after the longest break since they abolished the close season it great to back on the banks refreshed and kit all in order [i don't know for how long]there is something to be said for these breaks off i went up before the alarm had gone off sat nav up and running and arrived early the draw was at choices cafe top quality breakfast and most of the anglers eating one which is quite rare these days the only time I've seen a belt buster breakfast is when i visited lee on one of his matches :oit was lovely not to be organising the match as you get time to talk to your team and focus on the day in front .after the endless phone calls to find out about the piece of canal we were fishing it was plane to see nobody would say which way it would go so our target was 2lb a man after sorting out our pegs and directions to sections [well done adam top job with the maps ] i found myself at crows mill  looked the dogs bollo#ks for a canal and realised i hadn't got my camera you name it my first glance of the canal reeds both sides bushes nice colour what more do you want  back to the van kit out and off i headed as i walked further pass these reeds it changed a little still looked good but i come to a quite wide area of about 4 pegs this i was told is where skimmers live and i did think that they might have a go with the canal having colour in it anyway i walked passed theses pegs to find it suddenly narrowed to 10 metres max still with reeds both sides but didn't quite look as friendly :-?below me and one peg away was a bridge hole through the bridge two more pegs and then a lock boy all three pegs looked good
anyway set up 4 bread rigs a caster rig and a chopped worm rig look at every possible eventuality
i didn't feed too much for a start and bread would be my best bait i must say my first line was to be my best line with small roach feeding quite well and surprised most anglers around me then came a problem i needed to refeed but had watched others around me refeed and stop catching so started another line up and feed that line and waited a little time and then fished it i know bread is instant but this day it seamed to be the kiss of death anyway i caught on this new line still very small roach but at least i was catching i then feed my best line again and left it and this really worked well and for the rest of the match i carried on catching i ended up with 2lb13oz for 6 points but one bonus fish fromanyone would of pushed up in the section and some were lucky enough to catch them but for me i never had a bite on caster or chopped worm 3lb 12oz won the section it fished a lot better than any one expected and my team managed second on the day to the locals and roger marlow winning the match

great start but the local knowledge helped as i will be taking hemp next time as three out of the four anglers that won the team caught on hemp
