Coldest night of the years so far – snow and overnight frost.


Not much above freezing at the moment.


Just had a walk outside at work and a gander at the pool there.


Small fish are making their presence known all over the pool – topping and swirling. It aint as if it’s a shallow pool, it’s reputed to go to two hundred feet in parts.


Looks like I might have to fish the w&j shallow on Sat

Cold water is heavier. When it gets cold quickly, the rapidly cooled stuff sinks and its colder down below. Hence the fish topping.

If thats the case why does Ice form at the top instead of the bottom of the canal?

Errr dunno Davec. But I do think cold water is heavier and sinks.

I've always taken its as being a phenomenon that occurs for a short while, when there has been a severe sudden drop of temperature.

It's a belief I have. Could be wrong. It was used to explain why chub were caught shallow some days on the Warwicks Avon, Hampton Ferry etc in the '70's which shows my age. Only just updating my tactics.

What surprised me was I still expected them to be 'down a bit', not showing on the surface, as I would have been expecting the top layer to be 'chilled' and building up the 'next' layer to sink

Hey ME - when we used to fish it a few years back, we'd fish 10 or 11 mtrs to hand...........if the water was shallow enough in your peg...........with the float right under your tip!!!

Clearly remember that the perch if picked up off the bottom used to have 'the bends' when they came up from that depth and used to float cock eyed and swim in circles near the top ring of your keepnet

i dont know if im right or wrong, but i was always told to fish in the deeper areas of the venue and split the depth of the water into thirds with the bottom, mid third and top third. I was told to fish the bottom part of the mid section as the bottom section will be to cold for the reason simular to what tiger as said and the top will be to cold due to the cold air temp, frost, cold rain, ect ect. The middle section i was told is the warmest as the warmth gets trapped between the 2 cold areas. I was also told to have a shollow and margin swim as on sunny days the top and margins warm up quickest .


Like i say i may be right or i may be wrong. Its just something i was told years ago by an old bloke
