........on the Curley Wyrley today  Image

Had a wander down Wood Lane today

Down in the 60's Messrs Nickless and Derry were having tincas and big black slabs in bags approaching the ton a piece.

Wandering back to the car a Cashmores member had set up in a supposedly 'not so fancied area' - peg 42 to be precise........well I know he's knocking on a bit and spose his legs are playing him up at his age..... :P

'Any good'  Image

'Some silvers and skimmers' was the response.

I watched for 10 mins - a bite a chuck he was having.

'You'll need some 'stampers' next week - you wont get anywhere next week with them 3-4 ouncers, unless you have about 100 plus of em' I joked.

'Have you tried  Image yet?, I said after looking at his bait tray which resembled what I used to carry and feed 20 odd years down on the Staffs Worcs and Shroppie.

'No'

'Used to stick all that in' I told him, 'now I'm frighten to death to feed an 1/8th of it'

Well it was a practise session, so I think disbelieving me, or was it just humouring me, in the lot went, whilst he carried on with a bite a chuck on the existing line, picking up a few decent 1/2lb plus skimmers.

15 mins pass. 'Give it a go with  Image on the hook'

First look on the line, skimmer knocking the lb mark. Then another within 30 secs.

No bite then for about 3 mins. 'You've made me cock me peg up' just as the float zipped under. A battle for a few mins and a 3lb tinca is in the net..........he's got about 8lb already in 40 mins.

Couple of minutes later, tinca no2 puts in an appearance, but has got bigger shoulders and smashes the Cashmores man up.

Off I wander. 'See you later, I'll pop back in a couple of hours if you are still here'

About 3 hours later I get a call - 'I'm just packing up if you want to come and see what I've got'

I'm only in Blocko so off I pop.

Well our mystery angler has packed up and is waiting vigilently for me with his net still in.

Stacked out, he struggles to lift it as its contents thrash about inside.

Well there's half a dozen (or more) tincas, several small bream knocking the 2lb mark, double figures of silvers - roach, skimmers and some stonking rudd, all capped by the fish of the day............a big black slab that looked to be knocking the 6lb mark to me with a slightly smaller brother.

Who needs commercials with fishing like that on your doorstep?

Think this guy used think I was telling porkies when I told him about the quality of fishing to be had down there.......particularly when he was confronted by the  Image on our last knock up down there....... Image

See Sprucey - I told you there was a few fish in there........and you daint even fish a 'c*ck' peg  Image

If I just say 'There was this bloke was having a few.....' it could be out of an Enid Blyton book.......at least people can check it out now they know who to ask.

Anyway - how about a big thanks for that top tip  Image

I'm just glad it worked for you........dont think I'd have done it if it was my peg..........

I wore :-[ :-[ :-[

Got a confession all..........

Had a call tonight..............

i was inaccurate with my posting that

Down in the 60's Messrs Nickless and Derry were having tincas and big black slabs in bags approaching the ton a piece

Truth is :-[

They only had about 80lb a piece - similar bags of around 50lb tincas and 30lb of slabs..........apparently is was black with the slabs but they ended getting 'blown off' with those gusts we had...........

Heard there was a bost section or two too Image

Forgot to add Sprucey..........

With them only having 80lb, makes your bag sound half respectful

Haha.........this coming from Tinca Ted :D

You always seem to have a tug or two from one........or have you forgot

a) about that 9lber you showed me the photos of
b) you wipped our butts down there with your waggler rod

Is this a four net job ?

I've only got three

Just the job MarkV - one for silvers, one for tinca's and one for the slabs Image

Dont think you'll need a 4th for the carp - they usually just smash us up Image
Having trouble getting my head around 80lbs plus on a cut

The old adage applies here MarkV - divide your pleasure session by 4 or 5

So if you do 10lb silvers in practice, expect 2-3lb in a match environment.

40lb of tincas - expect 8-10lb in a match if they show and you are prepared to sit it out for em

As well as spacing as the Chockie Munster refers too, so much also depends on conditions. Changes in air pressure, but critically down there yesterday was overcast, there was a fair ripple and a slight touch of colour, not much, but a touch.

Next week it'll be bright sunshine, hot still conditions, like a mill pond without a breath of fresh air.....you wait and see. Image

But having said that, I fully expect double figures to win it - wont be me, I like being active catching silvers - someone will have 3 to 5 tincas.

We've had a couple of double figure winning bags of silvers (roach/skimmers) off there, along with the tinca nets, going back to the days before we controlled the water and I used to book matches on it off Big Baz Astbury

Spent the last two hours tying up some Sprucey specials  ;)

See I do learn summat every trip out - whether I'm fishing or not  Image

And I clocked them yesterday Mr Spruce  Image

Inbetween time I received a complaint.............

Mr tk - I saw your posting re peg 42 well I went there this morning. What a waste of time. I fished from just before 6am to 8,30am and couldnt catch a tench off the peg all I had was roach, some perch and skimmer bream. 30-40lb no chance i only did about 15lb at maximum. There was another old bloke fishing just past me and he only had 1 tench and some roach'

Well sorry mate if you are reading this I can't guarantee massive bags all the time - is that what its come to - trying to compete with commercials? The Curley Wyrley does me, I'm happy with my 3-5lb of silvers anytime - decent cut fishing in my book.      Image

Forgot to add.............as it is was so eventful yesterday

Another ex member was practising for next Sat.........how big was that slab Image

Plus next time anyone bumps into Mr Nickless, ask him how big that pike was that he hooked - he reckoned 'It was bigger than me' :o

Just had a chat with another 'competitor' whose been practising down there for Sat's match.............

He's fished it on Thurs, Sat and yesterday afternoon - 3 different pegs, including a final session on the one nearest the bridge...........

And his poorest weight was an estimated 15lb yesterday..........but then again he was 'practising' on the silvers only as he reckons he's got the ticas and slabs sorted out if they are decide to show on Sat Image
