ‘You’ve got to catch a few gonks to catch up with these’
Despite ‘trying new things’ - but not a tip rod - only those gonks, plus 2 bonus 6 oz skimmers and a 4oz roach would play ball, despite best endeavours.
Heinzer finally blew up, and having packed up, I set off with KOD to end peg 28 to start the weight in…………
The benchmark was set early by MrV with what looked like a net of barbel plus bonus skimmers…………and of course, those gonks.
As we made our way round the pool it became apparent that no one had ‘walked it’, but it was tight with loads of ‘similar’ figure nets………….and here’s the tale of the scales

As far as I’m concerned - but a minority may disagree vehemently - that must rank as one of the ‘fairest’ commie matches the club has seen
……………no runaway 60lb or 80lb winner with the fish shoaled up in a peg and the majority of the field struggling.
To me it was an even, ‘fair’ and ‘close’ match with 21 double figure nets.
What do you reckon?
