Police were called to a match at Mansfields Lake yesterday to investigate a serious mugging on the bank. Bystanders had reported the event and some said it was the worst case they had ever seen.
The victim Vince Gould is now in a secure mental health centre after having been seen crying down his phone to the Samaritans and threatening suicide.
It was supposed to be a friendly competition between fellow members of a fishing forum. There had been reports of one member continually bullying and taking one pound coins from Vince but Vince was making overtures that this could not continue and he was determined to get one back.
Things looked to be going his way when early in the match he managed to catch a couple of carp whilst The Mugger was fishless. After blagging some maggot Mugger then caught a few silvers but as he was still some way behind with 30 minutes to go things were looking cut and dried for Vince to at last receive some reward. Until Mugger cast in front of the next vacant peg and at last got a decent fish to put him within range and the concern began to show on Vinces face and he wasn’t helped but the comments that now flew round the lake..
The call from the organiser said that there were 2 minutes to go and things were getting tense, could Vince survive this vicious onslaught.
The call went out “All Out” as Mugger shouted “Fish On” as Vince turned into a weeping wreck as he could see events easily from the other side of the small lake. Ryan who had been watching events counted down the time from the bite to the end …… 8 SECONDS.
The weigh in would reveal all.
Vince was first 6lb 12 ozs.
Were Muggers fish big enough, would the silvers make the difference. A tense walk round the other side of the lake and then the questions would be answered.
Mugger 8lb 10oz
Reputation intact a smiling man led the way to the car park to receive yet another contribution to his retirement fund in full view of his fellow competitors and cameras. Vince was led away screaming " 8 SECONDS, 8 BLOODY SECONDS"
