FINAL ROUND SVWL AND WHAT A MATCH
well the final rearranged final round lived up to its name yet again, with the weather playing another major part .heavy rain on Thursday night meant the river soar was going to bank high for the 4 week running :Dnever have we seen the rise and fall so quickly and another key factor is frisby pits often used to store extra flood water then release as water starts to get back to normal levels
so with the venue changed to the canal another good decision to let all anglers know in good time so they can get the right bait in time well done again Brian
with the canal still heavily coloured the question was where to put the sections as some parts of the canal had seen B/J from the week before
after a few phone calls the sections had been decided barrow and bishops meadow were favourites so two sections went to barrow and three at bishops below the lock .
where else would think of catching fish canal mouths used to be full of fish so competitors all thought that's the place to be
with linc's county short and a couple of teams short of anglers [hope linc's county are ok ]the points were always going to lower,
most of the other sections Brian had spread them out giving everyone a chance of a few bites
after the draw Mark Godfrey had said Trentmen had drawn well all we needed to do was catch fish then he handed Pete scott the same area as he'd won off the last time the winter league was fished on the canal better to be lucky than good Pete ;)our draw seamed average but anything can happen as we all know
on my return to the team i wanted to impress and get my mojo back in the right gear ,peg 8 swing-bridge used to be a chub peg a few years ago no doubt there are some still on it so a line was primed
by the way this is at the start of the match as soon as it started the wind whistled through that bridge .owe yeh back to my bridge pegs
nice bridge
the pegs were well spaced out in our section
i was lucky to hear Brian shout the all in
normal rigs were set up [all sparkling and new ;)ready for the winter canal season] and after walking the last winter league remembering where they had caught off the peg.i remembered for a fact that no chub where caught off it ,my biggest question which line to make my main line and what to feed would it be a G/B and squatt or bread punch and with the wind getting up i needed to be sure
bread to the right and G/B to the left
it wasn't good news as half a hour had gone by and not a bite I'd fished a bigger disc of bread and had laid it on the bottom thinking i would have a better chance of a skimmer or bream than a roach just as our bank-walker was walking along the bank [roger Marlow with pen and paper did he really want my autograph ::) ::)]the float went under and the laggie was right out a nice 10oz skimmer came to the net roger had informed me that i was second with that fish [only second i hadn't seen anyone catch]brian had hooked and landed a bream on his first put in roger then checked the other side of the section was he walked back i was just landing a smaller one after that one it went really hard so i changed to the G/B and had 10 small fish but always kept topping up my lines
that line died so it was back to the bread nothing on caster or worm
a slight change in rigs i set up a 4x10 strung out rig thinking if i could just keep topping up with small roach i'd be ok ;)24s smallest punch i started to get the odd roach but very small. dropped a another golf ball sized ball of bread in and laid the rig on top the float went down and the laggy was out this time a hybrid shortly followed by another 13 fish in total on the fish counter ::) for 1kg 850grms just enough for second in the section and a great feeling at last
back at the pub i knew nothing of what the rest of the team had done apart from the sections roger had walked plus my phone had died .
i got myself a drink and the lads started coming back some highs and some lows
but then a string of section winners
pete scott had won the match 4kgs 300g what a series pete's had Pete Marlow 2nd in the match 3kg 370g
3rd in the match Rob jones 3kg 050g this has only been done once before and that was by Leicester a lot of years ago the points were getting less and less
we had heard off the canal bank that Quorn had done well as well and we were fishing against them for the overall knockout challenge trophy
the points were all in we had 24 points more than enough to win the day we thought nope Quorn had come back with the same points 24 had we done enough and beat them on weight for the trophy
we added up the weights QUORN 15KG 380G
LEICESTER SENSAS ........18KG280G
WE HAD DONE THE DOUBLE
what a team a year off from nationals and winter league has really made the difference and i feel we can compete at the highest level once again
Pete marow individual winner of the league
2nd Mark Godfrey
Pete scott and rob jones both in the top six individually
a very proud captain yesterday

lee you know you've been in a winter league when you fish the soar valley almost all the discipline's are needed
whether its pole ,stick, waggler, straight bomb or feeder at some stage you will need one of them plus the added fact you never know whether you will have to fish a flood river, low river or the canal until the last minute
plus the up and downs all add to it i hear it kicked off again on the canal back
when i walked the few matches[well most ::)] i did notice the standard of angling is very high in most teams.but i think we were the only team to of set the bomb rods up that certainly paid off in a couple of sections
i saw some great stick float anglers and again if some of the teams actually got there heads around the canal they would improve there chances of winning 100%

don't forget mark Russel rob Parker mark Eustace all new faces to the team mark and Pete have brought new ideas and self belief into the team and for saying its took a little longer to get them than i hoped they are here to stay
its a good mix now young and a few older ones as well bob greenbury who is a very disciplined all round angler on commercials or naturals seams to have found is mojo for natural venues again
