Me, I've heard of Carnation Milk before but it tastes too nice to wing in the cut!!
We have messed around with custard pawder in the bread mix for loads of years; not too sure on it myself.

As for steaming or pressing bread for the hook, I don't bother, much prefer the pellet to expand naturally on the hook. Ain't bother what type of bread I use on the hook either l can't say I've ever noticed any difference as long as it's fresh. I've caught on Hovis before, even tried dying it red, you still catch on it.

I'm goona try bread paste before too long; years ago it was better than punch but has somehow been forgotten. Image Image Image
