Is it to do with a slight increase in tanin levels - similar to putting tea leaves in water Image

Or gases given off rotting leaves Image

i'm i right in thinking this puts fish off for a time more so in canals and lakes rather than running water
the amount of leave at the moment is colossal in the river and it must put a layer on the bottom of canals inches thick
