What's this contraption
And of course, where's this bridge

What an intriguing picture. The open bow [or stern]doors are mystifying to say the least. Could it be some kind of rubbish remover or dredger with a large rotating scoop to deposit the stuff into the boat? The bridge looks familiar but I can't place it at the mo.

Nice thought process MGB but nope it isnt a rubbish remover/dredger......
It certainly is a little bizzare...........but that was Vicorian ingenuity...... a possible clue to kick start that thought process again could be the couple of kids crossing the cut in the background

Looking closely I've probably given you a bum steer with that MGB - I thought the cut was planked off by the bridge
That's probably when this device would come into use........

Even more intriguing now TK, The contraption on the boat seems to have a cogged wheel on its right hand side which suggests that the device rotates. but for what purpose? Thought it might be a cable layer or a floating concrete mixer or dispenser but I think now it might be a container for the blokes on the bridge to have a piddle in!
Fitting and replacing the stanking planks maybe?
Stumped.

Is it some sort of early device to lower the planks into the slots by the bridges to drain the cut?
Failing that is it one of Willy's old bloodworm scrapers
