Ah, that'd be me then! I upset someone last year by having a dig about pegging on a certain match and have also openly commented on my opinions on canal chub. I apologised for both and assumed things were ok now. To set the record straight I like catching chub and enjoy fishing for them as its exciting when you hook them BUT I just wish they were more spread out so the drawbag didnt revolve around who drew the noted chub bush in some matches, whether thats the Staffs-Worcs, the Shroppy, Cov Cut or anywhere. I still remember how you had to draw the overflow on the Alcan on the Oxford Canal in Banbury and it saddens me to see how Wombourne has gone from one of the best squatt venues to a peggy chub-dominated one. Thats my opinion, Im entitled to express it and people shouldnt take it to heart. Actually, it's more of an observation/comment rather than a finite statement. Like I said, I do like catching them when im lucky enough to draw on a few; just like bream, tench, carp and any other big fish pegs.

I see this as a light-hearted p1ss take forum where everyone is fair game. I'm not too proud to take the p1ss out of myself either. Christ, you've all got enough reasons to! Image I wouldnt say anything on this forum to deliberately upset anyone so Im sorry if ive ever offended anyone (except Woodhouse, Chris V and Lloydy! Image) I struggle to understand people that can dish out insults, moans and banter yet cannot take them back in the spirit in which they were intended. Oh well, you live and learn... Image

I had a problem or two to deal with at home yesterday, hence not being on the shite. I also had to go out in the evening.

I may have to go 'missing' for odd days in the future, that is something I can't avoid at the moment.

I can't believe some of the fantasy and crap I have just read by Endpeg. I thing rose-tinted spectacles is somewhat the teapot calling the kettle.........

I have been verbally attacked twice, once though an article, once by mouth for what he considered bad pegging. Our club has seen a very detrimental and damaging article about our Little Onn stretch and these have cost our club match bookings and revenue. I can tell you all that this article was not done in a 'light hearted' way. Am I supposed to sit back and say nothing?

Here is open invitation for you Jon. You and you alone are very welcome to come to Stafford and peg the NFA National Championships Division One out.

Me, bitter and hold grudges; I don't think so. In all my 60 years I don't think I have an enemy in the world, (a few crank phone callers maybe but no enemies).

I come on this website purely as fun and relief for a short while at a time. I believe we all poke fun out of each other basically because we mutually respect each other.

Hmm, should've gone to Specsavers with those rose tinted specs!
Our club has seen a very detrimental and damaging article about our Little Onn stretch and these have cost our club match bookings and revenue. I can tell you all that this article was not done in a 'light hearted' way. Am I supposed to sit back and say nothing?

What a load of crappity smacking tripe if you think one man's ramblings in an inconsequential mag has cost your club money! I suppose the catch shots from the venue i've sent to the Mail and Boo's feature in MF have done nothing for the controlling club either? Ive checked what ive written about chub and Little Onn and, like most things i write, YES IT WAS written as a light-hearted rant so If they are damning in any way then i'm sorry! Jeesh, here are the two articles in full if you or anyone else doesn't believe me:

The Chub Club
I have some strong opinions when it comes to chub on canals. Basically, I don’t think they should be in them! I don’t mind the odd one or two showing up in an angler’s catch but I think the situation on many of my regular Midland canals is a bit of a joke now.
Drennan North West’s Neil Martin won a recent 100-pegger with 40lb 8oz of them while two pegs away I took the section by default with 3lb 6oz. We all had a sore neck that day, that’s for sure! Neil was on an end peg by the famous cables on the Shroppy at Little Onn, a venue with more than its fair share of the species IF you draw the right peg.
I don’t want to take any credit away from Neil as he got his feeding dead right and did exceptionally well to catch that many fish but if you take the chub out of the equation the match suddenly opens right up. As it stands, most people seem to spend half their matches trying to catch chub because they know they cannot frame without them.
I suppose it’s no different to river matches where everyone feels they have to leger a halibut pellet in order to win with barbel. That’s not what I believe canal (or river) fishing should be about.
Another recent match was on a 100-pegger on the Coventry Canal at Atherstone where the top six weights were once-again made up of chub. Again, I took the section by default with 5lb 15oz of perch and a bonus skimmer, beaten by a chub bush in the section! A fortnight later on the same canal and it was much the same story. My meagre 12oz effort was blitzed by an 11lb chub weight and several other chub-based catches. That match was won by Browning Central’s Matt Hodgetts with an impressive 39lb 11oz – mostly 15 chub, plus a small carp with an identity crisis!
Of course, drawing a noted ‘chub bush’ doesn’t automatically win you a match; there is definitely some element of skill involved, and you must get your feeding, presentation and tackle spot on to do these pegs justice. I actually think extracting big, wily chub from snag-infested canal swims is one of the most exciting and demanding methods there is as everything has to be stepped right up to stop these fish in their tracks. Numerous people suffered breakages and straightened hooks when we were at Little Onn. The worst bite to fish ratio in that match was apparently, poor old John Shepley who got just two of his 11 chub out – and he somehow threw one of those back, too! No one laughed, honest!
I actually do like catching chub from canals. What I don’t like is the fact that they only seem to shoal up around pegs with features. I’ve thought long and hard about a solution and now believe I have the answer. Rather than take all the chub out and put them back in the rivers where they belong (The Wye has too many already if Lee Edwards’ 300lb catch is anything to go by!) all we need to do is plant a big bush in front of EVERY single peg. Sorted!

Obviously no sense of humour if you took that the wrong way. Here's another:

Chubby chasers
Samuel Taylor Coleridge famously wrote, “Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink”. I would like to change that to “Chub, chub everywhere but none in my swim to catch!” (a joke. No!?)
For those that don’t know, a very wise(?) person thought that it would be a good idea to stock canals like the Shropshire Union and Staffs-Worcester with chub. In my opinion that is one of the single most stupid decisions in the history of fishing. I love catching chub on rivers and lakes but not on my beloved canals.
I know that places like the Oxford Canal have always held a few rogue chub but some of the canals near me are absolutely teaming with them. From my own experiences the only people who fish canals are match anglers and the odd pleasure angler. Pleasure anglers generally cant cast their ‘perch bobs’ past the middle so that means the chub that live tight across are only caught by hardened match anglers. All the canal anglers I know get more of a buzz from catching a weight of roach rather than a few chub for the same weight. Unfortunately a skillfully mustered roach catch on the Shroppy, and many similar venues, will be blown out of sight if the resident chub decide to have a munch. Unfortunately the chub don’t live on every peg but the odd one can turn up anywhere. For that reason no one dares to fish with delicate 0.08mm caster rigs any more – that’s a recipe for getting smashed up.
For this reason some stretches of the Shroppy can be very peggy affairs and there can be little point in fishing for anything other than chub in order to frame. It’s great if you’re on ‘em, but a bit demoralising if you’re not.
This is one reason why team fishing can be so great. Even if you aren’t on the noted chub bush in your section there is still the chance of trying to finish as high up the section as possible with a tidy bag of ‘normal’ fish. A successful combined team result more than makes up for the fact that a complete numpty has somehow managed to drag half a dozen chub from the only bramble bush in your section. I’m not bitter… honest!
I know I’m grossly exaggerating things but the canal purist in me gets saddened when a species like chub takes much of the skill out of the framing weights. I know chub aren’t stupid fish. You still need to feed it right and have balanced gear that enables you to get bites while still being in with a chance of stopping them reaching any snags. I also admit that it’s exciting stuff when you’ve drawn ‘the’ peg where they live. The problem therefore must be that I never seem to draw ‘the’ peg. (Was this not an honest, light-heartened jibe at what i'd just ranted about?!)
The first practice match for the winter league round on the Shroppy at Little Onn was the perfect case in point. All the framing weights were made up of chub. Sensas Dams & lock’s Steve Palmer lead the way with 22lb 6oz of fish to 3lb 8oz and my section was won by Eclipse’s Pete Johanssen with with 18lb 11oz of chub. That also placed him fourth overall. Pete is a good angler and from what I could see he did well to catch that weight. He must have been in the chub epicenter, though, as the next guy to him managed three chub for almost 10lb while the next two anglers, including myself, managed one paltry chub apiece. At least chub-infested canals make me appreciate default section wins – especially when I got default second in section!
A fortnight later on the actual winter league round it was the same story as, once again, all the framers caught chub. My teammate, Rob Quinn, drew his usual flier to win the match with 18lb 11oz of the species. The biggest chub of the match weighed a clonking 5lb 14oz – that’s quite a few gudgeon in my book!
I was told before the start that I couldn’t possibly finish higher than third in my section as the two pegs either side of the cables would easily beat me. That proved accurate as one of those swims threw up three skimmers for 8lb and the other had 11lb of chub – and that was despite throwing a 2lber back ten minutes into the match! I ended up third in section with 3lb 9oz of bits in a chub-free zone and, yet again, I managed to pocket some money for default second in section.
Team-wise we finished well behind Browning Central who put in a fine performance. That meant that after two rounds we were tying on three points apiece. Saying that, we would have ran them a bit closer ‘if’ we had everybody weigh in. My captain, Mick Hatchard, didn’t fish this round and, as I was talking to him after the whistle, Michael Buchwalder came strolling along shaking his head. “What are you doing up here, you haven’t weighed in yet?” Mick asked him. “I won’t be weighing in at all,” Michael replied. “I lifted my net out of the water to see what I’d caught and accidentally slipped!” Apparently every single one of Michael’s hard-earned fish had disappeared back into the canal! The horrified expression on my captain’s face said it all. Until that calamity he thought the team had done pretty well! Michael was so distraught that he decided to take his anger out on his keepnet. It must have looked like a scene from Edward Scissorhands as he completely slashed his net to death in a fit of rage! Oh, and if anyone is after a Preston pole roller there’s one in the middle of the canal near Little Onn Bridge…

Oh, and this is how i closed off that month's column:

Keep on smiling!
Well this is actually my twelfth End Peg, which means I have been writing my column for a whole year now. I certainly got off to a shaky start with my early columns. For those that don’t know, I actually got banned from a fishery after only my second article! The main reason was for mentioning a huge water vole that I mistakenly described as a rat. It was a harsh lesson learnt and has made me realise that I can be a bit naïve at times. I am sorry if what I write is not taken in the light-hearted manner that I intended. That episode also made me realise that there are a few spiteful people out there who like to deliberately stir and cause trouble, but the less said about that the better.
I never set out to deliberately upset anyone and I have quickly realised that not everyone can take jokes on the chin like I can. When you have been beaten with the ‘ugly stick’ like me you quickly learn to brush insults off! I suppose its all part of the learning experience.
It was actually talking to the late Ivan Marks that made me realise there is nothing to be gained from taking fishing too seriously and everything to be gained from being friendly and open. I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed my fishing as much as I have done since starting this column. With that in mind I hope you all have a very happy New Year! May your nets be full of fish – but hopefully not quite as full as mine!

I can see why people would misconstrue things I've written, especially if it turns into Chinese Whispers like so often happens in this game. It's one reason why I gave up writing End Peg. Hopefully this will lay a lot of ill feeling to rest but who knows. If not, crappity smack the lot of you as you aint worth the steam off my yellow stream!

Perhaps turning the news on might put things into perpestive.

Tonight there have been dozens killed in shootings in Mumbai (Hopefully non of Drawcraps relatives are injured).

1000's have lost their jobs with Woolworths a month before Christmas.

Thousands of homes are being repossesed through out the country daily...

And you two are making a big deal about chub in canals.
