Dan,
I understand your concern regarding the teams methods, it's just my spin on this venue. You have 2 days practice so give all methods a try.
A valid point in my view is that while many other methods have come to the fore in recent years, canal fishing apart from boats has changed very little, they are still caught in the same places relatively on the same baits !!!!!!!
Here's the rest of the info ;
Down the track. This is for odd big roach.
Top 3, 4/5 elastic.
Like Pete has said its white maggot. I put a full pot of hemp spread out at approx. 1 o'clock in the deepest part of the canal, approx 5/7 metres out depending on the width. A 2 foot area is good, after this just trickle a few white maggots every 5 mins, I would not look at this for maybe 2hrs, the best time could be mid match or when there is a lull in the boat traffic (If they stop for dinner).
Rig for this is a pole stick 0.4 gram approx. Bulk with three droppers, fish about 6inch overdepth as a guide.
Over rigs.
The rigs that Dodge mentioned are spot on.
The important part is where you fish and feed.
Like Pete said the chub pegs will look after themselves but a word of warning keep your options open on these pegs as not all the chub pegs will produce !!!!!
When fishing over at this time of year the best lines are up the shelf, even better if you have two shelfs so you have a flat bit ! and tight over.
My deep line will be 2 and a half feet to 3 feet depending on the shelfs but I will try and avoid steep drop offs. This could be 9 to 12m depending on the width.
My furthest line will be in 1 foot of water, the tighter over the better.
The deep line will be fed straight in front of me with 3 balls of groundbait packed with squatt. I also like to put a half cup of hemp in aswell. Don't form them too tight, as they need to break up quickly.
I would feed this line all day and none stop !. 10 to 15 squatts every minute.
I will try and have two lines over, one with a small pot of hemp and the other with a ball of groundbait again packed with squatt.
This gives me options of trying hemp or turning it into another squatt line.
This tight over line might seem very shallow but trust me there will be a good part of the match where it will be the ONLY place to catch.
So there it is, a good tip is when feeding your deep line with squatt make sure you over spray to feed your far line aswell.
Make sure you can ship back smoothly it will save you loads of time, a coat over the bush or a good hole in it !!!!!
Try using 2 feet of line instead of short lengths, this will help when the tow picks up. This will cut down on the tangles.
Good luck Dan ! as I said it's my spin on it, give em a try !!!
One last thing if you are going to practice it would be a good idea to do it on a Saturday same time as your match because the boat traffic will be greater at the weekend and it will serve as a guide as what to expect.
Respect.
