Fishing reports. Which do you prefer please ?

If I may I'll give you my take on it as I can see a case for both reports and blogs.

Years ago I used to run a small site for one of my clubs, nothing flash, it didn't even have a forum, but I could post club notices, fixtures and results etc. In a way it was like a web based club book.

Then when I got involved with the web via forums  in early 2000 I used a small forum where I came upon Malc. :o  I used to post the odd report (without photos) that Malc and a few others seemed to enjoy, but the site went to the dogs, That's when I got involved with MD's.

I used to post the match results in the Match Results section and started to put my individual take on the day in the Where You Fished Today section. About 2003 I got my 1st digital camera and soon got into the habit of taking a few photo's every trip and add them to my reports, which seemed to go down well.

Unfortunately around 2004 MD's suffered a large database crash which resulted in a lot of posts and photos vanishing into the ether >:(.

This got me looking for someway of storing my reports safely online, and at the time I set up a MSN community as it was quite easy to use if a bit limited. At the back end of 2006 MSN announced that they would be closing their communities though content would be able to be exported to a blog site. The site chosen was not ideal IMO with an over fussy format and hard to use. So I spent a couple of months opening free accounts on various blog sites to try out their various formats. I settled on Xanga.com as I found it easy to configure and use  along with photobucket.com for picture hosting. I now have a Premier account on Xanga as for $25 a year it removes the adverts and allows me a bit more freedom.

Now obviously I configure the format of my reports and pictures to make best use of my Xanga site.
I could copy & paste the same report on any of the forums I use, but unfortunately the various forums all have individual quirks especially where profanity filters etc are concerned, or the size of photo's that can be used are concerned, meaning that I may have to resize photo's for a particular site or edit the text and in all honesty I often don't have the time to do it hence I find it easier to just post a link to my blog or the particular report on the blog.

Now from someone like Simon's point of view, he would probably prefer to see the actual report published on the site as it adds content, which is probably the biggest driving force for a successful site, but if the same report turns up on another site or 2 it can loose it's impact and look as if content is just being lifted from another site, and in extreme circumstances can lead to rows over who owns the rights to it, the site it's published on or the author?  I was actually offered my own monthly feature slot on another site a couple of years ago, but declined as they wanted ownership of anything published. >:(

So that's the reason I do it the way I do, feel free to criticise or offer idea's on what you might like to read in the future. Image

peter i can see and understand your reasons for blogging and i have nothing against it, but on a personal note, i used to look forward on md's to your write ups after a match. When they were posted up as reports i felt they were more personal were people could reply, coment, add to, ect to your report, were as a blog is more like reading it in a mag or book and theres no outside input.

I agree with the above posts (off dodge, and joff) were you need time to read a blog. I also agree with you when you say people such as you who posts on many sites, if you copy and paste the same report and post it on all the sites it will become repeative to some members who are also involved in many sites.

There are some good report writers on this site inc yourself, Mark V , TK (when he gets time). These make the interst in the various parts of this site ie, I have no conection to the Marsh sect of this site. If they are fishing a match at hartley lands  then they are fishing a match, but with you reports it gives me the chance to follow the match by reading your report, or were as the canal boys have no conection to the jinx series, they can follow the series by reading your reports and by being allowd to reply, join in with the banter they have an interest in a section of the forum that other wise would have nothing to do with them.

I always thought that you couldn't leave a comment unless you held a Xanga Account, but I was wrong. It is possible as I've just found out.

To add a comment scroll to the bottom of the report you want to comment on..........

Image

It will open the comment section, then select anonymous and add your name and a valid e-mail address. Add your comment in the space provided. add the code from the code box........

Image

Then click on the SUBMIT button and the job should be a good un. Image

I tend to agree with Simon that the report on the site is better. I often set out with the intention of doing a report but mostly dont get round to doing it.
With a forum report it prompts me to make some comments and add my own thoughts which without it I would probably not bother.
Also as Simon says its interesting reading the reports from other sections of the site as its not the sort of fishing we tend to do. If it were all blogs how many would actually end up looking (I class Peters blog as a bit different as it has built up its own reputation and following).

I must go and lie down for a bit as its been a bit of a strain agreeing so much with Simon. Image

This is the reason I asked the question. When in Yale AC I used to look forward to posting a report and pictures but since I have been doing the blog it has taken something out of it for me.

I suppose its the comments and p1ss taking in the topic that does not come with posting in a blog.  Image :D

I think they both have there place, however blogs are more personel. I tend to try to get across what I tried/did in a match situation. I can then look back and try to learn from it. I always look for comments, good bad or indifferent and if people can gain something from them I am pleased.

Forum reports are great for creating discussion but can still only report how the fishing was for the author. No mention of rigs or feeding patterns etc. It is fine if the match concerned is from the same website it is posted, the banter leading upto, during and after, but it is hard if posted on another as people cannot connect with the anglers.

As for "other" reports. I write one for our works matches that would not be allowed on the internet (not very family orientated or politically correct) No one is spared beit a senior manager or flt driver. They ALL get abused. This is then posted on various notice boards around the site so others can then rip into us. We have had some great trips and memories and it all goes into the report. I think there is actually only about 4 lines connected to the actual fishing, but who cares and after each match, non anglers ask when the report is coming out.

Peter i always thought simular .

To be honest (and theres no offence ment to any one for not reading theirs) out of all the blogs on here ive read .........

* Muggers Blog .... I read as i think Peters are a class of their own, but still prefered his forum reports
* Keiths Blog ..Used to read them but haven't read them for a while now. Prefered some of his cracks in his jinx reports
* Clives Blog ...Always used to read but haven't read for a while
* Malcs Blog ..... Read a few enteries but theres some not there as what was in his site fishing reports. I personaly think its because of the replies/ coments that other people made
* Bill G's Blog ... Never read (theres no reason for not reading the blog)
* Rolfs Lake Blog ... Never read (theres no reason for not reading)
* Vince's Blog ...Never read (theres no reason for not reading)
* Simple's Blog ..Read one or 2 enteries but PERSONALY think si's match reports were better.
* Al's Blog ...Never read (no reason for not reading)

Like ive said theres no offensive ment to any of the peoples blogs i haven't read or to the people whos blogs i havent read for a while.

I don't know what it is but even the reports on MD's about the jinx series this year just seems to be missing some thing. The older series reports used to just seem to have more banter ect than the lastest ones. Wether its because people have started using blog enteries or wether its because some of the new memebers have a different humour to the old members i don't know.

Unfortunately some people simply can't be arsed to post even a comment, which makes you wonder if it's worth going to all the time and trouble of posting a report either on the forums or on a blog. :(

I originally started my blog as a way of saving the various reports I'd posted on forums so that if for any reason the forums ever closed or were hacked they wouldn't be lost. It's been a pleasant aside that my blog has come to a number of peoples attention and I've had some really nice comments by way of feedback from it.

Just to spruce things up a bit, over the course of the next few days I'll edit my posts on this years Marsh Match Results threads so that my reports actually appear there. There'll probably be a few different pictures included as well that didn't make it into my blog. Image
