Grueller Match 7 - long awaited results

Unread post by TK »

Well well well well……………..

14 foolish hardy gruellerites turned up for this latest event. Only missing was a 90% chance of turnup – Larry Teepot. Hope he aint still driving round Rugeley after SS mailed him directions on Fri night. Image

After deciding on 3 sections – 1 to 4, 6 to 10 and 11 to 16 excluding BDM’s beloved peg 13 the draw took place. Strangely, first to go were all the pegs middle difficult section. Then a whoop of delight as SS had obviously drawn peg 1 but was trying to keep it secret. Pegs came and went until the last 2 in the bag – 16 & 4.

Well knowing that 4 couldn’t probably compete under normal circumstances with 1 or 2 and having had a decent match on 16 last time out, BDM obviously wanted the later.

MrV dipped and ended on 16 whilst BDM trooped rather dejectedly and still the worse for wear off to 4.

One of those days or what???????

BDM knew that he was likely to pick a pound or two off the far side brambles but needed to try to force something else into feeding into the peg.

So on the off, a couple of cups of punch down the track, remembering that late on in the day Gerry off peg 5 had picked up a couple of roach off this line last time out.

Some very wetted GB went over at the bottom of the shelf about a metre prom the brambles. Big mag and caster firtled across to the brambles with the intent of getting those rub a dubs into a feeding frenzy for the last hour.

2 inside swims for whatever swam for the first part of the match, hopefully including a chublet or two.

Well there was only a gudgeon or two swimming on those inside lines. :'(
News came that SS and Heinzer were catching…………..to be expected. The Wedge on 3 had snared a small chub, whilst to BDM’s right, big Geoff was still dry fishing hard across.

A quick look across at the bottom of the shelf………..another couple of gudgeon. :'(

Then BDM realised no landing net…….!!!! Not being with it, he’d forgot to set the thing up. Was this an omen? Image Image Image

Back over, the no 8 lackie shot out and after a brief tussle a 4 oz a rub a dub. A few minutes later, with Sprucey now coaching BDM, the lackie shot out again. He’s mine, thought BDM shipping back……………..but no…………the b*gger woke up and 8 foot of lackie was into the brambles. >:(

The Wedge was fairing worse………..he’d been smashed up a few times. Image
On with beastie tackle……….and……………no bites for him.

Nearing half way through. A look on the track line with punch. First put in a bite. A gudgeon. Second put in a bite. Another gudgeon. Third put in…….you get the idea. :-/

Sodd it…………fill the track in with GB and squatt for those breamies and a quick stretch of the legs and a bit of fresh air.

SS and Heinzer owned up to having a few as expected. The middle section was fishing hard, but Welder had had a few bits, but rued the fact that he’d only bought half a tournie pro with him, needing an extra section or two to go alongside the bush.

Cotti on a decent roach peg, no 11, was struggling. No sign of the resident roach there, only a dozen gudgeon. The same applied to the others in the section, but MrV had got about 8oz in the net and was starting to get a few bites from bits other than gudgeon.

Well not a lot happened next for BDM. A couple of extra gudgeon. At one stage BDM must have dozed off for a minute cuss the top 3 section used on the inside line was down the bank and floating away. 10 mins to go and the get out of jail fish from off the feet put in an appearance and promptly smashed 2.10 straight through. Image

The Wedge snared a few more, but was admitting to have lost the battle 14 to 5. Image

Thank god…….the whistle. Just packed up and the scales go off and we are greeted by a hail storm……just what you want!

First to weigh, MrV on 16. Looks of disbelief as he pulls out his net. Bl**dy hell. BDM had set a new benchmark for that peg last time out and had jokingly said I did 6 off that last time, I expecting to see 12lb today off it.

Well not quite the 12, but an amazing 11.8.0. Image Image Image

So who want’s peg1 and who wants 16 next time out on here???? Mr V has well and truly re written the form book

Here’s the results

PEG
1 SIMPLE SIMON 3.7.1
2 HEINZER 3.7.5 Section winner
3 THE WEDGE 2.15.6
4 BDM 0.8.4

6 GEOFF C 1.1.4
7 SHARK DRY
8 BALL IT IN DRY
9 DRY NET 1.4.0
10 WELDER 2.15.13 Section winner

11 COTTI 0.14.7
12 ZORRO 0.12.0
14 YAMO 1.7.7
15 HAHA 0.14.2
16 MR V 11.8.0 Section winner

Well done MrV, Welder and Heinzer.

Hard luck those who put in 100% effort - the BDM daint and got what he deserved. And fished, if you can call it that, like a pratt.

Well that’s the first disaster and match to forget for the BDM in 2008

It can’t get any worse…………can it?

Nice Report TK. Always worth waiting for to see how you fared  :'(
I must admit, I fancied the peg 16, after having your info from the last match, and hearing about the "little Roach and bottle top skimmers"
I set up a 3mtr whip for the gudgeon, and spent 10 minutes or so plumbing around further out. Found a few slightly deeper bits, and set my stall out to fish these with light rigs.
At the off, 1 golf ball of g/b and squatt at 3 meters, 3 golf balls of g/b squatt and hemp at 11 meters straight out in front. A few pouches of hemp and caster to the bushes either side, and a few loose fed maggots "behind me" to the left. (if you see the peg you will know what I mean!!)   Image
For the first hour, couldnt get in quick enough on the whip, a gudgeon a chuck, and 50-60 of em in the first hour for about 12oz.
Tried each of the other lines over the next 10 mins. A few gudgeon straight out and zilch of the bushes  :'(
Back on the gobies for half an hour. Try bushes again....zilch. 10 meters, a few gobies. TK's 6lb best off this peg was looking safe right now  Image
With an hour and a bit to go, I decided to "blast" a few pouches of squatt at the bushes, in the hope of provoking a bite!!. 10 minutes later, I had a 4oz skimmer off the bush to the right, then a couple of gobies.
Over to the left bush, a 3oz roach, then nothing. Back to the bush on the right with double squatt on the hook, float buries and the 4s elastic begins to look inadequate. Ah well, hang on and hope. Blow me the fish sets off upstream towards the pumphouse...deep joy. 5 mins later, a pound chub in the net  Image
Changed rigs, onto 8's laccy and the proper chub rig, just as Sprucey arrives asking what I had. tell him just had my first chub.
He wanders off back towards peg 1, but I have added 2 more chub to my net before he got there, both on double maggot. it was solid on both bushes, and behind me!  Image
Last half hour was a chub a bung, not big, but the last one went a pound plus, and they preferred the caster to the maggot.  :D
I think the fish switched on because they pumped twice during the match, although it was not hot water, it put a flow on the channel, which I believe pushed the fish down to me.  Image

Great report both of you and a well deserved win Paul Image

I was very flustered on peg 1 and having different people telling you different things always plays havoc with your head. :-[
I just setup to fish right in front of me to the boom and a inside line for my mate mr carp, who never showed up >:(
I started on the punch and was having a gudgeon a chuck then a nice roach but then it died.
I fed some maggots and caster and a bit of hemp and stuck a single maggot on the hook, float goes under and the lakky comes flying out. My first chub. These little buggers go like stink :D
I was feeding about 8 maggots every other fish. I had a perch and 2 more chub and then peg 1 and 2 switched off totally. It was about when the water started pumping round. Me and Heinzer couldn't buy a bite. Image
In the last hour i upped the feed and was only feeding maggot now. I also switched to double red maggot. The float sailed away first drop and the lakky was all the way out. Big chub on but it wasn't to be, the hook pulled.
Now at this point I should have changed my lakky to black hydro but been the clown I am I didnt :-/ As a result I lost 3 more big fish.
Getting 4 drammed by heinzer was a nice :D

Great day out again as always. I don't think pegs 1 and 2 fished as they normally would but that's just fishing for you. Would be boring if it was the same all the time. Was nice to see a unexpected peg win for a change...... Image

ill add my report

drawing peg 14 next to haha armed with a TOY MOLE summed up a great start to 2008 for me. Absolutely awful, 3 rigs, 2 for far bank and 1 for track(1 inch deeper than far bank)..fed choppie on far bank and punch in track, the usual pile of gudgeon bubbles appear, and sure enough haha is netting a 5oz chub. No bites at all on the riot gear, so onto 1.7 straight thru on far bank, a gudgeon followed by..........summit that not only gave me no chance but also snapped my laccy as it buried into the brambles.back on with the riot gear and not even a sniff. came onto light gear, 26 hook 1lb bottom and snared a dozen gudgeon as haha debated packing up, yes it was that bad..off goes haha for a walk and within seconds im brambletised again on light gear, clever fish these chub.back came ha ha with reports that no one was catching much. SO back onto single squat on inside line for sporadic gudgeon, 1 every 5mins or so, i felt i had 5 oz now. Ha ha then struck into his second chub slightly bigger about 7oz. So in desperation back over with ligth gear but on heavy laccy and voila 2 chub in 2 chucks totalling about 1lb 2oz. They must have been passing as one had a gob full of hemp which neither of us had used and the other had a gob full of red and white magg. Starting to understand what these chub are like now. The peg was then dead for the last 20mins..shame cos these pegs were once fantastic and now they seem devoid of fish unless there is a slight flow and the chub work their way round there for a minute or so. Ended up 1lb 7oz which wasnt a bad weight overall.Hope i draw outlet next match, god help me avoid the inlet and that curse of a mole.
