after reading the angling times this week [one of the few that still buys it

well ok off the shelf in the shop]we are looking at the biggest competition of the year the national now thinking of turning to commercials because a few well placed anglers think it would be better

thats utter rubbish what was wrong with the division 1 national this year it was well run and good fishing perhaps a bit of driving
just think if the nationals go to commercials who benifits this would kill all the small clubs that rely on the pegging fee's that often pays a years rent for there water
there is talk about reducing the national to 30 teams creating 300 peggers a premier event for a commercial too right at £8 a peg
ok if you reduce the national size to 30 teams natural venues could be even better at £3 peg
who wants to sit on a commerical with every peg witch looking at the figures must be right plus you'd have to have commericals that are close together as it states if you left the number of teams as this year you wouldn't of had enough pegs

too right i'm hoping more will !! its about time we sat down with tackle manufacturers,companies,match organisers and captains and just ask what do they want from angling competitive angling is in free fall [big events] and i for one think commercials haven't help this one bit in fact i'm seeing more commercial anglers returning to natural venues because what was a fantastic dream of hundred pound weights every time you fished a commercials has now turned out to be just as peggy as natural venues if the wind blow one end you catch and the other you don't a clear example of this is rob wootton he has spent most of the summer fishing our summer league and canals yes he still fishes commercials in fact he's fishing white acres this week because of the size of the competition but these are getting fewer now-er days i'm sure if you put our nationals on commercials even more teams would drop out
why not have regional nationals north south east and west
dodge was only saying a few weeks ago that the north is really suffering from the lack of matches yet time and time again this subject comes up. a couple of weeks ago mark Addy and mark downes were saying that the future of world champs is in danger as we don't fish the style of the continentals and there sort of matches so what do we think of doing is taking one of the biggest competitions off nature venues

Good stuff Joff , i am sure loads of other match anglers totally agree with you mate. It seems to me that the Angling Times seems to think that its existence depends on commercials, it could do its bit like other publications to help halt the freefall of team fishing ...... it simply has turned its back on the situation ....... that is glaringly obvious with the state of its winter lge which is about to start in SOME parts of the country. The skills required on natural venues to catch good nets of roach, skimmers,bream ,perch, chub,dace etc certainly for me make better anglers, those technical skills stay with you forever.To be succesful on the commie circuit you still have to have the feeding, presentation playing fish skills etc ..... its no surprise then that THE top anglers in this country are excellent at both disciplines because of the technical ability picked up from natural venues canals, lakes rivers etc.
I sky plussed Tight Lines and watched the clip of the Lower Thames Champs ...... it was brilliant, you could see the buzz of a big match, it looked brilliantly organised, there was "the unknown factor" of where would the bream be..... plus big payouts, fantastic TV . It was no surprise that a 47 peg midweek fish to win qualifier at Newland Hall (commercial) got a full half page coverage in the Angling Times underneath it the Thames Champs (123 pegs) got about 4 sentences ! Nuff said !!!!!

At's interest in the Div One National.
Twelve practise matches with a minimum entry of 65; 3 of them over 200. I never received any phone calls for the results from any of these matches.
Where were AT on the day of the match?

The fact is they are only intested in commie fishing as there is possibly advertising revenue there.

Anglers are their own worst enemy at times; it is up to all and sundry to send complaints in.

Joff, I bought AT since it started for well over 40 years.
I do some coaching with kids with learning difficulties and always told them to but a weekly to help them out.
When AT listed a full page of porno ads that had to stop as it was one of the things you try and keep these kids away from.
I stopped having it from then and my local PO doesn't hasve it either; they have AM and sell quite a lot of them!

There is no 'proper fishing' in AT any more, so I am lead to believe anyway.

have to say the lower thames match was the best run match ive ever been on. but and there,s always a but the fishing was awful. the div 2 on the trent again awful. tk,s bash on the warickshire avon even worse. on my local bristol avon at staverton very poor. that leaves you with canals which are not everyone,s idea of a day out. whilst i would love to fish the grand union i cannot say the same for the leeds liverpool, and so on, and whilst i agree with the nationals on natural venue,s i can also see the a/trust,s point of view re dwindling numbers. i would love to see a return on the all england though.

Believe me, the way things are going we will end up with a match like the old England and I can't see anything wrong with that.
The idea of 30 teams fishing a National on a commie could well finish off match fishing altogether.
If anybody thinks turnouts are increasing on commies they are living in cloud cuckoo land.
This is only my view for what it is worth.

there,s no way you could have a national of that size on a commie. we need 4 venue,s that hold 400 pegs in 4 parts of the country and rotate them. cant speak for anywhere else but the kennet and avon canal would be awesome. and easy to manage. wont happen though we will end up on the usual sh@tholes as we do every year.

our summer league we try and cater for all and it works well 2 river 2 commercial 2 canal and 2 on a natural lake probably the hardest venue to find but most of the commercial anglers carried on fishing all the venues
i think the reason why is there seams to be a stigma between the two often a commercial anglers will keep his fishing to one or two venues and probably fishes them 3 to 4 times a week [nothing wrong with this ]and is often top of his game but most don't think they can compete. from the outside it stops the average angler going to these sort of matches so you find it's often the same anglers fishing week in week out and of course numbers drop if there's a bigger match else where but if you put everyone in the same boat [still the good anglers will win] no practice matches most will have a stronger feeling that some venues will suit there way of fishing better than others and then will try harder to compete on the venues they are not quiet as confident this is whats happened on our summer league
on this bases i could run a 70 pegger more or less every week as no one has time to perfect any of the venues

If commercial anglers want a National on commercial fisheries the easy answer is to run it themselves.

I can't see it but IF the Angling Trust take that route our lads can put on a Canal National in the Stafford and district are area any time. Costs would also be kept down as much as possible.

I reckon we have at least 2,000 pegs on the canals around here and that is only taking in the Staffs-Worcs, the Trent and Mersey and the Shropshire Union Canals.

For me if both the Angling Trust (nationals) and the Angling Times (winter leagues) managed to secure some decent extra sponsorship to promote these flagship events i am sure it would create a better and healthier end product, it is in everyones interest that these two events survive and prosper but for this to happen MORE TEAMS need to be encouraged to enter ..... entry fee discounts could be a way forward to encourage new teams to take part ?
