Welcome back yamo Thought you had deserted the forum. Although looking at your signature and comment at the bottom of your post, you are back with a vengeance
I have to agree with your comments. At this time of year, techniques do change dramatically on canals. Even with boat traffic, cananls do get much harder, although you can still have some golden days when you least expect them.
There have been some recent posts on maggotdrowners relating to "moon phases" affecting fishing. I am not so sure, as even if the moon is wrong, everything else could lead to a cracking day (water temp, colour, flow etc. )
I love this time of year on the cuts and rivers.
