Went to go to the hospital for a blood test this morning, nearly there I heard a noise like a stone hitting the windscreen. Had a quick look while in the queue to cross the roundabout... cant see anything. went across the roundabout and 30 yards further, a loud bang and the REAR screen disintegrates into the back of the car.

I have full comp insurance so they will fix it for the £50 excess. Trouble is Autoglass cant come until tomorrow morning so I cant go fishing . Bugger

Duck tape + clear polythene

But can you get self heating polythene for when it mists up?

The screen was dirty so it will save me having to clean it.

How the hell did it happen anyway

Thats what concerns me. I can understand the front screen going if it was hit by a stone thrown up while moving at a reasonable speed. I was only going around 20 mph when I heard the first sound, I was passing some workmen doing something with the pavements but they were only digging with shovels. I thought it was a stone hitting the front screen.
It was about 60 yards further on when it shattered and I have a thought in the back of my mind it could have been someone with an airrifle.

How often does a rear windscreen go. Perhaps Mugger will give his thoughts later on.

If it was an air rifle surely it would just make a hol ein it without shattering

I have shot a rear windscreen on a old ford escort with a 12 bore, it never shattered like that just pepper potted it.

As it's only toughened glass, not laminated, it probably got chipped by a flying stone Dave. They don't always go instantaneously especially if the car is stationary at the time, but as you drove off any undulation in the road would cause flexing and it would just have gone. :(
It's not as uncommon as you might think, though it's normally down to someone slamming a tailgate shut only to find that something hasn't been loaded right and strikes the glass from the inside.

The last one I actually saw was a little different, as the cause of the screen shattering was found on the parcel shelf of the car..........
