I heard something yesterday that took the biscuit!!!
We had our EMWL practice match on various drains yesterday. After the results some of the team captains/members had a general discussion on weather we should fish the last round, this coming weekend.
The basic opinions were varied as to which drains should be fished. Some people said we should break the ice on the sections we had used, as most had done today, some said we should find various sections that were ice free!!!! One lad said lets do a river……… Admitted, all were sensible.
One chap then said, “oh no we shouldn’t fish if we have to break the ice as some anglers are too old to break the ice” ????????
One chap then spouted out “ well we can’t fish ..xxxxxxx drain as the banks could be dangerous under ” HEALTH AND SAFTEY” we shouldn’t fish !!!!
Come on, what on EARTH has the world come too when crap like this gets into fishing?

yes you are right lee
its the organisers decision he's the one who will get blamed if something happens and believe me most will turn on him when it goes wrong

Gibbo,
I know I am fully insured through my own Club about these safety issues, (even if some crappity smack nicks the dosh). It doesn't stop organisers worrying about it though; conscience and common sense just has to be considered.
I know John and he was worried about this quite a bit. I have my League, final round, on Sunday; the highest temperature here today was -4 with -10 tonight or worse; tomorrow just as bad, even colder where we are due at Little Onn on Sunday. I am making a decision on Wednesday but at the moment it is extremely doubtful and it looks like a cancellation.
The problem is as soon as a decision like this is made match anglers, or some of them, will jump up and down but will they run the match under the same set of circumstances.
We all know what the answer is.

Tony,
No way can you draw comparisons to the way you and Spolt’s run matches………….!
Yours are very slick and professional run! Where Spolten’s matches……. Well , that’s enough of that . !
Tony, I totally accept you as organizers need to make decisions at times, however, our match has now been postponed until 9th January. … The weather then could be just as bad then as it is now, the problem we then have is that one of the teams stated that if we can’t fish the reserve match then the league will be decided on just 5 rounds !
Guess which team that gives the final decision to? “ Spoltens”
Call me cynical but I’m a bit long in the tooth to fall for crap like that!

Gibbo,
Funnily enough this Sunday I am hangling (its meant to be a pun!) my whistle up!!! This means that even if there was any spare days (I don't think there are any anyway due to other committments) someone else would have to run it.
The result will then stop as it is. Funnily enough the team that will affect most is our own, thanks to a duff match in the last round! So be it.
The point I was making was it can be a no win decision because some just wait for an excuse to open the old north and south!! Mind you ours isn't an AT and the guys do seem more than a bit sensible, we'll wait and see.
Besides the actual fishing there are parking and headquarter issues to be sorted and positive decisions have to be made quite early even if they come back and slap you in the face!!!

Really difficult for match organisers to know what to do, whatever you do you will upset people.
I do think things have changed even in my 15 years of match fishing and there have been more cancelled matches in the last year than the previous 14!! Have no problem with matches being cancelled due to road conditions, parking etc - our last round was cancelled on the Slough Arm and every peg is opposite an occupied boat so breaking ice is a no go - fair enough. What I am not happy about though is just cancelling because the canal is frozen - it's a winter league. Our match was cancelled on Sunday, but most of us still drove upto 80 miles to break the ice and all caught and next week is already cancelled with temperatures on the up! :(
Would teams be willing to sign a disclaimer at the start of the league stating that that they will take responsiility and not take action against the organising club in the event of an accident?
We are are in a similar position to Gibbo, the last two rounds of our league have been postponed and we now have a 5 match league, with the last round in January.
Gibbo, well done on Sunday - how did you catch - whip, shortline?? What sort of rig, groundbait etc? As an aside do you know if there is an open at March on Sunday?

March Xmas match Dec 19.
On the match scene, I have never cancelled a match before for weather. This Sunday is ironic really, I am almost certain I will cancel Sundays final league match.
Ice does bring other issues into it other than the actual fishing.

Cheers Tony for the March date - Sorry that you are not running matches anymore - always enjoyed the matches that you and PT run on the Shroppie & Staffs Worcs. Hope somebody is taking over the Shroppie league - looks like that has gone really well

Colly,
I don’t think breaking the ice should be an issue, we broke it last weekend so why can’t we do it this weekend???? Seems a little odd to me !
Think that’s a fair call re not breaking the ice if boats are moored up on the far bank!
What’s the situation if you can’t fish your rounds in January?????
As for my match…….just did the same as I always do on that venue. Fished between 4 and 6 mtr ,Short lined a bulk down rig , fed a kilo of sensas super canal black and gardons fine 50%-50% and loose fed pinki and hemp . as I said just standard stuff realy just a case of getting your head down. There’s loads of 1 ½ to 2 roach in the venue but you have to sort a few of the 4oz fish to do well most of the time.

Lala,
I get my readings from Shawbury (farmers forecast) which is not too far (as the crow flies ) from Little Onn. It was -14 here last night and if we are lucky it may reach the dizzy heights of -7 with much the same tonight and tomorrow.
We also had another skittering of snow in the night.
I don't believe anyone can forecast the weather more than three days ahead.
OK I accept it may go a tad 'warmer' but as I am out all day Thursday and can not be contacted my decision will be made tomorrow,Wednesday and it is looking very likely it will be cancelled.
In this League I run, a lot of anglers cover a lot of miles to get there and back and in this instance it is wise not too delay the decision which will not be reversed. There are other issues than the actual fishing here, belive me.
I sometimes wonder about your sanity Lala; do you get your temperature readings from the the thermometer next to the oven in Sid's Cafe?

LALA
me i can't stand to break ice so its simple i don't if it was a team match i would have to if it was on but i'm just not interested in fishing in these temperatures but thats my point of view i'l start my fishing after christmas but only if the weather allows it. i fish all year round now so having a bit of time off due to weather is nothing
my problem is everyone turns to me to run matches i'm sure for the amount of anglers that will turn up its easy enough for someone to do
i have 7 anglers that want to fish on sunday and thats fine but i'm not getting out of bed for a 10 pegger
i have already cancelled the pub as its only right they don't buy there stock for the breakfasts and thats another point how many are having breakfast nower days
this only my view and thoughs who want to fish and break the ice can do for me
