The 1953 National Angling Championships was on the River Nene. It was fished by a then record of ninety-two teams of twelve which is one thousand one hundred and four anglers who weighed in 2,358 lbs 11 oz 4 drams between them (a spit over 2 lbs a man the average). Lincoln won the team event for the fifth time, others being in 1922 River Witham, 1926 River Ouse, 1935 River Witham and 1936 River Thurne. The individual winner of the 1953 National was a Mr. N. N. Hazelwood who fished for Cambridge, with 27-14-0.
Lincoln also won the National in 1962 on the River Welland.
Back to 1953 and that trophy in the picture would have been called The Peter Groves Cup.
I am almost certain you wanted to know all that

In the photo are,
Joe Thorpe, Don Rowley, Pat Kemp, Ron Blackwell, Eddie Allen (who taught Ivan to fish) and Frank Turner (secretary). It's about 15 years before John Essex joined Joff.
These are the anglers who taught the likes of Pete Jayes, obviously Ivan so they did a pretty good job in my opinion.

That photo is one that John Essex has shared with me as being the Leicester and District Amalgamation team of 1957. John is currently trying to get his Nationals book down to a manageable size!
