I remember watching Bob Latchford, had a bit of a belly on him and an even worse beard but he knew where the back of the net was.. and how to nod 'em in.

Brilliant Herb. hero of mine glad someone else remembers his sublime skills. He was not quick by any means but a real pleasure to watch. I know he is Irish but England ought to ditch half their team for a player like McIlroy who could hold onto the ball for an age if he wanted too.

as a kid living in clitheroe my mum would never allow me to go to united too far, so i watched burnley and blackburn alternate weeks ( 11 miles) so i watched nearly every home game jimmy mc'ilroy played and when burnley sold him to stoke i vowed never to go to turf moor ever again , to this day 49 years later i never have. i did go to stoke to see him once and im sure stan mathews was playing 1962 i think.we moved to stockport in 62 so i was allowed to watch my team every week home and away.

Might be worth checking Herb but Stoke v Burnley may have been in 1963, Stoke came up in 1962, Burnley finished third; I think Stoke got promotion to Div One.

Best players I saw play live, as opposed to on the telly. Best, Law, Charlton, Beckenbauer.
Pele, obviously brilliant, but everyone remembers him for the goals he DIDN'T score (outrageous dummy Vs Uruguay, shot from the halfway line against Czechs, THAT save by Banks). If Law had been on the end of that cross Gordon would have been picking the ball out of the net, I saw Law score headers past him too many times.

bill it was april 1st 1963. second division stoke won 3-1 i think cant remember who against. just remember the date. as we just moved from wilmslow that day and my mum wanted me out of the way. i remember because she was knocked over ( car) at stockport station on her way to meet me and spent 3 months in hospital. i didnt know where we lived and spent 4 hrs in the police station. sh!t day.

Best footballers I've only seen bits of footage of on the telly - and some bits on youtube if you take a look, are John Charles and Duncan Edwards. Both out of the same egg. Could play anywhere. Puskas and Di Stefano also rate a mention. And to anyone who reckons the game is too fast nowadays for these old stagers - they had the ability to play the game at whatever pace damn well suited 'em.

Memory test, not absolutely certain but I think it was Stoke v Luton, I was there unless I'm getting it mixed up with another game. If I'm right Stan scored one his rare goals for Stoke.

I have seen all those play; I had to call up the memory banks on Duncan Edwards but I saw him at the Wolves but can't remeber too much about him.
There is an interesting feature in todays Daily Mail (Thurs) by the sportswriters suggesting their best teams. The only one all ten put in was George Best; Bobby Moore was in nine.

I doubt if even Bill saw this guy play - league wise he only played 18 games for Barnsley scoring 8 goals before he got injured and decided that his day job offered more security in those days of the maximum wage. But his career stats as a goal scorer were astonishing, and he set records with almost every non-league club that he graced.
His record for Gresley Rovers, where he played most of his football was amazing - 313 games 285 goals. Proper old fashioned centre forward, not over tall but built like a bull and with a sledgehammer shot in either foot.
