Dave Petch wins the title on the Soar
Mountsorrel natural water ace Dave Petch has won this years Individual National. The result came after a host of wins for the graphic designer over recent weeks, including setting a new Lougbrough Canal record, with a 61lb 11oz.

After drawing end peg 66, he began the match fishing pinkies over groundbait to land a kilo and a half of small roach fishing the pole at thirteen metres.

Once bites stopped Dave switched to fishing worm over the marginal weed, and caught perch at regular intervals including four of about three hundred grams each. His final weight was 5 kilos 580 grams, a comprehensive win for the amiable 40 year old.

Difficult conditions faced the competitors taking part. The river was very low and clear, with bright sunshine and a gusting breeze which added to the problem of tempting the fish to feed. Even with the extra weapon of bloodworm and joker, many anglers faced a hard day on the river bank.

Runner up was Tony Marshall (Van Den Eynde Quorn), who fished peg 32 on the reed bed. Like most anglers, Tony started on maggot over groundbait to catch a few small roach and skimmers, he then switched to his favourite method of hemp on the long pole, but fish were hard to tempt and the presence of pike stopped the fish from settling. A switch to fishing the feeder towards the far bank with worm hook bait turned things in his favour with two tench and a few small perch for a total weight of 3 kilo 600 grams.

Third place went to Ed Warren (Preston Innovations) who fished peg 28 and came just short of the runner up spot with 3 kilo 450 grams. Ed’s catch consisted of some small fish caught on maggot, plus a tench of about 2 kilos caught on worm.

a crying shame !everyone moaned when it was on a commercial with 50 on it .i wonder what they think now with only 33 on a natural  :-[ :-[
one thing i must say the Angling trust didn't advertise the competition enough only on there website loads of anglers had said they would of fished it if they had known  ::) ::) ::)

conditions were poor for this match as well a drop in temperature low clear river and sun-shine Image Image Image Imageall wrong for a days fishing

Perhaps the Angling Trust dont help themselves though Joff with running these matches in more ways than not just advertising it. How about the 10 quid per angler that comes off your 25 quid entry fee. How can this be justified along with the 25 quid you pay to join the angling trust. I would not have a problem paying this additional 10 quid fee if i knew it was going to help some of the international squads such as the disabled who could not rasie the money to enter this years world champs :( :(

This is only my opinion but surely this is a bit steep ?? and they wonder why fishing is going downhill. Take the practice for world club champs knockout it is a 6 man team event with 1 reserve to be named however you are only allocated 6 pegs to practice so how can your reserve fish his way into the team or even get to practice on the venue. This basically means any team naming a reserve angler he will need to take 2 days off work and pay expenses to possibly not even be able to fish the competition, bad choice of venue or bad selection of team size ??
I support the angling trust every year and respect the fact they are our governing body and do there best to help the sport in this country however i think some of there decisions are very amateurish in comparison to some of the events i have fished in abroad :'( :'(
Before anybody tries to knock what i have said this is only my opinion and that has been gained from experiences of my own.

dan i think the pebble has been thrown in the pond and the ripples are getting bigger .most of use can't afford to go fishing two days a week now and everyone has to watch the pennies. but like you said we pay a membership fee every year yet are penalised every time we fish one of there competitions  Imageif you knew before hand you'd have a choice whether to fish or not or just print a balance sheet before hand  Image

i do believe in the Angling trust and still think everyone should be a member .But for the first time i'm starting to wonder who you can trust look at the banks and the trouble they have caused and we are all members of these boys Image Image Image

dan, i think you will find that the tenner deducted is for peg fees and medals etc, i don't think it is being spirited away into the coffers as such, be nice to see a balance sheet once in a while though Image

THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT !the winner only gets to hold the trophy thats it its a natural venue not a commercial so the peg fee is around £2 whether its every peg as we had every other peg in the match 33 fished so they could of charged for 64 pegs even so nearly £10 taken out is way too much plus a medel 2 section medals 3 individual medals the match only had two sections that day plus they don't pay default

still its the anglers choice whether he fishes or not i just wonder if a balance sheet was shown whether anglers would fish
i think organisers should be paid no question about that!!!!! just show anglers how much Image
