EVESHAM first B/J matches
Saturday August 4th
Wychavon Championship Qualifier
Evesham Town & Ferry Waters
68 Fished.
1 Wayne Swinscoe (Maver Bait Tech) 11-2-0 (peg 27)
2 Leigh Gardner (Shakespeare Superteam) 9-7-0 (peg 10)
3 Simon Willsmore (Milo) 9-5-0 (peg 41)
4 Nigel Davies (Shakespeare Superteam) 7-10-0 (peg 11)
5 Steve Hemmingray (Drennan) 7-6-0 (peg 16)
=Matt Godfrey (Sensas) 7-6-0 (peg 79)
With a heavy deluge of rain preceding this qualifier, the River Avon was once again carrying extra pace and a tinge of colour. Being the first of the bloodworm qualifiers, many anglers based their approach on balled in groundbait, bloodworm and joker and good nets of small fish were taken throughout.
Winner on the day was river legend Wayne Swinscoe. Drawn on peg 27, Wayne fished bloodworm and joker at 13 metres to take a succession of chunky roach, perch and dace. While he was catching these smaller fish, Wayne catapulted halibut pellets down the middle of the river, and as the last half hour of the match approached, he slipped one on to the hook and cast a bomb out in to the flow. Ten minutes later, and his gamble paid off, as a 7lb barbel intercepted his hook pellet. He finished with an 11-2-0 total.
In second spot was another Avon legend, Leigh Gardner. Leigh started his match on bloodworm, but after a disappointing first hour decided that targeting bigger fish on chopped worm and caster would be a better bet. He caught a few chunky perch on a short line fed with worms, before casting out his trademark chopped worm feeder. Several quality eels followed, and Lee finished with a 9-7-0 mixed net.
Milo ace Simon Willsmore also had to ring the changes in order to keep fish coming. Simon caught an initial run of roach over balled in joker at 13 metres, before switching to a shorter line where he enjoyed a really good spell catching quality perch. When bites dried up here, Simon targeted bleak, and added a further 3lb of these to his net in the last couple of hours of the match, to finish with a 9-7-0 total.

Shakespeare Championship Qualifier
Evesham Town & Ferry Waters
72 Fished.
1 Scott Geens (Garbolino) 11-3-0 (peg 14)
2 Andy Murphy (Shimano Wales) 10-0-0 (peg 6)
3 Tony Bench (Shakespeare Superteam) 8-7-0 (peg 33)
= Sean Ashby (Sensas) 8-7-0 (peg 62)
5 Mark Brush (Daiwa Gordon League) 8-7-0 (peg 11)
Garbolino ace Scott Geens took the honours in Evesham’s second bloodworm qualifier of 2012, with a cracking 11-3-0 bag made up entirely of quality roach. Drawn on peg 14 on the Town Length, Scott put his faith in an 11 metre line, where he introduced a dozen balls of groundbait and joker. By varying his rigs and presentation, Scott kept quality roach coming for the duration of the match, and though sport was far from hectic, he enjoyed a large stamp of fish, having to use his landing net on almost every one!
Second place fell to the current Shakespeare Champion, Andrew ‘Spud’ Murphy. Spud also enjoyed a good initial run of fish on bloodworm, before bites subsided. He then picked up his waggler rod, and caught small chublets steadily for the rest of the match, to finish with a 10-0-0 total.
There was a tie for third place between England ace Sean Ashby, and Shakespeare Stalwart Tony Bench. Sean caught a net of small roach on bloodworm and joker from peg 62, while Tony caught a small barbel, and a couple of eels on a maggot feeder from peg 33.

EVESHAM first B/J matches
At the risk of starting a major debate.....Why oh why run bloodworm and joker matches on the river when weights have been relatively good in previous matches without it I could understand the thinking behind this in late autumn/winter, but its August, the river has had plenty of water through it since the season opened, and its been fishing well. Does this just play into the hands of the sponsored anglers who can afford to pile in bloodworm/joker for the upcoming festivals. Its coincidence reading this report and thinking of the "All our Yesterdays" post where Frank Barlow and Dave Harrel echoed similar sentiments :( :( :(

EVESHAM first B/J matches
SHOULD OF DONE BETTER
peg 8 is perhaps my favourite area with lots of choices on methods for most of the early numbers
Ive seen chub come off these pegs roach and eels as well
but i had one of those days fished b/j perhaps a little short at 12m still say that my stand was in the water, looking back the full 13 might of been better i just wanted to leave a option of eels or maggot feeder if i couldn't catch on B/J i measured 250ml into about 6 litres of G/B and soil this made up 8 good size balls i then cupped two rich balls with joker
after a couple of runs down i had a roach 5oz couple of perch and odd bites no one was catching i kept it simple and just ran it through after watching SAM i thought it looked right so i stuck with it thinking at any point the roach would come all around anglers were fishing feeders and flat floats had i read the day wrong knowing it had fished hard the day before i phoned sam "catching mate"he replied "yep" it must be me then i carried on just taking odd fish
Trev tomlin came down and sat with me,it was a frustrating time as the bites were hard to come by
so i asked if he'd walk the section as i knew tony mashell had drawn peg two the peg I'd sat behind SAM the week before
before long Trev was back"looks like Tony's catching a few on hemp but is getting piked out "
hemp, hemp, hemp i just wonder if its a deadly bait so i went up the bank and sorted a rig out i topped up the B/J line and went 13m with the hemp line i feed it for half a hour before having a go as the b/j line had become painful
right i thought last couple of hours and still time to put a weight together after 10 minutes of changing around i netted a roach and missed a couple of bites things looked to be going right a nice 10oz roach.even trev stayed a little longer
at this point it was looking good not fast but the fish were quality odd eels were coming out but no one around me had fed any hemp, another roach netted only for this one to jump to freedom and bounced on the rime of my keepnet afew more roach later i hooked a real good fish [roach but they don't half fight in the Avon] took my time ::) only for mr pike to have a free meal this happened three times and by this time the bites had slowed right up trev had gone :-/and the day seamed to get worse as young eric yeoman had put together a nest of eels and above spud had three late on 4lb 9oz but i really enjoyed the day 80 anglers how good is that and lots of pegs that can win if you do the right thing on the right day
