Or it could have been titled

[move]It’s 10 degrees warmer up here………….[/move]

How come I’m always up for it on a Friday night, but not quite so come the Saturday morning Image

Well pegging out, Simps might have clocked it as we walked along the cut dropping the pegs down on a few appetizing looking swims.

With a cruel Easterly wind blowing……….’When the wind blows from the East, the fish bite least’, I still fancied having a few but really fancied pegs 3- 12………the reason being
a) I’ve fished quite a few of the pegs and always have caught off ‘em, whereas the higher numbered pegs were going to be a bit of an unknown (well to me) area to draw
b) The lower pegs were more sheltered
c) They also carried a tinge of colour which dropped out the higher you went.

Having walked the length and back, with 21 pegs in it was draw time. One small problem, we’d only put 21 pegs in and 22 faces were eager to dip into KOD’s hat. OK whoever drew 22 (unmarked) would have to plonk themselves 20 yards further down the cut.

Draw time and the CURSE  Image Image Imagecertainly kicked in……..

Low numbers were soon flying out the bag, with the odd ‘high un’ and big Dave B didn’t seem to be relishing the walk down to 21  Image

Nearly all done and there’s just me and KOD to draw………..’I don’t believe it’, the last two pegs in the bag are 20 & 22. I have a dip……….yep you’ve guessed it, peg 22 – a long traipse almost down to the A5.   Image Image Image

With a couple of hundred weight of tackle off I trudged the length again……….

Arriving at the peg the wind was whistling round my ears and gusting……..a look up the cut and it looked like there was only me in any wind. :'(

Whilst setting up, big Dave B obviously realized what a danger and formidable opponent I was  :P :P :P  came up ‘We’re off the fish today, and you should do me, somebody’s on my boat’

::) ::) ::)‘Yep……. don’t get coming it’ was my retort with a laugh, ‘somebody’s on mine too……I’ve seen ‘em walk passed the window’

The off………3 quite differing punch and and 2 joker lines fed. A few small roach were soon picked off the inside punch line, but I was having trouble…….my bread was crap.I normally micro and roll, but hadn’t today and was having trouble hooking it. Image

A walk up to KOD after 20 mins and I ‘loaned’ a small 2 by 1 inch pice of rolled bread – which more than lasted me the match.  Image

I was picking up fish regularly, trouble was they were 3 to the ounce  :o :o :o

Half was through, Gerry came down. Again Dave B tried to ‘blag me’ as he told Gerry I was ‘doing him’.

‘Ar, I’ve heard that one before too’ was my response.

Gerry had had another disaster……a decent joker fish skillfully played turned out to be a jack pike of about 2lbs which trashed his rig at the net.  >:(

Then he’d lost a section in the cut  Image Image Image and couldn’t fish any further than the track……..with his two carefully primed long lines left untouched.

A couple of minutes with me and Gerry said he was wandering back to his peg because ‘It’s freezing here down by you’. ‘Yep I know - it’s 10 degrees warmer up there……’

Anyway I ended up trashing one of my punch rigs and a replacement just wouldn’t behave right.  :( :( :(

My long joker and punch lines against the boat produced…………….nowt.  Image

I had bites on single joker off the nearside line……..sailaways……..but couldn’t touch em. Got me scratching my head as I altered shotting and depth – and wasted time, but I was perplexed and wanted to solve why.  Image Image Image

The result? One solitary half ounce roach – perhaps they were even more micro roach just hanging on the solitary joker?

Anyway I blew up for the end, packed away and waited for the scales I’d left up on pegs 1 & 2 to materialize. They daint.  Image Image Image

So I traipsed the length again with all my gear (minus keepnet) to pick up the scales………..to walk the length back and forwards yet again weighing in, trying to give Tigerbay an education how to use beam scales. ;)

Anyway here’s the result…………

PEG
1 VESTE DNW
2 TIGERBAY 3.9.5
3 THE SHARK 0.11.9
4 BIG COLIN 3.8.6
5 GOUGHY 3.12.3
6 PHIL B 0.5.0
7 BALL IT IN DNW
8 CHESLYNBOY DRY
9 YAMO 0.15.5
10 BUDGIE 2.6.13
11 SIMPS 0.12.6
12 BARRY ASTBURY 3.11.8
13 SPRUCEY 3.9.7
14 LLOYDY 2.9.5
15 M PEARCE 0.5.12
16 COTTI 0.15.7
17 ZORRO 0.5.13
18 IAN DAVIES DNW
19 GERRY DNW
20 KOD 1.2.13
21 DAVE BERROW 2.6.8
22 TK - BDM 1.6.1

So the other Rough Hay mercenary – Goughy took the first place bish bosh with his squat and pinkie catch of skimmers, Image  whilst the trumpeter bombed out big style  Image

Veste tipped 2-3lb away – skimmers, cuss he’d been blagged with tales of 6lb plus – don’t think he was too chuffed  >:( >:( >:(

Other observations………

Simps tightened his stranglehold on the Grueller title  Image as nearest contender Zorro looks like he struggled.

Sprucey fired a warning shot out to the Cashmores crew – with a first time gruller weigh in - as he had all his fish – stamp roach – on the caster -  well at least that’s what he told me.

Big Baz Astbury also showed he can still cut it on the cuts and Budgie is leaning quick on them too.  Image Image Image In fact Budgie told me he enjoyed it more than fishing at Cudmore ;)

Here endeth the tale…………..onto Grueller match 9 -  what trials,  tribulations and  Image Image Image will face us next

Luck for me I was in the wooded area where it was 10 degrees warmer Image
Out of my 12oz 11dr I caught 10oz in the first 10 minutes and the other 2oz 11dr in the last 5 minutes Image
The fish left me and I could not get them back. They must have favoured the B & J going in on the peg to my right or Budgies SB to my left, either way it was very hard going for me. But hey I had fun.

TK you mentioned you bread been sh!t, mine was the same. I have not had it happen before but it was going like a blob of snot on the hook. That was the warburtons stuff, luckily I had some asda stuff on backup and it was aok. Weird Image Image

I had to go to sleep on my belly last night as my wobbly cheeks was still glowing red from the slapping I got Image Image

I think the real reason I did so bad was because I got yellow stream off TK's breath when we were peggin out Image Image Image Image

Cheslynboys Trumpet was a bit droopy after the weigh in toImage Image Image

Good match , Thanks Image Image

Err bit of a cock up on the weighing in front.

I drew peg 2. Before the off TK dropped the scales off, wondered why on peg two ? Cant remember if Vesty was on his peg 1 yet.

I was honoured, charged with looking after the scales eh !

At the whistle I packed away and was surprised I'd done it even before the weighers in arrived, especially as my packing away is almost as slow as my setting up.

Anyway, waited ... and waited... no sign. Thought i'd have a go at setting up those fangled beam scale things. Just to be helpfull like.

Screwed on the legs hung the basket on...and left the rest. Looked far too complicated and didnt want to mess up something that wasnt mine.

Dopped them off a peg down, at peg 1, ready for the weigh in. Went back to my peg and waited... some more.

Down comes TK  >:(  Not happy that I hadnt taken the scales up !
Oh dear i'd assumed we'd be weighing in from peg one, why else would the scales have been left at this end ??? Hmmm..now understand, apparently peg 1 watches the tackle and pegs 2 & 3 weigh in !!! Plus easier for peole to walk back.

Good job I wasn't sitting on my box with a cigar out.   :D :D

With 2 more gruellers to come can Simps hold on Joffie  Image

I think he's starting to feel the pressure  ;)

Changing the subject, come on Tigerbay, tell us a bit more about your exploits on the joker and what you could have done to get those precious extra few drams  Image

I wasn't that miffed about the scales...........honestly   :D

I enjoyed the walk - had plenty of exercise and besides it was nice up on those lower numbered pegs, did I tell you........

Well he has certainly had two poor results on the cuts TK. Trouble is neither Zorro or yourself has taken advantage and capitlaised on it. Image

He couldnt have another bad one on the penultimate match, Could he? :o :o Image

It was a lovely day on peg2. Only problem.... i'd forgotten my shorts :D

No wind, a full flask and plenty of bites. What more can a man ask ?

Started on the nearside, top 3 and a half a section  ...first put in a 4oz skimmer. the gods were smiling on me... next put in a small roach then intermitent bites. Stayed there for an hour picking up the odd bit until I went out over joker that i'd potted in at the start at 7 1/2 m very slightly to my right.

First put in , float settled and a decent roach. then roach roach roach... it was a mad half hour or so. Including one of 10oz. My only thoughts were, how long can I keep it going ? Do I keep at 'em , do I rest 'em. If I rest 'em will a pike come and wreck it before I go back ?  Will a boat come through ? Decided to keep going.

After a while the bites did slow and I tried a line to my left fishing 9m. Just the odd small roach. Swopped back and forth between the lines but couldnt get them going again. Also tried a foot off the far side boat, but very little. Picked up odd fish here and there to the whistle.

There were always blade roach on the inside line, but I couldnt be bothered with them as i'd seen other people netting fish, Vesty to my left, Big Col ( always a danger ) two along and , I think Goughy beyond him.

One of those blades could have made me 3rd place and my first ever grueller prize. Or if I hadn't stopped for so much tea ! Or if my decision making had been better on when to swop lines... too much plugging away at unfruitfull swims. Secretly i'd thought i might even be in with a chance of winning it ! But would never have admitted it of course lol, like a lot of you. As it turned out I wasn't very far away, very tight at the top... only a couple of ounces separating the first four.

All this hindsight, but I thoroughly enjoyed a day on a venue that has caused me so much heartache in the past, in true grueller style and a venue I had begun to consider a 'tough cut'.

Smashing day that sent me  home in a smashing mood, as fishing always does when I catch some.

On a serious note .. I seem to have lost a sock. This is no ordinary sock.

As Harold Steptoe would say .. ' these are the most hexpensive socks I have hever purchaysed '

12 quid a bloomin pair inc p&p. great for keeping your feet warm, two weeks old.

Why is it the cheapies stay with you for twenty years and the expensive stuff goes walkies ?

If anyone spots a sodden grey/blue thing when the snow clears where the cars were parked and can bear to pick it up, (you can use a plastic bag)... a 50p reward is offered !!!!!! Dam and darn it @**£@"( ()_"@@! :'(  Image lol
